I went down to Wilsons Prom for two days over the Melbourne Cup long weekend and got a few nice pix. This particular trip for me was unique due to the fact that 140mm of rain fell the day I arrived causing many usually dry creeks to flow vigorously. I left for Waterloo Bay from Telegraph saddle at 9:00pm in the rain optomistically hoping for a spectacular return of Sol. Arriving after midnight the spectacular sunrise and many new creeks did not disappoint. As is the case with many of my shots there is a considerable time gap between finding a good location for an image and shooting it. I found this spot in March 2007 on an overcast day completely unsuitable for photography. I finally returned in November 2007 to capture the shot I had envisaged all those months before. On this occassion the light surpassed my expectations with the results being worth the wait. Taken on Pillar Point at Wilsons Promontory. Taken the same evening as Little Oberon Sunset. An amazing evening in an amazing place. It was so dull and overcast at one stage I thought I’d set up my tent and cook my dinner before it got dark rather than spend it on the nearby knoll the light seemed so uninspiring. Glad I didn’t. I had no idea how many of these huts there are scattered around the Mornington Peninsula, it seems that they are everywhere! Really been trying to stay away from HDR lately I will put 3 exposures in Photomatix, tone map it, look at it, then scrap it and go back to Lightroom 2…so this is not a HDR image although it does have a little bit of that feel to it. This is the last photo for a while that I can remember being taken without a tripod! Was taken a little later in the morning than my last few uploads to RB. / Settings Canon 40D, 17-85mm IS. My first real attempt at some star trails, I thought the South Celestial Pole would be a bit further up in the image but it ended up being just out but I think I still like this one. This tree is the same tree in my image Speed of Light. This technique will definitely require some more practice, the tree is lit from car headlights coming off Lysterfield Road in the distance. Whilst standing up here this evening I had to ask myself.. is this the safe thing to do? But then I thought, if we never took risks then that would be a boring way to live. This one was taken from the same spot as a couple of my other Portsea images but at a different time and day. My original intention was to get a good sunset around the eastern side of the London Bridge but the tide was a lot higher than I expected so I climbed back up to this spot instead and it was definitely worth it :) I had to put the ISO up a fair bit to keep the exposure time down as it was almost dark. Luckily I can get away with it with this camera, the picture would be a lot grainier had I used my 40D. The London Bridge is located on the ocean side of Portsea in the Mornington Peninsula National Park, Victoria, Australia. It’s only a short walk down to this spot from the car park. / Settings Canon 5D, 17-40mm f4 L USM.
