  • / From the Series Landscape… “Winter Storm”..... Watercolour on Arches Paper… Announced by all the trumpets of the sky, / Arrives the snow, and, driving o’er the fields, / Seems nowhere to alight: the whited air / Hides hills and woods, the river, and the heaven, / And veils the farmhouse at the garden’s end. / The sled and traveler stopped, the courier’s feet / Delayed, all friends shut out, the housemates sit / Around the radiant fireplace, enclosed / In a tumultuous privacy of storm. Ralph Waldo Emerson

  • / “Gale Force” is part of the Series “Green” and the “Weather” Series.... The Earth and all her nuances….this painting was inspired by an out of print book on weather…then I saw a photo of a hurricane in a book for painters about 15 years ago…..recently I remembered both images and created Gale Force…..but it is my own particular vision of the effects of such a storm… to get the feeling of constant movement, I painted it in an unfettered very loose style....Janis Watercolour on Arches Paper Green’ is the most flagrantly uninhibited dance of every organism alive; / As the unsurpassable buckets of rain, pelted unfettered from / the belly of fathomless sky”. Nikhil Parekh /

  • Here on the lovely river tweed near Selkirk in scottish borders the salmon are swimming hard against the flow to return to their spawning grounds upstream without stopping for a bite to eat and have a tough job trying to leap up some of the many obstacles in their way… I caught this slippery customer at a salmon ladder outside selkirk in the scottish borders but already the light was against me…. the spray on the lens from the falls didn’t help much either… Taken from this side of the river he was was leaping near the opposite bank in the very top left hand corner of this : / Settings at full zoom on a compact Olympus SP560 UZ were shutter priority ..f4.5, 1/500sec, ISO 80… / Any comments, tips or suggestions most welcome ;) What I really should have done was drive at least a 10mile detour to find a bridge , cross the river and grab a machete to cut my way through to a better spot on the opposite bank where the lighting at least would have been better… Of course when i see the amazing works by the skilfully talented dsargent / like this and this I wish I could do it over … / But at least I caught something – and you should have seen the ones that got away…............ teeheehehee …....... / :))

  • During our visit to the Butterfly farm, Sally nearly gave me a Heart attack by letting out a scream, After gtetting up from the floor, This is what I observed. The two species of lizard within the genus Iguana possess a dewlap, a row of spines running down their back to their tail, and a third “eye” on their head. This eye is known as the parietal eye, visible as a pale scale on the top of the head. Behind their neck are small scales which resemble spikes, known as tuberculate scales. They also have a large round scale on their cheek known as a subtympanic shield. Iguanas have excellent vision and are able to see shapes, shadows, color and movement at long distances. Iguanas use their eyes to navigate through crowded forests, as well as for finding food. They also use visual signals to communicate with members of the same species. They respond to visual stimulus of colors such as orange, yellow, pink, and in rare cases blue as food substances. An iguana’s ear is known as the tympanum. It is the iguana’s ear drum, and is located right above the subtympanic shield and behind the eye. The color green helps as a mode of hiding. /

  • This idyllic spot yesterday morning was Clachtoll Beach with glorious white sand, indescribably turquoise water and blazing hot sun. Two hours later we, and five other equally stupid friends, were caught out in a torrential downpour, thunder and lightening and were soaked to the skin in seconds! We staggered back to the cars, fighting against a roaring wind and what felt like fire hoses against us and sat in our cars for over 1/2 hour before the storm abated. Then we had a three hour drive home along flooded roads, sitting in wet clothes and with our shoes sloshing water. Now we are trying to dry out the car! /
