  • In the famous legend, Lady Godiva so sympathizes with her subjects’ suffering under her husband’s oppressive taxes that she pleads with him to lift the tariffs and give the people some relief. Sick of her persistence and wanting to call her bluff, Leofric tells her he will lift the tax if she rides naked through the city and to his surprise, Godiva does, after instructing the townspeople to shutter their windows and stay inside. • Mrs. Lavinski had some rather Libertarian views on the subject of property tax (especially for a card-carrying Wobblie) but that contradiction doesn’t make her attempts to avoid them any less entertaining. A Hungarian immigrant of amazing ingenuity, Zora put her hard work in the factories of Chicago to good use when it came to crafting a solution to avoiding the “damn Revenuers” who drove her batty. Her steam-powered moving tenement more than returned the favor – it was rumored that no fewer than 10 tax assessors found it necessary to take “medical leaves of absence” after being driven mad by their attempts to track down Zora’s property and assess it. • Maybe you’ve read the “His Dark Materials” trilogy by Phillip Pullman, or just “The Golden Compass” – truly steampunk for the younger set! Here is my illustration of the terrifying and beautiful Mrs. Coulter, accompanied by her golden monkey daemon, with a zeppelin visible outside the window behind her. Is that a fox stole or some unfortunate’s daemon she is holding in her lap? This 2 ½” x 3 ½” x ½” original collage is executed on a small painted wood-stretched canvas with vintage images, art paper, dresden corners, and small brass accents. Mrs. Coulter wears a sparkling crystal earring and delicate black satin ribbon edges the finished sides of the canvas. Does not require a frame to hang. Signed & dated on back. This original artwork is copyright Ramona Szczerba 2008. Image cannot be reproduced without my express written permission. Thanks!

  • 9×12 pastel on Tiziano paper I can’t seem to get “Tangerine” by Led Zeppelin out of my head right now. “The Living reflection of a dream”. What kind of woman inspired those words? Some songs just get lodged in your head and stay there for days and days. Tangerine video link

  • Stairs located at Morraine Lake in Banff National Park Alberta Canada. Stairway To Heaven- Led Zeppelin /

  • 9×12 watercolor and colored pencil on watercolor paper This is another piece inspired by a Led Zeppelin song, Going to California. Particularly the lines “someone told me there’s a girl out there with love in her eyes and flowers in her hair”. And then there is that purely esoteric line “Children of the sun begin to awake.” / The ancient Incans called themselves The Children of the Sun. They had legends of a white bearded man that came from ancient Lemuria and brought to them the great spiritual knowledge of Lemuria. Many believe that it is the souls of Lemuria that are awaking now(The Children of the Sun) and are bringing us into the New Age of Peace and Enlightenment. I wonder if Plant knew all this when he wrote those lyrics.
