Wodonga was the Victorian Broad gauge terminus near the Victoria-New South Wales break of gauge. There were a lot of goods trains moving around the yards. My son was just as keen as I was to get close, but wisdom suggested we should both look from a distance. This meant that he was not close enough to the train, but it was safer that way. 20091215 357 views.

Bethanga Bridge was built between 1927 and 1930 as a joint venture between New South Wales and Victoria as part of the Hume Dam project as a key element of the River Murray Waters Agreement put in place in 1915 by the Victorian, New South Wales, South Australian and Federal governments to regulate the flow of the Murray River as a provision against drought and to ensure that the three states received their agreed share of water. With great distances to cover, when the Australian states began to install railways, there was one thorn in the great thing they were doing. They all wanted the gauge to be different. I grew up near the border between New South Wales and Victoria and our trains were different. It is only a few years ago that they began converting Victoria to the same gauge as NSW (and Europe), but they have not yet completed the task. This was taken in 1996 not long after they got the track completed between Albury and Melbourne enabling a ‘Country Link’, between Sydney and Melbourne Taken with Pentax camera and 70-300 mm Sigmalens on Kodachrome film.
This is soon to become history. They have been talking about altering the train route to Albury to bypass the centre of Wodonga for years. It is now being discussed seriously and officially they have made a decision. When it takes effect I do not know, but I had better try and get back soon if I want more shots like this which remind me of my childhood. I used to catch the train here to got to school in Melbourne. It was a real steam train pulled by an S-class locomotive. Taken with a Pentax camera and Pentax 28 mm shift lens on Kodachrome 200 film.
