Worth more than gold? I think so…
The level of compassion that humans are capable of has never ceased to amase me. This picture has stayed with me for years, after first seeing it in a simple e-mail forward. RedBubble’s competition “Comapssion” was the perfect excuse to draw it. materials: compressed charcoal, kneadable erasure, cannon paper. / time: approx. 8 hours total
A heron fishing in the shallow water of Corio Bay in Geelong on a very calm afternoon. It was standing in a reflection of a white cloud which appears to have highlighted it. I waited for ages to snap him with a fish – so we were both rewarded for our patience. /
The Maori Wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus) is a wrasse that is mainly found in coral reefs in the Indo-Pacific region. It is also known as the Humphead wrasse, Napoleon wrasse or Napoleonfish. Sadly the lips and eyes of these amazing fish are considered a highly prized delicacy in some parts of the world. In 1999 the lips alone of this fish were “worth $300 USD or more…..”: http://www.sheddaquarium.org/SEa/fact_sheets.cfm?id=77 Not surprisingly the high price has led to significant overfishing, resulting in their inclusion as Endangered on the “IUCN Red List”: http://www.iucnredlist.org/ The humphead wrasse is the largest living member of the family Labridae, with males reaching 6 feet (2 m) in length, while females rarely exceed about 3 feet (1 m). It has thick, fleshy lips and a hump that forms on its head above the eyes, becoming more prominent as the fish ages. Males range from a bright electric blue to green, a purplish blue, or a relatively dull blue/green. Some males grow very large, with one unconfirmed report of a Humphead Wrasse that was 7.75 feet (2.29 m) long and weighed 420 lbs (190.5 kg). (Source: wikipedia) “Napoleon’s lips push fish into WWF’s 10 most wanted species list”: http://www.wwf.org.uk/news/n_0000001338.asp The fearsome great-white shark and the Napoleon wrasse – a huge ugly fish whose lips are prized as a delicacy in Asia – top this year’s “WWF 10 Most Wanted” list of species most at risk from international trade. / The Napoleon wrasse, otherwise known as the humphead or Maori wrasse, is being so heavily over-fished for its lips and and eyes – which are eaten as a delicacy – as well as its flesh, that it faces being wiped-out in many areas if the trade is not controlled.
finally after six visits I got the colours I was waiting for. / hdr
Fashion photography is a genre of photography devoted to displaying clothing and other fashion items. Fashion photography is most often conducted for advertisements or fashion magazines such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, or Allure. Over time, fashion photography has developed its own aesthetic in which the clothes and fashions are enhanced by exotic locations and story lines or could be having great models with different vehicles or animals just to be an eye catching effect. When I saw this prayer, written by an unknown author, at the Carmelite monastery where I do volunteer work, I knew I had to incorporate it into an image and offer its consoling words to those who are suffering from Alzheimer’s as well as to family, friends, and medical personnel who care for those afflicted with this disease. I chose an image of a cloud-filled sky as the sun was setting because those with Alzheimer’s are largely in the sunset of their lives and have to contend with many issues that cloud their lives. Prayer for an Alzheimer’s Sufferer Please grant my visitors tolerance for my confusion, / Forgiveness for my irrationality, / and the strength to walk with me / Into the mist of memory my world has become. Please let them take my hand and stay awhile / Even though I seem unaware of their presence. / Help them to know how their strength and loving care / Will drift slowly into the days to come / Just when I need it most. Let them know when I don’t recognize them / that I will . . . I will. / Keep their hearts free from sorrow for me / For my sorrow when it comes only lasts a moment – / then it’s gone. And finally please let them know / how very much their visits mean, / How, even through this relentless mystery, / I can still feel the love. Amen
another image from the Fragmented Self Image series for my photography final project. We are often labelled with words or names that are not true to who we are. We can either submit to the labels or we can see our own self worth and confront the issue, fight back, defend ourselves, regardless of how painful and difficult it may be to break through the labels.

The old core of the village occupies a rocky peninsula. High up on the headland, surrounded on three sides by water, stands the Late Gothic parish church, a prominent landmark; note the fine Baroque interior, the Romanesque crypt and the 15th-16th C. high altar with a beautiful Late Gothic figure of the Virgin. In the churchyard there is a round charnel house of 1278. Close by stands the little 12th C. Rosenkranzkirche (Rosary Church) or Winter Church, with well preserved Romanesque frescos of the Apostles. The picturesque village of Maria Worth is situated on the south shore of Lake Wörthersee and is one of the most charming scenic pearls of Carinthian beauty
I’ve done this image for a reason, to make some one think, think that Suicide is not the way out. I have delt with the after shock of Suicide for 41 years, My dad and I came home from work and I found my Mother lying across my bed dead from a bullet to the head. She had been very depressed but we didn’t think it would ever lead to this. Yes my Mother had been relieved of her depression, but she ruined my life forever. That was 41 years ago and I still have the guilt that I could have done something for her, I have the flashbacks every day of seeing her body laying across my bed with her life blood draining into my mattress. With our service men coming home from Iraq there has been reported a suicide once a week, or the man that kills his family then himself, or the teen that thinks he or she has nothing in life to live for, or a lonely woman who thinks her family dosn’t love her. / I hope the viewer dosn’t think this image is too morbid or shouldn’t be shown, because I feel If I can make one person think that Suicide is never worth it and seek help then I did what I set out to do. / Larry Why Do Teens Try to Kill Themselves? / Most teens interviewed after making a suicide attempt say that they did it because they were trying to escape from a situation that seemed impossible to deal with or to get relief from really bad thoughts or feelings. Like Ethan, they didn’t want to die as much as they wanted to escape from what was going on. And at that particular moment dying seemed like the only way out. Some people who end their lives or attempt suicide might be trying to escape feelings of rejection, hurt, or loss. Others might be angry, ashamed, or guilty about something. Some people may be worried about disappointing friends or family members. And some may feel unwanted, unloved, victimized, or like they’re a burden to others. We all feel overwhelmed by difficult emotions or situations sometimes. But most people get through it or can put their problems in perspective and find a way to carry on with determination and hope. So why does one person try suicide when another person in the same tough situation does not? What makes some people more resilient (better able to deal with life’s setbacks and difficulties) than others? What makes a person unable to see another way out of a bad situation besides ending his or her life? The answer to those questions lies in the fact that most people who commit suicide have depression. Fishing Boats / Worthing / Sussex canon powershot s50
sometimes the best sunrises to be seen are on mornings when the sky is just seething with the promise of storms all day… like here when I braved the wretched weather and was rewarded with a few moments of true golden glory as the sun rose into the heavy cloud mass …. interestingly as the sun rose the sky just got darker and darker and as the storms out to sea got closer and closer I couldn’t bring myself to leave the vantage point I had. I ended up taking a whole series of quite amazing shots in sequence before the rain hit and I had to make a dash for shelter. And as it’s a grey rainy day here again I’m going to post a few of those shots today starting with this one…. / . /
the storm out to sea is getting closer and closer and as the sun rises the morning gets darker and darker…. still I am unable to make myself leave my vantage point on the cliff top as it’s all just too dramatic and exciting and the rain is still a few minutes off so I stay and revel in the mesmerizing beauty of the morning….the little outpost of rock you can see down in the left hand corner is actually a huge cliff face which can also be seen in this image called fishing fools / . /
.just clean it up and try again. 2009
Art Deco architecture on Worthing Pier, am doing a series of the pier for a local shop, will add some history re the architecture shortly..
A giant pink Dahlia. But really some have a good amount of mauve in them too. This flower is just about to curl… and die, but it’s still pretty! Just because something is dying, does not mean that there is no worth to it. Even if it’s is just an “every day miracle”. Think what a “real” miracle of life” is worth! HUMAN LIFE! /
/ / A friend of mine thinks donkeys are such noble animals… well, this ain’t no donkey, however, I do sense some nobility residing in this creature. So thank you close friend for making me see more…. / / /
