This bird is the Hispaniola Wood pecker and is a native bird of the Dominican Republic Caribbean Island , Hispaniola is the name that Christopher Columbus originally gave to this Island when he discovered it. I spotted this woodpecker when I was at one of the swimming pool of the hotel Grand Paradise Samana, he was at the end up at 50 feet in the air of this coconut tree, my camera being a Photosmart HP R927 with a 3.5 optical zoom and a 8.2 megapixel capability , was not to fantastic for capturing this beautiful bird so here goes the description, about 20 centimeters long, olive green belly, yellow and black stripped back, light and dark bluish gray face, big and long bright head red crown , orange eyes, dark feet. I dis get to see him a little closer on my room balcony and got a better and clearer shot…I think… / you can see it in my portfolio just beside this one… They make their nest in the coconut trees, they poke a small hole on one of the upper side of this one , in this photo beside the trunk on the upper left part of the photo , if you look closely you can see a headless mother giving insects to the babies poking her head in the hole…
