  • Verrazano-Narrows Bridge When it opened in 1964, the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge was the world’s longest suspension span. The ends of the bridge are at historic Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn and Fort Wadsworth in Staten Island, both of which guarded New York Harbor at the Narrows for over a century. The bridge was named after Giovanni da Verrazano, who, in 1524, was the first European explorer to sail into New York Harbor. Its monumental 693 foot high towers are 1 5/8 inches farther apart at their tops than at their bases because the 4,260 foot distance between them made it necessary to compensate for the earth’s curvature. Each tower weighs 27,000 tons and is held together with three million rivets and one million bolts. Seasonal contractions and expansions of the steel cables cause the double-decked roadway to be 12 feet lower in the summer than in the winter. High Tide Clearance is 228 feet. Taken from the passenger seat with a Nikon D70s 52mmFL 1/320sec F/9 / /

  • Unfortunately the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge shows signs of Disrepair.

  • The Sun sets as we travel through Brooklyn, New York on The Belt Parkway on a late December afternoon. I believe a flock of birds were traveling in the opposite direction nearby at the same time, causing the dark lines in the sky. Taken from Car with Nikon D70s 70mm Fl F4.5 1/20 sec.

  • Taxis in New York have to be one on the most ubiquitous sights. Every street always has a handful of the yellow conveyances waiting at every intersection ready to leap away on the journey to the next red light a few yards down the road.

  • There is a big tub under the bird feeder, seeds fall in, some are eaten, but some germinate. It’s exciting watching the tiny shoots and trying to guess what is growing. One year I grew brassicas which attracted white butterflies to lay eggs, wonderful photo opportunities. Last year I grew corn. This year weird green spikey things, maybeTriffids, and 2 lovely Sunflowers, popular now with insects, later the birds will feed on the seed heads in my York garden. 090909 / Sony H9 crop pf / 090909 This sky where we live / Is no place to lose your wings. / So love, love, love. / Hafiz حافظ Human beings are members of a whole, / In creation of one essence and soul. / If one member is afflicted with pain, / Other members uneasy will remain. / If you have no sympathy for human pain, / The name of human you cannot retain. / Saadi “Of one Essence is the human race, / thus has Creation put the base; / One Limb impacted is sufficient / For all Others to feel the Mace ” / —Saadi (1184–1283) “There is only one sacred manuscript, the sacred manuscript of Nature, which alone can enlighten the reader.” Hazrat Inayat Khan “I cannot think that we are useless or God would not have created us. • The Hole of Horcum is a section of the valley of the Levisham Beck in the North York Moors of northern England, upstream of Levisham and Lockton. The Hole of Horcum is a vast, 400ft deep natural hollow measuring ¾ of a mile across. It has been naturally eroded over thousands of years by the action of springs, though a more romantic legend tells us that it was created when a giant named Wade, who was in fact a Saxon chief, grabbed a ‘handful’ of earth to throw at his wife, Bell – the soil missed its target and landed to form the 800ft high hill of Blakey Topping which lies about a mile to the east. Nikon D60 / HDR in photomatix / one shot, handheld / pp in PS CS3 / Lens: Nikkor 18-200m / 1/125 f/9.0 ISO200
