I’m fascinated by this tree which grows in Lafayette, Louisiana. I think it must have fallen after a storm and then started growing again because the base of its trunk is very misshappen and convoluted as though it had been twisted and torn at one time. I stumbled across this quotation by Winston Churchill and immediately thought about this lone live oak. I think the words of the statesman and this stately old tree go well together. It’s encouragement for those who consider themselves loners because, as Churchill pointed out, solitary trees, having overcome the adversities of loneliness, grow stronger as a result.

The sound of Churchill’s voice will echo in iconography of Great Britain for a long time. Although well before my time, it’s one of the first things I think of from London, its fierce survival in war time.

He returned as Minister of Munitions, Secretary of State for War and Secretary of State for Air. In the interwar years, he served as Chancellor of the Exchequer in the Conservative government. After the outbreak of the Second World War, Churchill was again appointed First Lord of the Admiralty. Following the resignation of Neville Chamberlain on 10 May 1940, he became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and led Britain to victory against the Axis powers.] Churchill was always noted for his speeches, which became a great inspiration to the British people and embattled Allied forces. After losing the 1945 election, he became Leader of the Opposition. In 1951, he again became Prime Minister before finally retiring in 1955. While out photographing foxes I often encounter people walking their dogs. While the foxes run for cover I take the opportunity to grab a few shots of the pooches. This British bulldog goes by the name of Winston.
