In the Tarantula Nebula, there is a planet just outside the orbit of the gas giant “Talon”.The planet is known by surfers across the Galaxy as “Surfer-girl’s Dream” discovered by a young lady who surfed it alone for many years before opening it up to other surfers. When Talon rises the tides are huge, waves have being measured exceeding 120 meters,a long tube can last for up to 5 hours,so pack a lunch. Here we see the lady herself surfing what she named the “Vortex”.
View from the red dwarf Gliese 581. Sol System. Red dwarfs are the most common star type in the Galaxy, at least in the neighborhood of the Sun. Planetary habitability of red dwarf star systems was always subject to some debate until man first landed on Neptune. / From the observatory based there, a study was made of Giliese 581, and eventually a team landed to explore. They discovered no life, but ruins were found suggesting some being(s) had dwelt there, still the ruins were quite small in area. Exploration of nearby space is ongoing.
Just a pretty butterfly….
Location: Central New Hampshire Art critic Clement Greenberg made the hypothesis years ago that Impressionism was the first step taken by modern art to get away from the illusion of space that had predominated painting for hundreds of years. Expressionism and the growth of the abstract painiting was seen as the logical conclusion of this process. Here “Surface Tension” balances that theory with an illusionistic space where all the subjects attempt to define the surface just in case you were thinking we were not aware of this critical assessment of the world and ‘progress’ of painting away from space. This work was featured in Painted Dogs, August 2009, and in Realist Traditional Art, July 2009. Dateline July 3rd 2009 – Artist Dave Martsolf today installed the 4’ x 6’ oil painting “Surface Tension” in a vacant retail ground level window on Washington Street in Boston as part of the city’s Boston Art Windows project. The project, sponsored by the Boston Revelopment Authority, Mayor Menino and the City of Boston, brings high quality art to empty retail space that is available between leases in order to maintain the cultural promise of the city to its citizens. “Surface Tension” will be offered multiple sites as space availability changes throughout the near future. The piece, originally conceived as a counterpoint argument to American art critic Clement Greenberg’s flat painting surface paradigm of American Expressionism, is perfectly at home in its window setting as the people in the painting with hands raised against an invisible surface appear to be pressing their palms against the window itself. “Surface Tension” was the 1985 winner of the Sawyer Memorial Award for Painting at the 38th Annual New Hampshire Art Association Exhibition at the Currier Gallery of Art in Manchester, NH. From the collection of Mark Martsolf, but offered here for prints. What does it take to make a civilization? Some monuments perhaps. The lights are on here and the data is being collected in this rather ancient civilization that still worships punch cards. Ah, the green green fields of home! Let’s Pay Homage to . . . This is a great painting for a child’s bedroom or play area. There is a small man floating in the yellow bowl, probably dreaming, with all of his childhood imaginary friends surrounding him. The original oil painting has been sold, but prints through RB are still available. “Friends” was featured in the Imaginative Realism group in August 2009. “Friends” was also featured in “Voyage of the Surrealists” in August 2009. I love absract forms that sit on the edge between pure abstraction and a surrealism where the observer can imagine known objects or anthropormorphic shapes. I also love light. Here is use a hidden light in deep space that is lighting up realistic three-dimensional space. The globular cluster M13 is of course in the Messier object in the constellation Hercules. I have always had an interest in astronomy, cosmology, and metaphysics in general. Newer works are going to be filled with sunshine. It’s out there. The painting makes use of the hand-drawn sketch as a basis with the end painting being the beginning and end for color palette definition, meaning colorized from the heart and head through the brush and onto the canvas with no intervening studies. This work has was featured in the Avant Garde group after having placed 5th in the Homage to Dali Challenge hosted by that group. September 2009 It was also featured in the Let’s Pay Homage group, also in September 2009. Two people, an adult and child, both float in clouds that weave far out in space over a planet that also forms the head of the earth mother god Gaia. The idea is to show how fragile our little blue planet is. We should all think a bit about the word stewardship in this respect. This small blue marble is all we have and all we really have to give to our children. This 3D image is from an old screensaver I made years ago called “Alien Babes”. I was really sucking up to the male computer geek mentality, but the days of pay-for-screensavers were numbered as Hollywood figured out it was a great way to promote new movies – screensavers for free! Back in the 1990’s I had created Damsel Software Group and made dozens of screensavers, some realistic, and some like this one. The ‘Alien Babes’ screensaver featured Picque Dayton’s trip across the universe through lands where women rule the lands. Here, Picque has just arrived through warp travel in Hive City where she will journy to the top platform of the hive and jump off the edge into a wormhole in order to travel to her final destination, an Alien Babes vacation resort. All the Alien Babes scenes were created using Poser, Bryce and Photoshop. In Red Bubble “Alien Hive City” was featured in C.O.R.E in September 2009. This is a very autonomic piece that grew by itself with no conscious direction other than seeing faces that were made more expressive quickly in a way that matched the vibrational energies of the line itself. The original drawing was done on ordinary acid free sketch paper. This is the original drawing that spawned a watercolor of the same name. The piece is meant to showcase care for our planet, as it is in a battle for its life. The signature is the Chinese character “ma” (3rd tone) meaning horse, but also the first sound of my English last name. The three adjacent horizontal lines are “san”, meaning 3, meaning the work was penned in 2003. The watercolored copy of this piece is known as Odalisque and you can see it here. / Calendars for Friends Surreal Paintings Calendar / Surreal Watercolors Calendar Glacier National Park Calendar / Roses Calendar / Works Featured in Red Bubble Groups
The Last Supper has always been painted as though by an observer. But, to me the point of all Christian teaching is to understand the world through the eyes of Christ. At the very least we should all try to emulate the greatness of the man. So, what better way to feel our responsibility to others and learn how we should act toward one another than to put ourselves in Christ’s shoes so to speak. This painting tries to do that, and tries to catch the moment when all the disciples (only some of them shown here in modern dress) suddenly realize what Chirst is doing and what will happen soon in the future. This is a “Let’s Pay Homage” to all the painters in the last who have painted “The Last Supper” and to the good tenet of the religion that the work is based on. “The Last Supper” was featured in Hand Painted or Drawn Buildings and Architecture in August 2009. It was also in the top ten of the PiMT group challenge Art in Art in August 2009, and was featured in the Imaginative Realism group in September 2009.
The sky is blue. This was made with an old Kai’s Power Tools program which was then worked on with motion blurs, edge smoothers, sharpeners (but only at some of the prominent edges, increased saturation, and some brightness contrast.
