oil on canvas / This Painting was a commissioned piece for this passage of scripture. / Luke 4:18-19 / “The spirit of the lord is upon me to preach good news to the poor, sight to the blind, release for the captives and to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.” / A little explanation: / You will find 12 sections to represent one year – ‘the year of the Lord’s favour’. / Then I set to work on what would be in each of the 12 parts? / One day I was writing out a shopping list and I started to write what I’d need in order to really live this passage… or what I had already perhaps… / Spirit, Light, Voice, Faith, Uncertainty, Hope, Hands, Water, Oil, Feet, Strength, Boldness… / This is a great sending forth… an annointing… a comissioning… / I realised that I had all that it takes and that it would take all that I have in order to live according to this bold sending out…. / Starting from the top left hand corner you will find water… I think, living in Australia, i am so very much aware of how precious water is for life and how water is definitely good news for the poor. Next you will find Hope, the small window of hope at the top signifies that there is always hope, even in the darkest places. / In the top right hand corner you will find Hands, these are actually a painting of a man’s hands that had just saved a life. We can use our hands for so much good in the world and from small things done by hand, incredble things can be achieved. I also think these hands relate so well to the Homeless man’s hands in the bottom left hand corner and therefore connect the painting. / The green is for boldness – if you look closely at the original artwork you can see the word Boldness written in there, I find green such a difficult colour to work with and it takes extreme boldness for me to paint with green… a step out of a comfort zone! / The bubble looking circle is for Strength… sometimes we take strength for granted. What is strength is all contexts, physical, emotional, spiritual etc…? Like a bubble… perhaps it is my interpretation that strength is a gift and it can exist simultaneously as both tangible and intangible in our personal awareness. Voice is represented with words – written and lifted up… we need to have voices for the poor, the oppressed, the captives, the refugees, the neglected, the abused, the blind, the sick, the forgotten… / The child with questioning eyes represents Faith, she has seen the world for what it really is and she looks to us. Then we have oil, oil for annointing – for mission… but I chose to place a woman in this section who represents the middle east, here is a woman who has seen so much devastation in the world because of oil and money and power and war. / Light is represented by a shadow of us, and just how much darkness we walk in, we need to shine light into that darkness. The Homeless man represents Uncertainty – seems a bit like the odd word out in the list – but I like it… its says so much about what it means to be human in all our brokenness – but we are all connected! It’s about not having all the answers but being able to take notice and to see reality in front of us… may the oppressed go free because we choose to step out and take risks! I think Spirit is pretty self explanitory – but its about us all being in this together for the good of all humankind… this is a crowd that can achieve amazing things together!!! / The last section of the painting represents Feet… Feet of readiness to take us where we need to be… it may be just one step at a time… but we have to start walking and taking action. The Spirit is upon us as you can see linking through every section of the painting. I hope that this has helped you understand the work a little more. Thank you for taking time to read this!

Holy Mantras on Mani stones near to the Vajra Guru or Padmasambhava’s (Guru Rinpoche) sacred cave in Tso Pema (Rewalsar), India / Mani stones are stone plates, rocks or pebbles inscribed, usually, with mantra, as a form of prayer in Tibetan Buddhism. Mani stones are intentionally placed along the roadsides and rivers or placed together to form mounds or cairns as an offering to spirits of place… The mantra OM MANI PADME HUNG / -OM represents the body of all Buddhas; / -MANI means ‘jewel’; / -PADME, means “lotus”; / -HUNG represents the mind of all Buddhas; MANI refers to the jewel that Chenrezig holds in his two central hands and PADME to the lotus he holds in his second left hand. Saying MANI PADME names Chenrezig through his attributes: “the one who holds the jewel and the lotus.” “Chenrezig” or “Jewel Lotus” are two names for the same deity. / When we recite this mantra we are in fact continually repeating the name of Chenrezig. In itself this exercise may look strange. ...this mantra is invested by the grace and power of the mind of Chenrezig who himself gathers the grace and compassion of all the Buddhas and bodhisattvas. ... the mantra is endowed with the capacity to purify our mind from the veils that obscure it. The mantra opens the mind to love and compassion and leads it toward awakening. / http://www.amitabhahospice.org.nz/public/spiritual_support/compassion.php

This is as close as I have come to date to depict a nightmare of Christ’s descent to Hell. Believe or don’t believe, but Im showing you a small glimpse of my dream. Thanks for viewing. Sincerely Vonne Harrowing of Hell / From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Roman Catholic / There is an ancient homily on the subject, of unknown authorship, usually entitled The Lord’s Descent into Hell that is the second reading at Matins on Holy Saturday in the Roman Catholic Church. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: “By the expression ‘He descended into Hell’, the Apostles’ Creed confesses that Jesus did really die and through his death for us conquered death and the devil ‘who has the power of death’ (Hebrews 2:14). In his human soul united to his divine person, the dead Christ went down to the realm of the dead. He opened Heaven’s gates for the just who had gone before him.”[6] As the Catechism says, the word “Hell”—from the Norse, Hel; in Latin, infernus, infernum, inferi; in Greek, ᾍδης (Hades); in Hebrew, שאול (Sheol)—is used in Scripture and the Apostles’ Creed to refer to the abode of all the dead, whether righteous or evil, unless or until they are admitted to Heaven (CCC 633). This abode of the dead is the “Hell” into which the Creed says Christ descended. His death freed from exclusion from Heaven the just who had gone before him: “It is precisely these holy souls who awaited their Savior in Abraham’s bosom whom Christ the Lord delivered when he descended into Hell”, the Catechism states (CCC 633), echoing the words of the Roman Catechism, 1,6,3. His death was of no avail to the damned. Conceptualization of the abode of the dead as a place, though possible and customary, is not obligatory (Church documents, such as catechisms, speak of a “state or place”). Some maintain that Christ did not go to the place of the damned, which is what is generally understood today by the word “Hell”. For instance, Thomas Aquinas taught that Christ did not descend into the “Hell of the lost” in his essence, but only by the effect of his death, through which “he put them to shame for their unbelief and wickedness: but to them who were detained in Purgatory he gave hope of attaining to glory: while upon the holy Fathers detained in Hell solely on account of original sin, he shed the light of glory everlasting.”[7] While some maintain that Christ merely descended into the “limbo of the fathers”, others, notably theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar (inspired by the visions of Adrienne von Speyr), maintain that it was more than this and that the descent involved suffering by Jesus.[8] Since both John Paul II and Benedict XVI have lauded the theology of Balthasar, and because some do not see a precise doctrinal position of the Church on this point, some maintain that this is a matter on which differences and theological speculation is permissible without transgressing the limits of orthodoxy.[9] View Large Here
