Romance depicting heroic or marvelous deeds, pageantry, romantic exploits etc Eilean Donan castle bathing in the early afternoon light _As one of the most iconic images of Scotland, Eilean Donan is recognised all around the world. Situated on an island at the point where three great sea lochs meet, and surrounded by some majestic scenery, it is little wonder that the castle is now one of the most important attractions in the Scottish highlands. Although first inhabited around the 6th century, the first fortified castle was built in the mid 13th century and stood guard over the lands of Kintail. Since then, at least four different versions of the castle have been built and re-built as the feudal history of Scotland unfolded through the centuries. Partially destroyed in a Jacobite uprising in 1719, Eilean Donan lay in ruins for the best part of 200 years until Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap bought the island in 1911 and proceeded to restore the castle to its former glory. A major early snow storm blanketed the Cascade Mountains. A small lake nearly froze over by winter cold offers a bit of a reflection as Mt. Rainier looms in the background capped by a lenticular cloud cap. A pristine view one can linger on if you can stand the cold.

This wonderful oak tree is located in the foothills of the Tehachapi Mountains in Southern California. All the original limbs have been broken off by the snow loads of winter storms. The present limbs were regrown over the years. Photo taken during a blowing snowstorm.

I was inspired by the contrast and affect of soft, quieting snow to busy city life and its bold structures. This was mainly painted using a palette knife and heavily textured with impasto. The Icelandic Harvester. / / When I came across this old vessel moored to the pier my imagination started running wild with scenarios of what life aboard this wooden vessel would have been like. I could almost feel the sineous texture of the ropes as they hung there coated in the ice cold saltwater of the frigid North Atlantic Ocean. I could nearly hear the calls of the sailors as they shouted commands back and forth across her weather beaten decks as the waves crashed down upon her on any one of her numerous voyages. What sights must have been seen as sailors of old lined the rails to peer down at the mysteries of the sea. March 2nd, 2009 to be exact … as they say, March does come in like a lion around here!!! I don’t have the heart to tell the little darling that winter is coming again soon!!!! Taken with the Nikon D40x and the 70-300mm vr Nikon lens at 1/400 shutter and f/5.6 aperture, exp +.33, focal length 300mm and iso 400. Single handheld image duplicated 3 times in Photoshop to evals of +3, 0, -1 and -2 then processed in Photomatix Pro. By the way, everyone, fyi, there’s an update to Photomatix!!! Thank you again, Karl Williams for the info!!!!! Two textures added amid a flurry of dodging and burning and tinkering!! The Dark-Eyed Junco / “Dark-eyed Junco: Medium sparrow with considerable geographic color variation, although all exhibit a pink bill, dark eyes, white belly, dark-centered tail with white outer feathers. Short flight with white outer tail feathers flashing, alternates several rapid wing beats with wings pulled to sides. / Interesting Facts: / The Dark-eyed Junco was the most common feeder bird in North America during the 1996-1997 Project FeederWatch season. / They mainly eat insects and seeds. However, they will sometimes eat their own droppings. / A flash of white tail feathers serves as an alarm to other members of the flock. / A group of sparrows has many collective nouns, including a “crew”, “flutter”, “meinie”, “quarrel”, and “ubiquity” of sparrows.” / Thank you WhatBird.com for the info!! Best on Full Size This is Sadie, our 11-year old Samoyed, in her element. A northern breed, she’s never happier than when she’s chin deep in the cold white stuff!!! This shot was taken the day after the Washington – Baltimore area’s December ‘09 blizzard, December 20, 2009. Camera used was the Nikon D300 and the 18-200mm vr Nikon lens, UV filter attached. Shutter speed was 1/800, aperture f/14, exp. 0.00, and iso 800, white balance auto, focal length 80mm. Post work included levels and curves and slight cropping in Photoshop. “AKC MEET THE BREEDS®: Samoyed / A hardy and eager worker, the Samoyed is known for black lips that curl slightly at the corners into the “Samoyed smile.” Bright and alert, he likes to stay busy and enjoys participating in agility, herding, weight pulling, sledding, pack hiking, conformation shows and more! His heavy, weather resistant coat is suitable for very cold climates and should be pure white, white and biscuit, cream or biscuit. A Look Back / An ancient working breed, the Samoyed is very close to the primitive dog – no mixture of wolf or fox runs through the breed’s gene pool. He was developed by the Samoyede people of Siberia. They used the dogs for herding reindeer, hunting and hauling sledges as well as guard work.
