  • Bela,as a Rotweiller pup with her first chew. Rescued from the back of a van, she had been weened early and had been ‘caged’ in a van as the owner travelled the local area selling pet supplies. A very special dog as she timed her arrival with our tenth wedding anniversary and truly settling ın Turkey. I had had Rottweiler rescue dogs in the UK and had fallen in love with the breed – Roxy and Clyde are dear departed friends. She mated with Troy in January 2009 and produced a wonderful litter of pups: they were born on the anniversary of Clyde’s passing a year ealier. From the litter we intended to keep a boy and name him Clyde after the dog we rehomed with friends in the UK and possibly a girl (Mollie). Sadly, we fell in love and kept four …Mollie, Bonnie and Fluff. Bela is now neutered. The Rottweiler, or Rottweil Metzgerhund (“Butchers Dog”), is a “medium to large size, stalwart dog” breed originating in Germany as a herding dog. It is a hardy and very intelligent breed. Rottweilers also worked as draught dogs, pulling carts to carry meat and other products to market. “Rottweiler breeders aim at a dog of abundant strength, black coated with clearly defined rich tan markings, whose powerful appearance does not lack nobility and which is exceptionally well suited to being a companion, service and working dog.” The Rottweiler was kept busy in these traditional roles until the mid-19th century when railroads replaced droving for getting livestock to market. Although there are still Rottweilers working stock all over the world, many other roles have been found for this versatile breed. During the first and second World Wars, Rottweilers were put into service in various roles including as messenger, draught and guard dogs. Currently they are often used as search and rescue, assistance, guide dogs for the blind, guard and police dogs in addition to their traditional roles. Although an extremely versatile breed used in recent times for many other purposes, the Rottweiler is first and foremost one of the oldest, if not the oldest, of herding breeds. A multi-faceted herding and stock protection dog of exceptional ability, it is capable of working all kinds of livestock under a wide variety of conditions. The breed is an ancient one, whose history stretches back to the Roman Empire. In those times, the legions traveled with their meat on the hoof and required the assistance of working dogs to herd the cattle. One route the army traveled was through Württemberg and on to the small market town of Rottweil. The principal ancestors of the first Rottweilers during this time was supposed to be the Roman droving dog, local dogs the army met on its travels, and dogs with molosser appearance coming from England and The Netherlands. This region eventually became an important cattle area, and the descendants of the Roman cattle dogs proved their worth in both driving and protecting the cattle from robbers and wild animals. However, by the end of the 19th century as railroads became the main method for moving stock to market, the breed had declined so much that in 1900 there was only one female to be found in the town of Rottweil. • Experimenting with Digital TTV ( – Not a Photoshop filter) – my first time! This is a very anonymous picture. Each of the three visible characters (dog included) are entirely personality-less, due to their backs being turned or heads obscured. And yet, the camera’s angle is facing up to the characters, from a very low angle. Draw conclusions to this as you wish.

  • ACEO / miniature art inspired by a photo taken by Dregsplod (flickr creative commons) and which was used with her kind permission. The artwork was completed in coloured pencil and ink on drafting film.

  • Pastel on Canson paper (gold – smooth side) – 35cm x 50cm The gold colour of the paper worked really well to give ‘warmth’ to this painting. I did this in the woolshed of a local property – ‘Denallabar ’ – (the name is on the wool bale by the door). The working dogs are ‘Sally’ and ‘Kitch’, patiently waiting to get the next ‘run’ of sheep in for the shearers. • My Doggie T-shirt designs were created by artist Barbara Anne Applegate back in the early 80’s I was house bound with an ailing husband that needed constant , constant supervision although he slept most of the time. So with lots of time on my hands I began drawing using colored Sharpie pens and when I needed white, I would use a liquid white ink pen. So they are kind of pen and ink creations, I’m not really sure what to call them. / My designs were first used to create jewelry, then in the late 90’s I used them again to create doggie animation. Now in 2009 I am re-scanning the original art work and making Graphic art designs for T-shirts. / Transparancy and any text created in Photoshop. / 513 Views Featured on the Red Bubble home page. / September 29th 2009 / Featured in / First Things 12/10/09
