A woolshed with a most unusual octagonal design is registered with the National Trust as a building of significance. The original shed was built in 1861 but burnt down. Rebuilt in 1869, it is also one of the oldest and largest sheds in Australia. It’s three-tier roof with a clerestory of glass ventilators allowed shearers to work in a well lit and ventilated environment. The shed is still in use today. Best viewed LARGE
The woolshed at Cordillo Downs once had stands for 120 shearers which makes it Australia’s biggest woolshed. It was a good thing that it was so big, because by the early 20th century, Cordillo Downs, with 85,000 sheep, was Australia’s biggest sheep station. Not any more though. Today, the station runs cattle … ~7,000 of them. Buggered if I know what the cattle eat though. There’s not a lot of grass out there. There’s not a lot of trees either, which is why the woolshed is made of stones .. they’ve got lots of them … :-)

Slowly, softly, sadly settling into the dust and cracks of the shearing shed are the memories of the bleats of the sheep and the shouts of the shearers. The shears are down and quiet, the holding pens empty and time for a well earned cuppa, a pie and break during the shearing session at Charlemont Station. Pentax istDS Camera.

In 1864, Robert rand Purchased Urangaline from the Osborne Bros of Brookong for 38 000 pounds cash. The deal included 107 000 acres and 38 000 sheep. The shed was hand made – from stands of Murray and Cyprus Pine. The columns swere sunk to 1.3 metres and stood 5 metres above the floor. In 1889 another section was added and by the time they had finished, Urangaline was the largest woolshed in the world, with 101 stands….Brookong, not to be outdone, added another stand to their shed making it 102 stands. The number of machines were finally reduced to 75, improving effeciency to the point that in 1892, 260 000 sheep were shorn for a record clip of 5, 500 bales. ( Thanks to Chris Madden for the access and history) / Note Urangaline is a heritage listed shed. /
