I noticed yesterday that this did not register on the t-shirts recent tab so I decided to upload it again to see if it did this time… The very talented and lovely Rae and I teamed up for the latest and greatest challenge over at T-shirt Revolution After much discussion, we decided to base our designs on Yin and Yang. Our limitations therefore were within the rules of the Chinese belief of which you can read more about here. Our other self appointed guideline was Yin had to be a predominantly white design on a black t-shirt and Yang had to be a predominantly black design on a white t-shirt. Whilst looking through the ruling system, I realised (in my opinion) how far some of the qualities were from nature. Yin = Female / Qualities are: Night / Death / Moon / Decay / Cold / Water / Passive Yang = Male / Qualities are: Day / Life / Sun / Birth / Hot / Fire / Aggressive Especially with the whole life and death connection, as women are life givers and men (generally) take life. So with this in mind, I added my own interpretation to the whole belief system but staying within the guidelines. This was a logo draft I designed for a woman circle or network, / a female group, who came together once a week for meditations, discussions, support etc. I thought this might make a perfect T-shirt design, especially as the image has various double meanings – fertility, the female cycle, the cycle of birth and death, the earth goddess, female love, balance, yin & yang… The original is hand-drawn with black fineliner on Cartridge paper. I took the drawing into Illustrator and turned it into vector art, fine-tuned the curves, cleaned up the artwork etc. My girlfriend Breda, this is dedicated to you! Breda is doing fantastic work for females in N.T. Australia. • Featured in All Things Black August 2009 Great news – this design was selected to be part of the Womanly Festival, the Manly Arts Festival organised by the Creative Mums in Sydney in September 2009. Okay, a little personal information to help make sense of this image, quite simply, Cyn has no yin. I’m “yin deficient” – so Olga has told me. (acupuncturist/Chinese medicine earth mama) Try as I might, I cannot muster any up for myself. So, I run around quite hot. / If any of the wonderful wise women (or men!) out there have any tips, I’d gladly welcome. To make “Empty Fire”, I merged two of my other works together.
