A bad day for hanging
In the moment his hand closed around his weapon, / His mind readied itself for the battle. / Man against the machine.
Oil on Canvas. The great trek to work, is it evening or morning that he embarks on his journey into the big city. Reflections on how work can dominate family life. Ironically we need to work to acheive the Australian suburban dream.

Made after a conversation with my friend David about how he thinks that working is a form of theft. Thanks also to my muse kez for her curatorial suggestions here. / . / . / Based on a photograph released by the Huddersfield University precision technology centre of an ant carrying a 1mm square microchip. / . / . / See Worker Ant – Part 2 / . /
Working elephants in Ao nang Thailand. I wouldnt go home until I saw that they had thier wash at the end of the day..the smaller one is a female and she is 45 years old. The larger one is a male who is 20 Years of age.
This is the second installament for my Old TImers series It brings to light those who have dedicated decades to their chosen occupation, craft or trade, some by choice others through need. A trait which is rapidly diminishing in todays society where people are in constant flux between jobs, careers and hobbies. / This is a salute to the Old Timers! This is Brett, an industrial metal polisher by trade. He has been at it for decades and is well skilled in the art of making metal shine. A real Larrakin at heart but not someone you’d want to get on the wrong side of. An updated bio to come soon… I hope you enjoy! Cheers!
Angers, france
Yangshou, China. These workmen were constructing what I think was some sort of performance stage over the river. They just stopped in the middle of the day, downed tools and took a quick nap after lunch. Way to go!!!! /

For a change I wasn’t the one welding so I took the oppurtunity to get a few shots in.Always enjoyable watching someone else work.
I took this shot in Eastern Hungary. I was driving home from Ukraine when I saw this man. I immediately stopped the car and grabbed my camera, which was always with me. I hardly wanted to believe that there were still people in Europe who used horses for ploughing.
This shot was the main centre-spread of a feature I recently had published in Tokyo’s ‘Metropolis’ magazine. It has also featured recently in mags in Australia, Singapore and Poland. To beging with the guy hanging out of the window spotted me and then just wouldnt lean out again. I attached my camera to a 10ft monopod, put a cable-release on and held the camera out with an 11mm lens on it. He thought I had walked off and I still got exactly the angle I wanted….

An original cinema4D render plus some blended layers. / (CINEMA 4D is a commercial, cross-platform, high-end 3-D graphics application, produced by MAXON Computer, Germany.)
Part of the “Out of Place” series exploring the culture / nature divide – our alienation from nature. I find it perplexing just how easily we humans get mesmerised by work that is often intrinsically meaningless and the virtual world which seems mainly mired in trivia. It’s all the more strange when you consider that the bulk of humanity has only lived in cities for less than 100 years. Prior to that, for countless millennia the natural world was all we knew. / I spend hours in the Park and it’s interesting watching the way other people relate to it. For example, this set of falls is literally 1 minute off the main road through the Park. There are 3 sets of fall each more majestic than the one before. And yet the average amount of time that people spend here I’ve noticed is less than than 10 minutes. 10 minutes!! And then off home to get ready for work or to sit down and watch 4 hours of T.V. / I / just / don’t / get / it. / Still – one advantage – fewer people to bugger up my shots. / Anyway this is part of a series attempting to portray this collective psychosis of our species. Yes she is actually sitting there on top of a 30m waterfall – not photoshopped- very brave I thought, though we did take the wheels off the chair so she didn’t go sailing over. Every now and then working in monochrome is a treat. Rather than focusing so much on color, you can concentrate on light and dark and shape and form. It is a different exercise and one I enjoy. The medium is watercolor, I use Arches cold pressed 100% cotton paper, and the dimensions of the original painting are 14 inches x 16 inches.
