A close-up of a wasp in my backyard.
I was working in the backyard yesterday, and these little guys kept buzzing me. When I hurt my shoulder last year I stopped doing things in the backyard, including pest control. There were 8 nest under the eaves of our house. They were in various stages of development. In fact 2 were about the size of a softball. Then I found four about the size of a golf ball. Sorry if you’re an insect lover but I killed most of them with wasp and hornet spray. We are going to have a garden this year for the first time in our lives and don’t want to get stung by one of these nasty little guys.
Taken 16th May. I held the wasp under a glass to have his/her picci taken, he/she was then released. : ) My images do not belong in the public domain. Those who are members of the Former DPF Group will be saddened to hear that our friend YellowJacket (Paul) passed away early morning 9th October USA time. His wife Merlyne has requsted that I pass this news on to his ‘online family’. While we know he is now free of pain and with his Maker, as humans we will miss him and his wonderful sense of humour, his courage, and his encouragement. He touched so many lives. I admire him so much for rising above his disabilities and looking for ways to still make a difference. Till recently he was out photographing animals in the local shelter in order to maximise their opportunity of finding a home. I have expressed our love and support to his wife Merlyne, and said I would pass on any comments from his ‘online family’ in about a week’s time. So please feel free to add any expressions of sympathy and support to this Journal which you would like passed on to Paul’s family. I know Merlyne would also appreciate your prayers – she speaks of her unpreparedness to be alone. We celebrate Paul’s photography and life in the Former DPF Group overview with Features of his work, and Paul as our Featured Artist.

Wasp (Yellow Jacket) Stands ready at the entrance to this nest.
This Yellowjacket has injured her wings and can no longer fly. She does not understand that she can’t fly; she keeps trying, but just makes pitiful little hops. She spends all day climbing up to the top of my Black-eyed Susans, falling off, then climbing back up again. Etobicoke, Ontario / 9/13/09

Caught him on the mums, he was very docile. I think the cold was getting to him. Eastlake, Ohio, USA
Taken in my back yard in Winlock, Washington in late August. The yellow jackets were all over my bronze fennel flowers. By August, they are getting pretty aggressive and pretty mean here. Grabbed a couple shots and ran! Canon Rebel XTi Canon 70-300mm lens
This is a pencil sketch prepared during the process of creating “Yellowjacket”, one of the largest watercolors I’ve painted (and sadly waiting for a trip to the large-format scanner). Among the most reviled of insects, yellowjacket wasps are highly territorial and the bane of picnickers. Like all insects, however, I find them fascinating.
