  • Life… / As nature intended… / to wither and die / or / to fight and survive…. Just as a flower, / Some buds wither and die… / Some begin to open…only to be crushed by the elements… / But there are always some, they take the knocks… / suffer the elements… / embrace the light and… / Grow stronger… / Then one day… / the blossom opens… / bathes in that light…and emerges… / full of beauty and strength…. / That’s Life….. Thanks B., for the enlightenment….. Camelia flower captured in my garden today…06-07-2008

But thanks to John Robb who loaned me this 50mm 1.4 where there were lots of flowers, I looked for one that was dying. • Sometimes I’m amazed by how such a simple subject can turn out into such a beautiful image. So initially when the leaf dropped into the water, I wanted to capture the ripples in the water, but then the water turned so silky smooth and I just had to fire away. Probably best viewed in large format.

  • This display of gerberas was shot at a stall the Royal Melbourne Show in 2006. They were in an eye-catching vertical display and members of the public could help themselves to a bloom. I shot this not just because of the variety of colours, but because I wanted to portray the distinction between the freshest specimens and those that had started wilting. I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F6.7, 1/125 sec, ISO 400, focal length 45mm. 47-9353
