Tampa Union Station (TUS) is an historic depot in Tampa, Florida, United States. It is located at 601 North Nebraska Avenue(SR 45). Opened on May 15, 1912, by the Tampa Union Station Company, its original purpose was to combine passenger operations for the Atlantic Coast Line, the Seaboard Air Line and the Tampa Northern Railroad at a single site. On June 5, 1974, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. After its condition deteriorated substantially, Tampa Union Station was closed in 1984; Amtrak passengers used a temporary prefabricated station building located adjacent to the station platforms after the building was closed. Tampa Union Station was acquired in 1991 by the non-profit Tampa Union Station Preservation & Redevelopment Corporation (TUSP&R) via a mortgage held by CSX, the freight railroad company which was the corporate descendant of its original railroad owners. TUSP&R raised over 4 million USD for the building’s restoration through grants and loans from sources including the Florida Department of Transportation (ISTEA funds), the City of Tampa (grant funds) and the National Trust for Historic Preservation (no interest loan). At the completion of the restoration in 1998, the station reopened to Amtrak passengers and the public. CSX donated the station to the City of Tampa that same year. Currently, it operates as an Amtrak station for the Silver Star line. It also provides Amtrak Thruway Motorcoach services to Orlando, Lakeland, Pinellas Park-St. Petersburg, Bradenton, Sarasota, Port Charlotte and Fort Myers. This building is located across the street from the Ybor City Train Station. I hope to add some info on the history of this structure, if I can ever find any. ((UPDATE)) Found some history. 1912. Masonry Vernacular. Two stories. The building is six-sided, a ground plan that conforms to the irregularly shaped lots on which it was constructed. The hotel was constructed to serve as a satellite lodging and commercial venue for the nearby Union Station, which was erected to facilitate Tampa’s increasing rail traffic during the early twentieth century. The hotel building is all that remains of a continuous series of twelve two-story brick storefronts that were constructed Private 7 Exposures / Nikon D200 / Tokina 12-24mm F4 AS Lens / Circular Polarizer / Processed in Photomatix / Sharpened in CS3 / Filtered for noise reduction in Noiseware. The HDR photo below is in my portfolio. I originally thought it was some type of warehouse that supported the train station across the street. After further research though, I’m not so sure that’s the case. After a lot of research by myself and a friend of mine we were able to find this wikipedia reference (we looked everywhere to find this, I was shocked at just how much research it took just to get this but once we found this, we were able to get some more good info.). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Union_Depot_Hotel Take a look at the photo under the gallery tab on the wikipedia page above. “Union Hotel and Cafe” I found this info out at another site 1912. Along with this photo / So from everything I’ve collected here, it sure like it’s the Union Hotel and Cafe, right? Not according to the city, they say that the Hotel and Cafe are down the street from here. Yet, this is a National Registered Landmark. So what now? Oh and to make things a little more interesting, the land if for sale.
If you are ever in the Ybor City area of Tampa, I highly suggest t his restaurant. The food is incredible , make sure you’re hungry though, the portions are very hearty.
Nick Chillura Nuccio was born in Ybor City in 1901. He was the son of Vincenzo and Rosalia Nuccio, Sicilian immigrants who came to Ybor City in the late nineteenth century. Nuccio began his political career in 1928, he served eight years on the City Council and then 20 years as a county commissioner. In 1956, he became the first Latin to be elected mayor of Tampa. He served two terms as Mayor of the City of Tampa, 1956 to 1959 and 1963 to 1967. He was an extremely popular politician, known for his warm handshake and lively conversation. Nuccio especially loved children, and always kept small toys in his pockets to give to youngsters. Nick Nuccio died in 1989. An old cigar factory in Ybor City in Tampa, Florida.
This light post stands alone in Ybor City and against the brick red building, gives it a very classic, vintage feel.
One of my favorites of this messy girl. We shot over 100 pics within an hour and came out with a great selection for her portfolio. This photoshoot was a lot of fun and in Ybor City of all places!
