Joshua Tree silhouette in the Mojave Desert, with a backdrop of Mountain High Ski resort taken on the way home from Las Vegas. / Joshua Trees (Yucca Brevifloria) can reach 40 feet in height and thrive in the rugged terrain of the desert at elevations of 2000-6000 ft. They have since been reclassified as a member of the Lily ( Liliaceae) family. / The Mojave Desert is the only place in the world where Joshua Trees grow. Nikon D40x

White Sands National Memorial in New Mexico is one of our nation’s treasures. The sand is truly white and stretches for miles. The winds which blow over it sculpt and move the layers of sand into wonderful abstract designs. When the early morning light or the waning light of the evening shine at a low slant across the dunes, the shadows form beautiful designs. This image was taken at sunset with a soapstone yucca growing valiantly in the sand.
rain drops on my yucca plants. Attempted this one before a long time ago, didn’t work out so well. I think I might have gotten it this time!

Flowers outside Canyonlands National Park, Utah. The spiky ones are yucca, and I’m not sure about the “soft” ones. The red rock is Jasper.
When I first saw this flower a year ago, I had no idea what it was – but I was fascinated by the soft pink of the bashful blossoms and the huge stems encompassing a high, graceful curve that was almost a metre long. The real contrast was the foliage, with dark green and yellow striped leaves covered in wispy, gossamer-thin tendrils. I shot about six frames, but this one, depicting the bashful petals of the soon-to-bloom flower, actually shows the extent of the curve. After I posted this shot on my blog, I was told it was a Variegated Yucca (Yucca filamentosa), known for its distinctive candelabra-style flowers. To achieve the depth of field, I shot it from about a metre above the curve, looking down at the leaves with their contrasting colour. I focused on the second bud and shot it at F5.6 and 1/125th. I used an 18-125mm lens and this was shot at 125mm. /
These Yucca blooms after a rain seem to be just the place for ants to feed and water. It is a long way (over three feet) to the ground for them to travel but they are here all the time.
