Shipwreck Zante Greece / Said to have happened in early 1950s. Different verions of events reported but the most consistant is that the ship was being chased by customs when it ran aground on the beach. / The Smugglers Cove (Shipwreck) / The ship which lies on this beautiful beach is called “Panagiotis”. In 1982, “Panagiotis” was smuggling a large quantity of cigarettes when it was observed by a customs patrol. It managed to outrun the patrol boat but was eventually cornered on the North West coast of Zante in dreadful storm conditions. Its captain determined that the customs should not gain his prize, realized all was lost and decided to scuttle the ship. “Panagiotis” was carried onto the rocks in the fierce storm and finally, it was washed ashore. / Since that day, the Shipwreck Beaches fame grew increasingly and today, thousands of tourists from all around the world visit the Smugglers Cove to admire this unusual spectacle.
