  • Distress - Work in Progress
    by Faizan Qureshi

    Here’s the actual piece: / ...

Here’s the actual piece: / And here’s how it’s done:

  • A little collage of work in progress. / Al Pacino drawing, graphite pencils on smooth bristol paper.

  • worked on it some more…almost done. her left eye looks funky and i will fix that :) black and white prismacolors on colored canson paper / (supposed to be jessica alba, wearing a ton of eyeshaddow)

  • finished it! / black and white prismacolor pencils on canson paper. / jessica alba photo reference

  • a work in progress… this is the first attempt at sculpting a fucked up creature and then making duplicates of them… almost finished with this creep.. just a few minor details… then i will bake him.. and make a rubber mold of him when baked… and then hopefully make resin casts of this guy from which i can paint up and have like a line of toys or figurines… if this goes well… im gonna continue doing this…

  • Thanks to Byron (barnsis) for telling me about the programme to create mosaics! I put all the stages of my Gorilla painting in the mosaic and will add more as I progress with the painting. No 7: Gorilla looks like he is wearing chainmail… poor fella! / No 8: Glazed over the ‘chainmail’ look to push back the colour and painted another layer of fur, glazed over. / No 9: A new layer of fur, this time without liquin and this is where the process slows down… now paint must dry. / N0 10: Close up of the ear region. Already the various layers are starting to resemble fur… still lots more to apply, though! / No 11. Another glaze to push back the lighter hair using shades of rust, umber and paynes grey / No 12. Another layer of fur applied, this time light grey, ultramarine blue mixed with paynes grey and raw umber I hope you find it interesting. This is where you start to fall in love with your painting… as it could take a long time to complete the fur – so the painting becomes a part of your being. If you lack the patience for the stages that follow… don’t even try it!!! The original photograph by Rocketchook

Capturing the artist at work. / This was a shot i just had to get, Steve capturing the shots that eventually became brought us Fleeting Moments on his RB profile.(Through he did have to turn around to get that exact shot) / The light was so perfect and the action and intensity of the shot demanded Steve be kept in and not cropped out Canon PowerShot A720 IS / ISO 200 / f/8.0

  • Pages From the Digital Sketchbook 1a: more Skeletor
    by Simon Sherry

Consider this an addendum to the first entry...

Consider this an addendum to the first entry in this journal series, I’ve dug up a couple of older versions of old skull-face from Masters of the Universe. The First was a ‘straight-to-photoshop’ lineart drawing, and one I’m still fond of to this day. I’ll eventually get around to colouring it at some stage, but for now, it is what it is: The second is about the sixth-stage WIP of a digital painting of Skeletor in Photoshop – more an experiment in a few techniques than a fully-realised piece. I’m posting this one to show that you can pull of the odd win from artistic failures (I’m still partial to the face and metal rendering – something I’m looking to develop further in my digital painting): Well, that’s all for MOTU for the time being. Stay tuned for the next rough-as-guts installment! Cheers / Si

The description on a t-shirt I spotted this morning reminded me how much I love seeing how an artist develops a piece of work. Scribblings on the back of napkins, beer coasters and sketchbook pages or scrawled paragraphs in notebooks are fascinating insights into how an artwork, story or image evolves. So today’s inspiration post is devoted to a look behind the scenes at our ideas and the way our works come to life. The pages of a sketchbook can become works of art themselves … ... but the behind the scenes journals, WIP posts and how to’s can help to demystify the process and can often give other artists ideas and inspiration for new ways to approach their work. The following are images from journals and descriptions on RB. / The making of Draconian Music T-Shirt by Japu / From My doodles by Natalie Perkins / From Sydney night shoot by Sara Lamond / From Drawing In Progress by Ashlee Maegan / From WIP of the Christmas Kitten by InkandBrush / Process and detail for Battersea Battle T-Shirt by RubyRed Mini Challenge: Ths week we’d like you to share a journal post showing us the process behind your art and writing. We’re not interested in the glossy perfection of finished works. We want to see how you get there! Your journal could contain: a look at how you set up a photo shoot some sketches for a new artwork photos of a work in progress a sketchbook where you collect ideas and inspiration how you made your last t-shirt design notebooks where you record ideas for your written works I have managed to acquire 3 x $20 USD RedBubble vouchers while no one was looking so the authors of the most inspiring journals tagged with ‘behind the scenes’ and uploaded between now and Friday might just get themselves some bubble bucks to splash. If you decide to take up the challenge, please also link to your journals in the comments below … Nat

  • Sheepskull showing work in progress stages.

  • This is something I’ve managed to sketch in one hour and ten minutes today whilst watching the rain on my window. and listening to Gold FM. Thinking of making it into a tutorial, as I;ve been snapping images every 5-10 minutes. Wish I knew the correct settings on my Canon 350D to take BW on the Av setting, contiously in natural light.

  • Thought you might like to see what a difference 10 mins makes! In colour too!

  • Do you ever work so intensely on a piece of art, you begin to think it’s alive! I saw someone do this 3D effect with there photos and decided to give it a try, wish I fav him.

  • OK, so far, I’ve spent 3 hours and 45 mins sketching this Collie (I must admit I strayed a little with the 3D thingy – but back on track) the area I’ve been working on is the body fur and trying to give it that Collie ruffled look, still not sure if I’m happy with it (may need some slight over rendering and and a little more cross-hatching) but I’ll wait and see when there is more done. Hope you can get an insight into me and my crazy sketching techniques.

  • Pastel Pencil on green 260g Hahnemühle Velours paper. Dedicated to the lady who keeps inspiring me to try new mediums and papers.

For those who are curious about such things, I’ve started taking pictures of my artworks as they are in progress, so one can see the stages of development. First up is “Ursa”, a mixed media piece measuring 11×15 inches. First to the drawing board (literally) for a preparatory sketch: Then I start to make the initial colorization. I generally start with the face first: Harley Cat is apparently appalled at the direction this new artwork is taking. Or he’s just very tired. Final stages: Scan of the final image: Next up is my latest piece, “Three Ravens”, which measures 25×19 inches. The initial sketch with the first bird colorized and all the “halos” painted in with gold acrylics: I used blue pastel paper to make the color on the ravens “pop” more: / Another raven comes to life: / Starting in on the background with it’s stylized wheat field: / / The final artwork: / Professional photo: / And finally a sneak peak at a new piece I started last night, called “The Serpent Tree”, which is inspired by the various world tree / tree of life myths.

  • My new project: to draw the cast of House! I am adding something of my own to each portrait. I already drew Dr. House a while back. This is Dr. Cameron (Jennifer Morrison). Thirteen (Olivia Wilde) will be next ;)
