Inside the “Riddling Hall” at Domaine Chandon, Yarra Valley – Vic. / Riddling is the method used by hand to rotate each sparkling wine bottle – a quater turn at a time – to gradually slide the yeast lees (decomposing yeast cells) into the bottle neck, ready to be disgorged, dosaged & sealed with either a traditional cork or the modern equivalent – a crown seal. The job is called riddling and the person who does the job is “The Riddler”. Insert Batman jokes here ….. DOMAINE CHANDON is open daily for wine tastings, and guided tours are conducted three times per day at 11am, 1pm, and 3pm. Do yourself a favour and try their Sparkling Pinot Noir Shiraz! Bergerac is the largest town in the Périgord Pourpre département, an area that derives its name from the purple grapes that grow in the region’s 125 sq km of vineyards. The most famous wines are the sweet whites produced around Monbazillac. On the plains of the Dordogne, Bergerac is a modern town with scattered remnants from its interesting and violent past. In the 16th century it was a Protestant stronghold and it endured much damage during that period. The old city and harbour retain their charm, however, making Bergerac a good and interesting place to visit.

Sunset silhouette of bronze statues of Stallions Rampant at Rymill Coonawarra Winery. The two magnificent bronze stallions rampant, created by the noted sculptor Gabriel Sterk, welcome visitors to the Rymill Coonawarra Winery. Such horses have long been important to the Rymill family, and were an integral part of their business for a number of generations. Coonawarra’s terra rossa soil, with its high calcium content, raised horses with strong bones and powerful constitutions long before it became famous for the excellence of its vineyards and wines. Gabriel Sterk’s life and career have alternated between Europe and Australia. Born in Holland in 1942, he emigrated to Adelaide with his family in 1958, but his developing career and talent soon drew him back to the art treasures of Europe; first of all to Italy, and then to the Royal Academy in Holland. He now lives in France, where he sculpted the original of the stallions rampant in clay, prior to their being cast in bronze at a foundry in Holland, and then shipped to Australia where they now stand proudly before the winery, evoking the past and eliciting the future. Entry for the Winery Photo & Description of Your Favourite Wine Challenge Last week in the 40 degree heat, we visited Boynton’s Feathertop Winery on the Great Alpine Road in Porepunkah, Vic. Winery Description / Established in 1989 by Kel Boynton, Feathertop remains a family owned business. / Their wines capture the essences of nature and the beauty and crispness of the Alpine Valleys. / The name Feathertop is derived from Mount Feathertop which is the commanding feature in the region, Alpine Valleys. / The mountain shelters the valley and influences the air currents. It has defined the soil structure in which the grapes are grown and provides fresh Alpine spring water for the vines. / In 2005 they started a wine club, and have only recently named it ‘Summit Cru’. Summit referring to the pinnacle of Mount Feathertop and the quintessence of their wines, and Cru “the best of the vintage”. Cru, as in crew, also carries a double meaning as Kel (the winemaker) has a rowing history. / ...and after tasting their selection ~ we joined Summit Cru ! Favourite Wine / My pick on the day was the 2006 Feathertop Merlot. Not normally a favourite for me, as I usually like fuller bodied wines, I was really surprised with this wine. With a lovely plummy nose and a wonderful berry finish, it was a sure winner for me. / But I am looking forward to when my wine club case comes, there is a $70 reserve Shiraz in there which I haven’t tasted yet!! Photograph Details / Canon 40D w/ EF-S 10-22mm / Hand held @ 10mm / ISO: 100 / Shutter: 1/100 sec / Aperture: f/5.0 / UV & CP filters / Mount Buffalo in the distance overlooking the vineyard. / Google location Map / Some information referenced from Boyntons Winery Website I appreciate you taking time to view my work, and I really enjoy reading your comments. / Thanks for visiting :-) Other Boynton winery photos from autumn
