When I did the Foothills Fall Festival back in October of 07, that in itself was an honor to me. To be the event photog, and be responsible for capturing the moments of the events, everything from the arts and crafts, to the kids, to the finale` of the concerts. The woman in charge of the event contacted me literally Two days before the submission deadline to pick out my favorite shot, to enter into the Kaleidoscope Awards. Something I have NO clue of what it is all about. I had only 3199 shots to choose from. I do know it’s a national event for festivals around this area, and that is about it. / So after careful concideration, I chose a shot. Wasnt really expecting much, of course had the hope something would come of it, but with so many other festivals going on..who knows what would happen. Yesterday I get an email from her, with the PDF file, showing what was going to be printed in one of our local newspapers, and yes..it was on the Front Page :):) / This is the link to the paper Maryville’s Foothill Fall Festival named best in Southeast If you read down alittle ways, you will see where I won the Bronze Award for “Best Event Photograph” :):) It hasnt really sunk in yet, dont know what I will get from it, a plague, certificate, dont know yet…lol And yes, I want something Solid, showing what it’s all about! / This is the shot I chose. / / It’s here on RB, called “still loved by the fans”. The reason I chose this shot, is because of the “tells a story”, you have a celebrity, totally involved with his fans, his fan’s looking onward admiring him, him holding his fan’s hands..and something about that look in his eyes. For me ..shows total and complete happiness!! Another reason I chose this, was because of the tech’s on it. My shooting conditions were a challenge for even the most seasoned photog, concert was at night. The only light I had to work with was the lights coming off stage, into my face. So I had to really think out what might happen, and hope when it did, I had the lighting working for me. The way the focus turned out concidering my lighting conditions, I was shooting at a fairly high SS mode for the conditions for lighting. / I am in heaven right now, this is something I never expected, but just hoped for. / Im just hoping they allow me the honor to shoot this year’s festival for them. I had a blast, and have already thought of a few things I would add to what I had already done! / I am so hyped by this, every now and then, it will hit me that I won the Bronze Award (which is A OK with me). Other then that, it hasnt quite sunk in yet….lol / I dont want anyone to pinch me, because I dont want to wake up from this dream :)

I actually won a competition I entered…YAY Lake Macquarie City Council held a photographic competition entitled “Our Coast, Our Stories”. I entered 3 pictures and won 2 prizes. There were 3 judges who had about 120yrs of photographic experience between them so I was really chuffed to think that they liked my pictures. I came second in the “People on the Coast” section with this image of Redhead Beach and I won the “Monochrome” section with this one I got 400 6×4 prints an 8×10 print 2 certificates and a photographic book of coastal marine life. The pictures now go on tour throughout the region being displayed in libraries. There were pictures taken for the paper and websites and a tv crew also turned up and filmed the winning pics. The upcoming 51st Grenfell Henry Lawson Festival of Arts will be held Thursday 5th June to Monday 9th June, 2008. Some good news on a personal level is that my image Dog Rocks has been judged the Best Photograph Of The Exhibition in the photography competition. The award to be presented is a bronze statuette which has been sculptured by Michael Mandelc, and it depicts Henry Lawson’s “The Drover’s Wife”. Dog Rocks also won the Open Colour section of the competition. I’ve been kindly invited by Tim Wood, coordinator of the photography competition, to attend the Awards Dinner at Grenfell on Saturday 7 June, 2008 6:30PM to receive the award. There is a distinct connection with Redbubble regarding this achievement. Hop Dac, RB staff member, posted a topic in the main forum informing members of this competition. It was there I became aware of the competition, and I thank Hop for doing so. Upon deciding to enter, I ordered six Redbubble matted prints specifically for the competition. I wrote a journal regarding the quality of the matted prints on April 19, 2008 and it can be found here. I’m pleased to say that Redbubble and its community have played a significant role regarding this achievement and I highly value the continued encouragement given by Peter Styles, Redbubble staff and Redbubble members. The achievement is dedicated to my mate Joe Mortelliti, for it was because of him that Dog Rocks was photographed on August 25, 2007. Special thanks to my family for their continued support. Folks, enjoy your creative pursuits here at Redbubble and beyond. Cheers, / Darren. Drum roll please, / having a little fun here tonight…...champagne in hand….. I have decided that after facing down some negativity of late, and a few personal hardships, maybe the universe is now smiling and rewarding me for my continual “belief” and for holding onto the “stuff” I dream of. It has been a rewarding month for me, so far as my art is concerned…. My images have been honoured by Features in various groups…. / THANK YOU to the / “All Things Ancient Egyptian” group, / the “Dolphins and Whales” group, / “The Healing Journey” group and the / “Abstract Digital Art and Writing Group”...... for the features…... “The Line of Bast” was featured in All things Ancient Egyptian “Exhilarate!” was featured in the group Dolphins & Whales “Believe” was featured in the group The Healing Journey “Kylee” was featured in the group All things Ancient Egyptian “I Had A Dream” was featured in the group The Healing Journey “Trinity” was featured in the group ABSTRACT DIGITAL ART AND WRITING On a grander note, the opening of the new ArtGeo gallery in Busselton was celebrated this month, with the “SIGNATURE SOUTH WEST” exhibition, and a first prize of $10,000. And now, tonight was the Awards Night for this year’s Annual Busselton Photography contest, run by our Chamber of Commerce. Three talented professional photographers – Christian Fletcher, Roger Clark and Derek Poole were the judges and I was thrilled to come home with a First Prize (Digital Art) and a Highly Commended for two of my images that made it to the finals. In a recent Redbubble Journal entitled “Art – What’s the Point – Peter posed the question – “why do we create art?” I have really had to think about this over the past few weeks. Being an artist or should I say, a creative person, is like another dimension overlaid upon our humanity, that ripples and moves with us in everything we do….. it is like magnifying glass through which we see ourselves, the world and our place in it. It is an intangible element to the core essence of who we are, and lays dormant in some, and explodes with passion in others, while for many it simmers just beneath the surface and becomes visible in many other ways. / / I liken creativity to our spirituality – we all have the seed of our faith or spirit in our very cells, we carry the questions, the desire, the awareness, and the potential within us, but we are all unique and have different views and ideologies, and infinite ways of expressing these perspectives. Eventually we all arrive at different facets of a greater truth, (like sitting in our own seats at one grand table). / And most importantly, we should never be made to conform to anyone else’s viewpoint, expectations, medium or belief system, or compromise our own to suit another. So, this to me, describes both spirituality and art. Both are the most personal and unique expressions of who we are. What you express as art, reveals your soul. Enough of my philosophies! My reasons for reflecting thus is because this was all brought home to me recently as the rollercoaster of life and art continued. I recently had to retrieve my work from a major city art gallery where they have had a Christmas exhibition, and had invited me to enter six pieces of art back in November. I had also entered another piece in an upcoming major art exhibition (next month) but this piece had been “declined”. The six pieces had not sold, but that did not surprise me, as they were way overpriced. I say this, shaking my head as I really don’t know what else to do ….. by the time I add up the cost of printing and framing and then add the gallery’s one third commission, there was no room for anything for “the artist”. However, once the gallery took my work, they then added on a further amount to the price to cover their own GST should it sell. That pushed the artworks way beyond their value, and made them unsaleable. (IMHO). It was really sad to go in and pick up the seven pieces of art, and find out that of the work I had prepared and framed especially for them, some had not even been unwrapped and hung over the two months of the exhibition. I was really upset as it seemed like a bit of a smack in the face, a waste of time, money and energy, and a statement about a less than favourable opinion of my work. A gallery attendant who assisted me said of my most popular piece here on RB “Forgiveness” / / “Maybe it was declined because of its religious connotations” !!! (Huh??) I have to confess, I was tired and shed quite a few tears going home with my car stacked full of “my unwanted art”. It really made me feel “less” and I questioned whether I was making a big mistake in believing in myself enough to put my art in public galleries.. On top of that, I had a bad experience with the people I had used to print my large canvases. I had opted to spend locally, and when I took my files in to be printed, was assured that their print methods were top quality, the examples I saw LOOKED good, and I was told that by paying a little extra, they could also seal the canvases with a product used by a certain well know local artist. (which I did). Upon receiving the canvas prints, my initial reaction was “wow! These look fabulous!” and so I took them to the framer to get them ready for the abovementioned exhibitions; my framer is a professional I have used for five years and trust completely. When I returned to collect them, he informed me to never have my canvases printed at “that place” again and in dismay I saw why – everywhere he had held the canvas to stretch it around the frame, the ink had rubbed right off the canvas, leaving what appeared to be white finger prints around the edges of several of the canvases. This left my work looking shoddy and not suitable for a professional exhibition, and after spending close to a thousand dollars with this firm, I was devastated. (I emailed the company and explained what had happened, expressed my dismay, and they did not bother replying) BUT….. I had to remind myself to “believe”. Being in such a community as Redbubble certainly buoys my spirits and my belief in art for art’s sake and ART for MY SAKE…..and the importance of expressing myself though a creative endeavour, regardless of what other’s opinions are or how my work is perceived. I knew I had to let all the above “go”….. Sure enough the wheel turned and the following experience certainly erased any negative fallout I had been carrying from my experience with the city gallery or the shonky printers. I recently went to a reptile park in a neighbouring town. I got talking to the young woman there about the snakes I had seen after the fires on our farmland….and when she asked more questions about where she could see a photo, I wrote down my name and redbubble’s website so she could see the photos from the fire. When she saw my name, she exclaimed “OH my God! Are YOU Wendy Slee? My Mum and I go to the art gallery all the time to see your work! You are my favourite artist! I just love your work!” Can you imagine how I felt hearing something like this! I had tears in my eyes and did not know what to say or do….suffice to say, it overwhelmed me that a stranger knew of my work and felt this way. I went home feeling like I had won a first prize in an art comp, or received a million dollars for a piece of my art! What had just happened to me meant more than money! / The story did not quite end there as the next day, the owner of the park phoned me and asked “are you the lady who was down here yesterday, who is an artist?” And she went on to explain that she had been “eavesdropping” from her office, and that she and her husband had been seeking to buy a special gift to repay the young woman who worked for them, and could not think of anything better than a piece of my art! And so between us we worked out which was the favourite, and I delivered it to them, so they could present her with it as a token of their appreciation for her dedication at their reptile park. It was the most beautiful thing for me to be a party to. The young woman was thrilled – we had managed to get her favourite piece – “The Horses – / / and there were hugs and tears all round. Again, I felt like a million dollars. And to top it off, this week the Conscious Living magazine came out across Australia featuring my artwork on the cover and on a second article inside! / So I guess it just goes to show, you win some, you lose some, life may hand out some crappy times, but if you believe in yourself (and what you create), good things will happen…. I hope your art does this for you too. Believe it!

This evening was the opening night of the Bacchus Marsh Rotary Club Art Show and Sale which is held every year over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. This year’s event had an additional category, for photographs (although I have entered in the general media section for a few years and won a commended prize a couple of years ago). But this year, I won first prize in the photography section with my image In Another World. It’s the first time I’ve ever won an event in an art show, more specifically this one in my home town. There were almost 800 works of art in the show overall (although not sure how many in my category but a lot more photographs than in the past). It is such a huge honour for me and the feedback I’m getting from the local community even after only a few hours has been so wonderful. Here’s the image in question. / And here’s one of me at the show looking pretty flushed and stressed (as I do in large crowds) but still very excited. / A very big thank you to my Redbubble friends for their support, to Keryl who suggested this photo project in the first place, to my friends Sarah and Ana who encourage me and support my artistic endeavours, and Redbubble for providing me with the opportunity to reconnect with the creativity within. / xxx / (the prize money is wonderful and very much needed … now, fingers crossed that someone will buy my image)

I just had to share my excitement and joy, although I do not generally like to appear to ‘show off’!! Some time ago I submitted an image to the readers challenge in the super magazine, ‘Photoshop Creative’, and to my joy, I have just received an Email from them saying that I have won!!!! I had to use their start image of a church, and I adapted an image that I have here in my gallery, – ‘The Witching Hour’. It’s been a great week for me in the creative …
It’s been a great week for me in the creative world, a wonderful antidote for some of the stuff happening in other parts of my world…...... / I would like to share some good news with you…... the annual Busselton Through My Lens Photo Competition has just been finalized for the year. It’s a great comp that draws in many people of all ages and both professional and amateur. This year saw over 200 entries go in, with many being displayed in the three main shopping centres for several weeks in October. In the past, I have done well in the Professional Digital Art section, and although I had been under pressure this year with my exhibition, and therefore “rushed” my entries at the last minute, I still hoped I would do okay (plus the cash prizes are really really attractive and what can I say – you know what we struggling artists are like!!). I am blown away!! I won the Digital Art Professional section, AND just when I thought the excitement was too much (and was spilling my wine because I forgot you don’t clap hands while holding a loaded glass – sheesh! LOL) I received the first prize in the Professional photography section (something I thought I could only ASPIRE to especially as I never enter the professional section, except this year the judges shifted my work into the pro class without telling me) with my image of David Dann of the Noyt Kobori Spirit Dancers. I want to thank David for giving me permission to exhibit his portrait, it took a bit of time and a lot of “serendipity” to find David after him being an anonymous face in my photo for so long, and just add that it is really interesting to note – I shared my recent exhibition with well known aboriginal artist Troy Bennell, and have only since realized that when photographing the Noyt Kobori Spirit Dancers, this is actually Troy’s group and he was in many of my images playing the didgeridoo. Between us, we have come up with several ideas and I now look forward to doing more work with the guys and hope to capture a little more of their culture and “magic” for the future. Which to my mind, is as much an honour and a “win” as those mentioned above!

Dear Friends, I wanted to share with you, my wonderful week. First of all I was invited to be a host in the fabulous Photo Manipulators Group. This was such an honour and I am loving every minute of it. I get to see all the great new art as it is posted, which is terrific, and making lots of great new friends in the process. Then I sold an A2 Canvas of Dover Castle (for real money) as a result of the exhibition I had at Quex Barn. Today – I bought my copy of the magazine – Photoshop Creative and was flicking through, only to find a full page feature of images from my gallery. THEN – turning over, discovered that I had won their Readers Challenge, with my image The Rescue None of this would ever have happened, without the confidence I have gained from all your wonderful support and encouragement. / Thank you all from my heart. xx / Anna
