Spirit Walks Challenge

Ten groups have come together in a challenge to welcome All Hallow’s Eve/Samhain/Halloween, the beginning of winter, for the southern hemisphere.

The participating groups are Practising the Dark Arts; Blood Red – All things vampiric; Monsters Ink; THE PHANTASMAGORICAL; Short stories – Spherical Scriptings; 1 In The Beginning – Ancient Practices; Fantasy Art; The Art of 3D; Myths, Legends, and Fairy Tales and Flash Fiction.

Background and Inspiration
All Hallow’s Eve is the day when the worlds merge, that of Spirit and flesh, where the veils are at their thinnest, and the Ancestors can freely roam between the two membranes of time and existence. We can communicate more clearly with them, communing together in dreams and shadows.
Samhain corresponds to the Wisdom Cycle of life, the Winter Deities, and thus ensures that our communing with the Ancestors is clear and well grounded.
Samhain is when the Wild Hunt emerges from Faerie to roam the winter countryside. Mortals getting in the path of the Hunt could be kidnapped and brought to the land of the dead.

How to be a part of it
Create a written work that captures the essence of an aspect of the above information.
Add your work to the group, and paste a link to it in this forum topic, so we hosts knows it’s an entry!
The challenge is open to the whole world, not just people in the southern hemisphere :)

How it will work
Enter your work to the challenge as above.
Your hosts will judge a winning story to represent the group.
All of the group winners will then be open to a public vote to pick the overall winner across all ten groups!

Entries close midnight (your time) April 28th.
Group winners will be announced April 30th, and public voting will run for a week (voting details will be provided at that time) to decide the overall winning image and written work (and winning group!)

Prize. There is AUS$20 for the overall writing winner.

Written works up to 1000 words.

This challenge is in the spirit of fun and group interaction, and is not about determining if one group is better than another :)

Yes! Last night I spent time gathered around a table with other bubblers, trying to explain about the upcoming Samhain, and all that it symbolises. Few people understand about the reversal of cycles down here, and just how we can embrace Hallowe’en in April, so I usually have my work cut out for me. Now I can send them here! I’ll see what I can come up with….

Think this calls for Mulled Wine to get us in the spirit of the thing:

Ingredients (serves 8)
1×750ml btl dry red wine
225g (1 cup) white sugar
125ml (1/2 cup) brandy
125ml (1/2 cup) water
2 oranges, thinly sliced
1 lemon, thinly sliced
2×7cm cinnamon sticks, lightly crushed
6 whole cloves
Pinch of grated nutmeg
Lemon peel, to decorate
Method
Place the wine, sugar, brandy, water, orange, lemon, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg in a large saucepan over low heat. Simmer, stirring occasionally, for 5-10 minutes or until sugar dissolves and mixture is aromatic. Remove from heat.
Strain mulled wine into a large jug. Pour among serving glasses. Decorate with lemon peel and serve immediately.

Creativity is encouraged … juniper berries are tasty

Oh my lord….how deliciously decadent!! The Wesley Anne, where we have the monthly Melbourne writers’ meetings, is bringing back their mulled wine on Tuesday, and I can barely sit still at the prospect. I’m sure it had nothing to do with all my pouting and pleading….

A perfect Hallowe’en tipple, Empress!

Ah haa! I can see I’ll be shopping for mulled wine ingredients tomorrow!

Bell, hope you went well explaining things to those other bubblers, LOL! It’s good to be thinking about Hallowe’en and have the season feel right! Not to say we can’t do something for October as well!

Question: do we post it up here ?_?**

I’m one of the wide-eyed bubblers that Bell was introducing to the Southern Samhain and it did get me smiling in a big way. Two Halloweens? That’s better than two Christmases in my book.
