Sometimes you see something unexpected that takes your breath away. Two incidents recently have reminded me that even on an ordinary day this world can be surprising and that I haven’t seen everything yet. Driving home from Melburne yesterday just as the sun was beginning to set , I was surprised to see a shimmering halo of rainbow colours behind a particular patch of storm cloud. I have never seen an effect like this before in the sky and am certainly intrigued. Perhaps there was rain in the area where the sunlight was sinking behind this cloud. I guess I may never have an opportunity to see this again though I will keep looking. And of course I didn’t have my camera with me. Another moment of unexpected beauty happened as I walked alongside the Yarra on weekend day trip into Melbourne and was amazed to see the water turn into a shimmering, dancing river of gold. At first I thought someone had cast handfuls of tinsel or metallic confetti into the water. Then I realised that I happened to be standing at just the right point to witness the river reflecting the golden colours of the Eureka Tower. Again, I didn’t have my camera with me, but I hope to see this again one day even if I have to camp by the Yarra all day until the sunlight hits the water at that perfect angle once more. Everytime I think of these moments of unexpected beauty I feel a sense of wonder, that at 32 years of age this world still has secrets to reveal to me.

Recently got back from an overnight stay up at my holiday house at Marysville in the Yarra Ranges. Don’t think I had been up there for around a year and it made me realise how much i love the place. Such a photogenic location if you know where to look! Got some nice snaps of the Taggerty River and surrounding waterfalls and have put a couple of works up. I’m certain that it’s gonna be a lot less than a year before i head up there again! I’m thinking in a couple of weeks the town will be looking really autumny :)

I’m preparing for a group exhibition in August, as part of the newly funded Yarra Valley Open Studios project. In March/April 09 We are opening 30 working studios to the public for a weekend, and this 3 week exhibition is part of the prelude to that event. The theme for this August exhibition is “Artist in Context”, and shows the development of art, from idea to finished works. I’ll be showing a visual diary with each work, to explain (by exclusion of the rubbish) how I arrived at the final piece. Also exhibiting will be Bec Smith, talented local photog, two fine jewellers, Tim Peel and Cathy Van den Essen, Textile artist Nicola Stairmand, and ceramist Alistair Whyte. The exhibition opens at the Three Stories gallery in Healesville, on August 22. Anyone interested in the project, feel free to leave a message here or email me at mike (at) thepub.com

Hi Everyone, I photographed the Melbourne Moomba parade, streets and along the Yarra River where the carnival is held with my dad today. Each float in the Moomba Parade represents the cultural diversity of the Melbourne community, plenty of colour, character and fun. Click here to go to my blog and see some shots and a Slide Show with a selection of photos of the parade and candids of people in the streets and river, hope you enjoy.

Last Thursday (4/6/09) I went for a short walk after school (I’m a teacher) from Mt Donna Buang (1250m) to Mt Boobyalla. Mt Donna Buang is the closest summit to Melbourne that receives regular snowfalls each winter. A few hundred meters down the track from Mt Donna Buang’s summit is a big sign warning that the track is so rough that any winter snow traverses are so difficult beyond this point that further progress is not advised. Having walked parts of the track before I concurred with this advice so imagine my surprise when a few hundred meters on I came across this sight: The fallen leaves hide the reality a bit but previous to this the rough track was half overgrown and involved a lot pushing through scrub that encroached the narrow foot pad. Mt Donna Buang is just above Warburton in the Yarra Valley and is in the Maroondah Dam catchment area of which a large part was burnt on Black Saturday and the weeks following this disaster. On a number of days during the bushfire crisis warnings were issued that fire would most likely obliterate the area and mass evacuations took place. During this time I knew that the CFA was busy building extensive firebreaks but to see the scale of them up close was both disturbing and awe inspiring. Disturbing because on the surface the environmental impact looks truly horrible, awe inspiring that a containment line in excess of 30km could be constructed so quickly and effectively. Total respect for the efforts of the CFA volunteers, park rangers and dozer drivers on their formidable accomplishment in saving this part of the valley in the face of such an epic threat A few other post black Saturday pics taken 20km from here in Toolangi State Forest:

As an illustration of the reach of RedBubble and the oppurtunities this community can provide (and as a bit of self promotion at the same time as the title of this journal suggests) - I was recently contacted by a UK based boutique design agency Windfall Design who are setting up a second studio here in Melbourne. In conjunction with the establishment of the new studio they launched a new website and wanted to use one of my images Yarra River by Night to represent Melbourne on the sites contact pages which we were able to put in place. Windfall Designs found me and my image through RedBubble which was fantastic.

Hi guys, I haven’t been on much at all lately and haven’t taken many photos. I’m in my final semester at uni so been pretty busy with that and was really sick for a couple of weeks which wasn’t fun at all. Last friday I went up to Marysville with my mate Andy who also had a place up there to check out the town and also go up to see my parent’s new place which is amazing. Below are some pics from the day trip: A spider web just off to the side of our property: Dam just off to the side of our property: Marysville Road: Panorama of Marysville from Keppel’s Lookout: Marysville from Keppel’s Lookout: Our new place at Marysville :) Waterfall next to our property: Marysville Road:

In what a year that has had tremendous lows it was nice to receive my new (2nd hand) Subaru Forester XT last week. I owned a Liberty wagon before this car and have nothing but praise for Subaru and their cars, I haven’t stopped driving the new car since I got in on Wednesday. I took it up to Marysville and Lake Mountain on Saturday for a bit of a nice drive and took some pics along the way :) Enjoy On the side of the Lake Mountain Road: / A road that may or may not have been open to the public: Up the top of Lake Mountain:
