  • Taken in Main Street in Yangshou China and give a traetment to simplify the background.

  • Taken on a river near Yangshou in China. The day’s coming to an end and there are no more customers so the owners are bringing their rafts in for the night. The red seats and colourful umbrellas make for some interesting patterns.

  • This shows the amazing scenery of Yangshou, part of Guilin, China along the Li River.

  • Sunset over the Li river in Yanshou – China

  • The sightseeing is spectacular along the Youlong River near Yangshou, China. The color and detail in this Paul Jackson watercolor really does capture the feel of life in this southern Chinese area, noted for rock climbing, spelunking and, of course, it’s natural beauty. The painting is one of a series by the artist from a 2008 trip to China.

  • The first image I uploaded of this medicine seller on the streets of Yangshou, China, had him shoving a small snake into his gob…then I remembered I had a shot of his second act with a monstrous python. After he swallowed the entire serpent, he pulled it out of his nose…(just joking)

  • Some of the world’s most spectacular scenery can be found near the Li River town of Yangshou in southern China. Sheer limestone karst towers and grags rise between rice paddy fields and quaint villages. At the start of the wet season, mist lingers around the outcrops while brilliant green young rice carpets the valley floor. This photograph was taken in 1982, not long after the upheavals of Chairman Mao’s Cultural Revolution, when paddy fields became communal property. Nikon FM2 camera and 28mm nikkor lense, kodachrome slide film. The original slide was scanned at 3600 dpi and the dirt and mould removed as well as possible in photoshop with the image enlarged at 200%.

  • Yangshou, China and the Li river in moonlight. Thousands of extraordinary limestone towers make this area one of the most scenic on the planet. This photograph was taken in 1980 with a Nikon FM2, a nikkor 28mm lenses and kodachrome 64 ASA slide film. The camera was set on a rock and the shutter locked open with a release cable for a few minutes. the original slide was scanned at 7200 dpi then cropped slightly, with colours adjusted in photoshop.

  • China, 1982, and the excesses of the Cultural Revolution were history as the new regime warmed to the idea of opening up to the outside world and liberalising the economy. Some of the first people to take advantage of the changes were the ‘medicine’ sellers, tricksters and con men who hit the streets with gusto. This young man draws a large crowd of curious rural folk to his display in the market in Yangshou. He beguiled them with his banter before moving on to his overturned bowls and age-old tricks. Everyone likes a bit of magic and deception….

  • An exhibition of traditional paintings by young school children in Yangshou China, a town on banks of the Li River. Misty limestone crags, bamboo, and small sailing boats are commonly represented in traditional Chinese paintings. The tiny primary school that I visited in 1982 had a few dozen paintings pinned onto a wall, and I was amazed by the quality of every one of them.

  • A small village near Yangshou, China, is dwarfed by mist shrouded limestone crags. The people who live in this idyllic setting tend to take the surrounding landscape for granted. Nobody stops to marvel at the scenery as I was when I was wandering around the countryside. / Taken in 1982 with a Nikon FM2 and kodachrome slide film. Scanned at 7200 dpi with a little cleaning in photoshop.

  • The city among the limestone karsts in China. Nikon D50 18-70mm
