Yosemite National Park Distance: 2.5 miles (4 km) round trip to May Lake; 6 miles (9.6 km) if you climb Mt. Hoffman as well Elevation at trailhead: 8,800 feet (2,640 meters) / May Lake Elevation: 9,270 feet (2,825 meters) / Mt. Hoffman Elevation: 10,845 feet (3,305 meters) / Elevation Gain: 500 feet (150 meters) to May Lake; 2,000 feet (600 meters) to Mt. Hoffman Hiking Time: 1.5 – 4 hours May Lake reflection / Why hike to May Lake? To see the only lake that, we can say with some certainty, got a geologist some action. George Hoffman, a member of the 1863-67 Whitney Geological Survey, named the lake after Lucy Mayotta Browne. In what was surely a related matter, Browne married Hoffman in 1870. And is it just a coincidence that May Lake nestles in the lap of 10,845-foot Mt. Hoffman? Not likely. Mr. Hoffman appears to have been a man with a direct and pointed imagination. Best Time to Visit: Whenever the Tioga Pass Road is open – typically June through October; see our Road Conditions page for the road’s historical opening and closing dates Scenery Factor: Like so many of Yosemite’s high lakes, May Lake rests at the base of striking granite cliffs (Mt. Hoffman, in this case), giving it a memorably picturesque backdrop. Unlike other lakes, though, May Lake’s low side gives way not to forest, but to a dropoff that looks over the Tioga Road area all the way to Clouds Rest and Tenaya Lake, a bonus that makes this one of Yosemite’s most scenic lake hikes. Getting There: From Yosemite Valley, take highway 120 ten miles (16.8 km) to the Crane Flat turnoff onto Tioga Road, then take Tioga Road 28 miles (44.8 km) east to the May Lake turnoff. From Yosemite’s east entrance at Tioga Pass, take the Tioga Road west 20 miles (32 km) to the turnoff. From the turnoff, it’s 1.8 miles (2.9 km) to the trailhead parking lot.
Yosemite’s sunsets “I only went out for a walk and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found, was really going in.” / John Muir “Take a course in good water and air; and in the eternal youth of Nature you may renew your own. Go quietly, alone; no harm will befall you.” / John Muir
After The High Country Oasis, and the trail from Red Peak pass; this was our destination Red Lake. It’s really called Red Devil Lake, but I don’t think something so beautiful should be titled as such. So I just call it “Red Lake” This was our destination after 9 + hours of hiking. / Yosemite /

The road to curry village. The East Valley: After a second crossover road to the north, the Southside Drive reaches two riverside picnic areas at Cathedral Beach and Sentinel Beach, then passes through a meadow and enters the east end of the valley. The main section of the road ends at Curry Village, which has lodging, several shops, restaurants, cycle rentals and other services. /

Upper Yosemite Fall as seen from across one of the meadows in early spring. Yosemite National Park, California, is perhaps the world’s best known example of a glacier-carved canyon. Yosemite’s giant waterfalls, towering cliffs, rounded domes, and massive monoliths make it a natural marvel and one of the most visited places on Earth. Yosemite National Park is located in California’s Eastern Sierras. It is comprised of Yosemite Valley, Tuolumne Meadows, Glacier Point, and other high country wilderness areas. One of the main attractions of Yosemite are its majestic waterfalls. The main falls are Yosemite, Bridalveil, Vernal, Nevada, and Illilouette. The best time to visit the falls is in May since the water is gushing. Bridalveil usually has a neat rainbow in the afternoon.

“As long as I live, I’ll hear waterfalls and birds and winds sing. I’ll interpret the rocks, learn the language of flood, storm, and the avalanche. I’ll acquaint myself with the glaciers and wild gardens, and get as near the heart of the world as I can.” — from The Journals of John Muir

I went to Yosemite over “Christmas 2008” it had snowed 3 feet the day before we got there. It truly was the most beautiful place I had ever seen, my pictures just can’t show the true beauty we saw.

The day before Easter Sunday in Yosemite a cold front blew through. We got up and ate at the exclusive Ahwahnee Hotel and then meandered to the falls and saw this beautiful site.
My kind of HDR… I used no program, just what I liked from 3 different exposures and put them together over the darkest image. First of many I tried in Yosemite.
