OK… here are my 2 favorite pieces of WI Trivia in the music category. Number One / Otis Redding is known best for his record “Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay”. He and his band The Bar-Kays had a gig scheduled for December 10, 1967 at The Factory night club in Madison. As his plane was preparing to land, it crashed into Lake Monona (close to where Monona Terrace is now) killing 26 year old Redding, his manager, four members of the band and the pilot. Band member Ben Cauly was the only person on board to survive the crash; additional band member James Alexander was on a commercial flight. The scheduled opening act for Redding that night was a band from Rockford, IL called… The Grim Reapers (creepy, hey). The Grim Reapers went through a few changes and reached the pinnacle of rock stardom a decade later under their new name… Cheap Trick! Number Two / Rock and blues guitarist Steve Miller’s first guitar teacher was his godfather and Milwaukee neighbor… Les Paul; Steve was just five years old. His father was Les Paul’s best man at Paul’s wedding to singer Mary Ford. Les Paul was not only a great guitarist himself, but also an inventor. He developed the solid-body electric guitar, multitrack recording, overdubbing, and numerous other music technologies. Rock and roll and the recorded music we listen to today could not have happened without Les Paul’s inventions and there is hardly a serious rock guitarist who doesn’t own a Gibson Les Paul guitar. Les Paul died on Auguust 14, 2009 at age 94; up until a few weeks before his death, he was still performing two shows every Monday night at the Iridium Jazz Club in New York City. Back to Steve Miller… when he was a student at the University of Wisconsin in Madison in the 1960s, he formed a band called the Ardells; Boz Scaggs and Ben Sidran were bandmates. Scaggs had a few hit songs in the mid-1970s and Sidran is a Grammy winning jazz performer, writer and producer. Steve Miller taught Ben’s son Leo how to play the guitar and Leo would later write 4 of the songs on Wide River, Miller’s fifteenth album (released in 1993), when he was only 15 years old. Leo is more known as a drummer and got his first lessons from Madisonian Clyde Stubblefield, James Brown’s former drummer, one of the creators of the Funk style and the most sampled drummer in the world. Leo has also won an Oscar for writing the soundtrack for the movie The Motorcycle Diaries. The end.

More on Leo Sidran… he got his first drum lesson from his father’s friend and one of the best drummers in the world… Madison resident Clyde Stubblefield. Clyde was James Brown’s drummer and is considered the inventor of funk drumming. He is also considered the most sampled drummer in the world. Clyde’s drum sticks are enshrined in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in between Ringo Starr and Charlie Watts. The Nirvana album Nevermind, which includes the grunge anthem “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, was produced by Madisonian Butch Vig and recorded at Smart Studio on East Washington Avenue in Madison. Because of his work with Nirvana, U2, Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails, Korn, etc., Vig has earned the nickname Guru of Grunge. He also plays the drums in the Grammy nominated band Garbage, along with fellow Madisonians Steve Marker and Duke Erickson and Scottish singer Shirley Manson. Garbage wrote and performed the theme song for the James Bond movie “The World is Not Enough”. Elvis Costello wrote the song “Green Shirt” after a doctor’s appointment at the Quisling Clinic in Madison. Van Halen was banned from the Sheraton Hotel in Madison after they trashed their rooms during a 3 day stay during their 1978 Tour. They dedicated their second album “Van Halen II” to the hotel. Stevie Ray Vaughn played his last performance in 1990 with Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy and his brother Jimmie Vaugh at Alpine Valley in East Troy. He was killed leaving the venue when his helicopter crashed upon takeoff into the hillside behind the stage. The group Two Happy Cowboys from Madison composed the theme song for the TV show “Northern Exposure”, starring Rob Morrow. Fort Atkinson native Steve Sperry composed the music for the TV show ”Fame”. Milwaukee native Al Jareau sang the theme song for the TV show “Moonlighting”, that starred Bruce Willis and Cybil Sheppard. He also starred on Broadway in “Grease”, playing the Teen Angel. Dale Sticha of Madison is Elton John’s personal piano technician. Milwaukee band Violent Femmes was formed when two of the members played at a high school Honor Society induction ceremony. They broke from the playlist and performed “Gimmee The Car” which got one of the members suspended from school. Their song “Kiss Off” was written about the experience. Violent Femmes was discovered while they were playing in front of Milwaukee’s Oriental Theater and were invited in to open the show for The Pretenders. Rhythm and Blues artist and Milwaukee native Eric Benet was married to Halle Berry. They divorced because of his frequent infidelities. Idiot! Abrams and Milwaukee native Pee Wee King wrote “Tennessee Waltz”. Gene Autry gave him the name Pee Wee because there were so many Franks in Autry’s band. Cher sang back ground vocals on the Righteous Brother’s recording “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling”. Bobby Hatfield, half of the righteous duo, was born in Beaver Dam. Paul Black of Madison is considered the most sampled guitarist in the world. Michael Jackson owns the rights to “On Wisconsin”. He bought it from Paul McCartney. Other Wisconsin connected musicians: / Greg Graffin – Bad Religion, Madison and Racine / Jerry Harrison – guitar and keyboards for Talking Heads, Milwaukee / Jeff Pilson – bassist for Dokken, Whitefish Bay / Adrien Belew – guitarist for Frank Zappa and David Bowie, Lake Geneva / Joe Schermie – bassist for Three Dog Night, Madison / Jane Wiedlin – guitarist for the Go-Go’s, Oconomowoc / Bill Berry – drummer for R.E.M., Wauwatosa / James “Curley” Cook – guitarist for Steve Miller Band and Muddy Waters Band, Wausau / Daryl Stuermer – guitarist for Genesis, Phil Collins and Jean-Luc Ponty, Milwaukee / Howie Epstein – bassist for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Milwaukee / Aerie Taree Jones – singer for Arrested Development, Madison / Reed Kailing – guitarist for the Grass Roots, John Lenon, Kiki Dee, Mick Jagger and Badfinger, Madison / George LeGros – singer and bassist for the Buckinghams, Madison / Tommy James – singer for Tommy James and the Shondells, Monroe / Andy Linderman – harmonica for Muddy Waters and The Doobie Brothers, Madison / Bill Lordan – drummer for Jimmie Hendrix, and Sly and the Family Stone, Fond du Lac / Speech/Todd Thomas – lead singer for Arrested Development, Milwaukee / Jon French – drummer for Curtis Mayfield, Madison (I work with him; a great guy!)

Today, is the 33rd anniversary of the sinking of the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald. The great ship, a steel bulk cargo freighter and the largest on the Great Lakes at the time, left port at Superior, Wisconsin, mid-afternoon on November 9, 1975 for Detroit, Michigan with a 26+ ton load of taconite pellets (iron ore). A gale quickly kicked up, as typical during November, known on Lake Superior as “The Month of Storms”. The ship reported waves of 10 feet/3+ meters high at 1:00 and 7:00 AM, November 10. Afternoon radio transmissions reported top side damage and listing; a half hour later, the ship lost radar and was taking heavy seas over the deck. Waves were reported to be 30 feet/9+ meters. The Fitzgerald radioed another ship near by, the Anderson at 7:10 PM. The ship entered a squall and disappeared from the Anderson’s radar at 7:25 PM, near the northern tip of Whitefish Point, Michigan. 29 men, aged 21-63 are lost at sea in one of the fiercest storms ever on Lake Superior. All around the Lake Superior region, bells will be rung today 30 times – once for each of the 29 crew members who died on the Fitzgerald, and once for all of the rest of the victims of shipwrecks on the Great Lakes. / Let us not forget these souls lost at sea, November 10, 1975: / Michael Armagost; Iron River, Wisconsin / Frederick Beetcher; Superior, Wisconsin / Thomas Bentsen; St. Joseph, Michigan / Edward Bindon; Fairport Harbor, Ohio / Thomas Borgeson; Duluth, Minnesota / Oliver Champeau; Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin / Nolan Church; Silver Bay, Minnesota / Ransom Cundy; Superior, Wisconsin / Thomas Edwards; Oregon, Ohio / Russell Haskell; Millbury, Ohio / George Holl; Cabot, Pennsylvania / Bruce Hudson; North Olmsted, Ohio / Allen Kalmon; Washburn, Wisconsin / Gortdon MacLellan; Clearwater, Florida / Joseph Mazes; Ashland, Wisconsin / John McCarthy; Bay Willage, Ohio / Ernest McSorley; Toledo, Ohio / Eugene O’Brien; Toledo, Ohio / Karl Peckol; Ashtabula, Ohio / John Poviach; Bradenton, Florida / James Pratt; Lakewood, Ohio / Robert Rafferty; Toledo, Ohio / Paul Riippa; Ashtabula, Ohio / John Simmons; Ashland, Wisconsin / William Spengler; Toledo, Ohio / Mark Thomas; Richmond Heights, Ohio / Ralph Walton; Fremont, Ohio / David Weiss; Agoura, California / Blaine Wilhelm; Moquah, Wisconsin The S.S. Edmund Fitrzgerald is immortalized in the song, “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”, released by Gordon Lightfoot in 1976. The ship was found in May 1976, broken in two sections in 530 feet/161.5 meters of water.. The bell was raised in 1995, restored and replaced on the ship by a new bell with the names of the 29 men aboard who lost their lives. This is the last time that the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald will ever again be legally dived upon. (source: ssefo.com) The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down / Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee / The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead / When the skies of November turn gloomy. / (opening lines of “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”, by Gordon Lightfoot)

We entered the Whooper Viewing Area – an amphitheater to water-level viewing area – as the only humans there. So far so good. We succeeded brilliantly, for a while. There were no Whoopers visible when we arrived. But we certainly knew they were there. The two males were vocalizing a great deal. They aren’t called Whoopers for nothing! They are loud! As I set up my tripod, I attended to answering the machine-gun bursts of questions Brooklyn began laying down in my direction. I love her thirst for knowledge. We share the sanguine temperament with an incurable curiosity and the melancholy desire to create. Thus we track so well that we move in an amazing synchronous dance of ask, answer, discuss, pause, contemplate, grin and begin it all over again. She just really gets my creative and instructive juices to flowing. We were deep into a discussion of the ecological systemic failures that have caused the demise of the Whoopers and imperiled the rest of our natural resources … yes, in just those terms, too, when the boys made their entrance. I just love our little curious, brainiac princess! She’s my favorite color of pink! Just as she was in the middle of asking where the Whoopers were, I saw the head of one bobbing through the tall prairie grass in their enclosure. I had the camera ready and pointed them out to her. She watched with the glow of anticipation you see only in the eyes of a child when they first experience special moments in their life! WOW! What an incredible opportunity for me to witness this moment with her. Normally quite chatty, she was silenced. Raptured into stunned silence by the size and grace of these large cranes. Then they vocalized. She nearly jumped out of her skin! Recovering quickly she looked at me and said, “Grandpa! Those birds are very loud.” I said, “Well, that’s why they call them Whoopers, because their vocalizations sound like very loud, ‘Whoops!’. Wrapped in a big smile, she said, “Cool.” The Whoopers were most cooperative and performed with the grace one would expect from one of the more majestic representatives of the natural world. I captured many images – a few will appear here over the coming weeks. But this one just caught my eye as I was scanning the crop. So I determined to run it through the eLITHOGRAPH© process and see if it held true. I believe it did. The two males – probably due to the cool weather and the noise of nearby Sandhill Cranes – began to get rather feisty. They started jumping and suddenly they took off in their own ‘clipped’ form of flight to the far side of the viewing area pond. Momentary Flight is from the photograph taken at the moment the juvenile crane realized he was the only crane left in his area! Hooray for the slowness of youth. It is only matched by the slowness of age. The photo is a bit too blurred to present as a photo but for an eLITHOGRAH© it’s just perfect. Hello everyone! As you may know, I do senior portraits as well as all the other portrait work I do. I have done senior portraits for myself, a friend, and a co-worker. It doesn’t sound like much, but that’s only counting things meant for senior portraits. I’ve done plenty of portrait work with people too young or too old to need senior portraits. In order to spread the word, I figured I’d post the information on my senior portrait services here on RedBubble as well. What do I provide? / -A shoot tailored to your wants and interests. I have locations available for the girly, the grungy, the light, the dark, the traditional and the non-traditional. -High-quality editing. I have my own copy of Photoshop Creative Suites 3, the second-newest edition there is. I have experience in blemish removal, color enhancing (or toning down for a more vintage look), texture use, etc. -A CD of finished (and non-watermarked) images in full size for you to use in any way you’d like. Print them for friends, send them to relatives, hang them on your wall, use them as a profile picture, whatever! -No sitting fee. No fee for rescheduling due to family issues or weather. No fee for editing, adding a friend, family member, car, instrument, or pet. No fee to shoot on multiple days, in multiple locations, or multiple outfits. What can I offer? / -I am ready to do any make-up touchups for the girls, and I can offer you different accessories for pictures, like necklaces and bracelets if you’d like. -“Trash the dress” shoots (or “trash the suit/tux” for guys) with parent’s written permission. Why have your old prom or homecoming dress hang in a closet never to be worn again? Instead, we’ll take them into rivers, forests, abandoned places, to get a glam-meets-grunge style. This type of shoot has recently gained a lot of popularity, especially with brides and their wedding dresses. -If you’d like the portraits printed as something besides just a photograph and can’t find a place to do it, I’d be happy to upload the image onto one of my sites, where you can purchase them as almost anything! (Available: mugs, calendars, t-shirts, mouse-pads, coasters, magnets, puzzles, canvas prints, posters, greeting cards, postcards.) What does it cost? / Just $100, a flat rate. However, if you’re looking at traveling with us to Chicago, your own expenses are to be covered by you. I accept cash or check. If you’d like to pay via PayPal, that is also an option, though the price will be $110 due to PayPal fees. Please send me a message or comment here if you are interested.
