A little while ago I promised I’d have some more news on our calendar dreaming soon – We’re not 100% there yet, still fiddling around with the final printing stock, size, ordering hanger material etc BUT it’s really close … I’ve made some calendars that everyone I show them to like, including some real life users ! So there’s good news, bad news and we need your help. / / The Good: We are looking at a 13 page, A3 sized 300 GSM calendar, wire bound for about $18USD ($20AUD) – Plus a dash of postage. They feel heavy and look nice. The Bad: Christmas is coming and we have too much to do – But, if there is enough demand “we’ll” ( read Justin ) will try and find a way to squeeze them in somehow. The Help: So what I’d ask you guys to do is help us by answering a couple of questions (in the comments or via BubbleMail to me is fine) 1) How many calendars as described above would you buy of your own work to sell or give away ? / 2) How many calendars would you buy from other artists to keep or give as gifts if they were available ? / 3) How many ‘best of RedBubble category’ style calendars would you buy if they were available ? / 4) What’s of most interest – 1, 2 or 3. Ultimately I think we will do 1, 2 and 3 – But for this year we might have to compromise and I want to make sure we make the right choice to keep as many of you guys happy as we can ! James

  • Australia to join China, Burma and Saudi Arabia in censoring Internet

In case you hadn’t heard, Stephen Conroy (ALP’s minister for broadband) is proposing mandatory filtering of the Internet by all Australian ISPs, to ensure that children do not see “online pornography” or other “inappropriate content”. If you don’t want your internet feed filtered, then users will need to opt out of the “service”. Read more about it here / A few questions for us all to consider if this goes ahead unopposed: Who will decide what is “pornography” and “inappropriate content”? How will we know what is on the list? If a site contains one piece of “inappropriate content” will the whole site be filtered? If a site is incorrectly put on the filter list – what is the appeals process? Why has this become an opt-out system when it was clearly stated that it would be an opt-in system before the election? Will this really stop children seeing inappropriate content? or will it make parents lazy? How will this filter (aka censorship) affect the speed of the internet? How will the government guard against mis-use of this filter? How long before this morphs into George Orwell’s “Ministry of Truth”? While no-one is advocating that children be exposed to unsuitable material, this scheme is highly impractical and won’t work anywhere near 100%. / In addition, the costs of such a system will be high and will undoubtedly be passed on to the consumer… Welcome to the Nanny State! I would urge people to protest against this scheme at every opportunity… / If you’re on Facebook, then you can join this group

Throw enough mud and some of it will stick. A mantra of sorts that I live by. My art is not for everyone, or even for most people. Sometimes it offends, shocks, upsets, arouses, inspires or invades the senses. I don’t consider that a flaw. I consider that an achievement. And I’ll put it all out there and see what happens. It sounds tacky but if it reaches only one person in a hundred, I’ve succeeded. I don’t care what the other ninety-nine people think about it. I just don’t. My concentration is fixed squarely on the person who ‘gets it.’ I’m happy to keep making art for that one person if it means I get to create the ideas and images in my head. To do anything else would be to sell myself short. If you are offended. Good.

For me, 2008 has been a year of extreme highs and lows. / The lows relate to the illness my Dad suffered, and his passing in September. / The highs due to the awesome people I’ve met,and had the good fortune to call my friends, and the journey I have discovered in my photography. Lots of love, and best wishes to all…lets make next year a great one:)))

I knew times were tough but why this. My good friend Peter Brook II took his own life yesterday January 11, 2009 at 12:30 PM. Dam it you gave us no clues, how could you do this to us. He is the reason my daughter was able to get into cheerleading. We just talked last week and he was suppose to come by Monday or Tuesday night and pick up a computer I was working on for him. Nancy called him up to invite him to dinner last night but it was already too late. This is the first friend I have lost this way. We called each other brothers, man does this hurt. I will always ask what more could I have done. I will always wonder what if. So if I don’t comment on your work for the next couple of days, I’m not ignoring you. I’m just hurting and having a real tough time losing a good friend. Your friend / Troy W. Smith

7 pounds. Haven’t heard that much that makes me want to see it, but that’s never been an impediment to going to a premiere before. So, stool in tow for added elevation (with Will Smith expected, crowds would no doubt be big) I headed over to Leicester Square. It wasn’t an easy premiere, and stars Rosario Dawson and Woody Harrelson didn’t attend. But when Will Smith is in the place, it’s always a party. The guy is a champ. / There were rumours a big star was going to make an appearance in Leicester Square, and my money was on it being Philip Seymour Hoffman. Call it a hunch… / “Umm…Georgia? I’m not so sure that’s Sean Penn” / Will Smith! Woo! Never has a star been so eager to sign autographs, pose for photos, do multiple circuits of the fans around the place, and even use breaks in interviews to head to the crowds yet again. He was even desperate to repay the five dollars he owed me. (I just didn’t have change for a hundred. Next time, Will…) / Reporters familiarising themselves with the photosheet of expected celebs. I seriously, seriously need to get myself a sheet like that so I know who half these people are. / Will Smith will brook no criticism of the movie Independence Day. And I agree… excellent film. / ?? I’m going to go with Emmanuelle Beart because Beart is pretty and so is this lady. The reasoning is tenuous, sure, but it’s all I have. / “It’s hard to say. It’s either some crazy caterpillar or something that came from the cornrows in my hair extensions. But let’s go on with the interview” / It’s … it’s…. no idea. Hand me that piece of paper, please. / Director Garbriele Muccino also did ‘The Pursuit of Happyness’ with Will Smith. I didn’t watch that film, and may not watch this film, but it’s nothing personal, man! / Model Danielle Lloyd. Woohoo! I actually recognised a celebrity!! (I had to check online to get her name, though…) / “Wait. Did that guy just ask me to sign his STOOL??” / Umm…no, wasn’t me. I needed it to stand on. / “Nope, haven’t seen him… here, have an autograph anyway!” / Will Smith just promised everyone a cheeseburger to fight off the cold, and Gabriele Muccino just explained how much that stands to cost him. / Will Smith meets Yellow Cap Guy. Words can’t describe The Awesome. That one was enjoyable, albeit cold and crowded. And while I was having trouble staying balanced while the crowd surged around me and my stool, I did get official police validation that my stool was authorised to be in the area. Next up? Possibly ‘Revolutionary Road’ on the weekend. ‘Valkyrie’ is next week, but that one is supposedly BIG where this one was only Average, and certainly crowded enough already. We shall see! Here’s the collection: / Defiance – Craig! Liev! .. the other guy! / Australia – Kidman! Jackman! Luhrman! / Yes Man – Carrey! Deschanel! / Madagascar2 – Rock! Stiller! Pinkett-Smith! / A Bunch of Amateurs- Royal Screening – HRH represents!! / Quantum of Solace – Everyone! Often blurry! / How to Lose Friends and Alienate People – Pegg! Ummm….Serkiss?! / Tropic Thunder – Stiller! Downey Jnr! Black! / Righteous Kill – De Niro! Pacino! 50Cent! Kickass / RockNRolla – Ritchie! Butler! Newton! Madonna shows up! / The X-Files : I Want to Believe – Anderson! Duchovny! Carter! / The Dark Knight – Bale! Caine! Eckhart! Gyllenhall! All kind of! / Wall-E – Weaver! Burtt! The Robot! / Hancock – Charlize Theron. Will Smith. Enough Said.

I have a confession.. I used to fall asleep with my laptop on my belly sometimes.. with some inane News program on.. (Not you Keith Oberman nor you Rache Maddowl … ) or a series I get for free on NBC or ABC.. / . / I went to my Mac Store to fix my Iphone and asked the Genius.. Why does my laptop battery get so hot? He says.. “do you have your computer in your sheets?” (wow my sheets did he say, not bed nor blanket..did he say sheets and how the hell did he know that is exactly where my lap top is if not on my belly ..?) “Well yes” I said “infact I do.” He told me that is a big no no. Flat surface for sure miss that is what you need he told me, and so I intended that evening to get a breakfast like tray or something to put it on, but I thought tomorrow, tomorrow I will find just the right thing for my computer for my evening ritual (ugly habit). / . / My great desire as of late, actually for the past well,,, uhmm 2 months is that I stop this ritual (U.H.) and go to bed with a good book or read some of my stuff i am developing to teach. I mean this has been a great desire of mine. I do have a powerful desire factor but sometimes due to my old story lines..(I have some addiction tendencies perhaps) I seem to put off what actions will truly serve me till I am up against the wall.. or as my mother used to say.. “Lina, why must you go to the depths of hell before you realize what you really should be doing?” aww mom.. I don’t know.. really? do I do that? hummmm.. and off I would go finding another storyline that would indeed beat me all to hell. But note .. I think I liked it like that then. / Now.. nope.. I want a new story line. That of health, wealth and well Being. / . / Here is the kicker. I came home after finding out about the poor treatment of my computer and battery and did it again.. fell asleep with the computer on some inane show.. crappy sleep … woke up.. hot hot battery (3:00am) pulled the battery out of computer and passed out again. .. more shit sleep. / Next morning, yesterday I woke up and found the battery died or I am thinking fried. Now what is funny is I have been doing this forever. But because of my great desire for change and the fact that I did indeed focus on ‘battery’ yesterday, funny how that worked. I have Apple Care and will fix the battery, but I am giving myself 3 weeks to go back. They say developing a good habit takes at least that time to occur. And here is the Secret / I created that whole thing just for ME!!! / Last night I slept like a baby.. and you know what? I FEEL SO DAMN GOOD! Love this Law Of Attraction, Yep… I Did That! xox / Linaji

Hi ya all (smile) This message is to let you all know that I’ll be away from RedBubble starting later today 21st June 2009 and won’t be back for sure until the 2nd of July 2009 …. I have family business to take care of and sadly I probably won’t have any or very little access to a computer during that time. I am shutting down host activities for my two groups – Creative Cards and All Untitled . I have two guardian angels keeping an eye on them until I return. My trip is quite unexpected and unavoidable. We had a death in the family. To top it off we will be on a bus 21 hours one way…. promise to take photos and lots of them …. I’ll miss you all and will probably be going through RB withdrawals but I think I can handle that since it’s only temporary (smile) In the meantime have a fabulous week and all the fun you can handle … be back as soon as I can (big smile) owlspook / 090620

Today the headlines scream that Michael was murdered. (sigh.) / I always thought he was killed, but not in the everyday sense of the word “murder”. Is there such a thing as “legal murder” – maybe we need to think about this and at a deeper level, question why he died. And for that matter, Heath Ledger, and the list of others before them. Every day, ordinary people die from drug related causes and the media publish and condemn the use of illicit substances and the law comes down on those who deal in them. Those who die pass anonymously from this planet and remain only a statistic—their lives and deaths forgotten. When someone famous dies from drug overdoses or drug use, they make the headlines and the stories reignite and the lawmakers and media get their pens ready to wield their power. / . / But WHEN will the media and our governments pick up on the fact that we have had a series of very famous people who die from the use of the supposed “good drugs”...the pharmaceutical sweets dispensed freely by the medical profession all across the planet. Isn’t it time we questioned what the hell is going on with the drug companies, the medical profession AND the weak governments that bow down and make laws that allow them to have such power. Isn’t it time we took control over what gets put into our bodies? Isn’t it time we took a look at just which drugs are doing more harm to our bodies, insidiously sitting in our bathroom cupboards and slowly taking their toll on humanity while the “legal” drug dealers get fat and rich????? / Heath died, Elvis died, Michael died, just to name a few…....isn’t it about time to ask REAL questions?

Do not covet your ideas! You will remember from school other students preventing you from from seeing their answers by placing their arm around their exercising book or exam paper. It’s the same at work, people are secretive with their ideas. “Don’t tell them that, they’ll take the credit for it”. The problem with hoarding is you end up living off your reserves. Eventually you beacome stale. If you give away everything you have, you are left with nothing. This forces you to look, to be aware, to replenish. Somehow the more you give away, the more comes back to you. Ideas are open knowledge, don’t claim ownership. They’re not your ideas anyway, the’re someone else’s. They are out there floating by on the ether. You just have to put yourself in a frame of mind to pick them up. Given my own experiences with vaccinations and all I have learned over the years (my daughter got brain damage from her immunisations as a baby…..and we continue to deal with the consequences every day of our lives…...) you might understand my interest and concern in the following. / I thought I would post this article in it’s entirety for anyone who shares my concerns….especially in the thought that such vaccinations might become mandatory. / (taken from the AVN media release site this morning) (and here a most interesting link provided by Linaji…......with more information ) Swine Flu - / Why the media needs to ask more questions Sunday, July 26th, 2009 – For Immediate Release: Swine Flu Fact Sheet: / The only way to conquer fear is with information Governments around the world are scrambling to find a solution to the potential problems that may be caused by the current H1N1 ‘swine flu’ pandemic. From its origins in Mexico in April of this year, the panic caused by this virus – a hybrid of viral DNA from pigs, birds and humans – has grown to the point where logic and science have been forgotten in a mad race to do ‘something’ about this situation. There is an adage that states, those who forget the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them. In an effort to keep us from making the same mistakes we have in the past – mistakes which have been extremely costly in terms of financial burden and lives lost or health damaged – the Australian Vaccination Network has tried to gather together information to help you to ask the questions you need to find answers to and the knowledge necessary to make intelligent decisions about the swine flu vaccine. It is also an excellent idea to download the flyer from Pandemic Flu online. This web site is a great resource of constantly updated information on this topic. History: / Between 1918 and 1920, immediately after World War I, it is estimated that as many as 50 million people around the world may have died from Swine Flu. Most of those whose deaths were attributed to influenza – 95% and more – did not die from the flu but were victims of bacterial pneumonia – an easily treatable illness for which antibiotics are very effective.(1) Had this outbreak occurred today rather than almost 100 years ago, the mortality and morbidity statistics would have been very different. In addition, the strain of flu which was in circulation at that time was completely different to the strain we are seeing now. In 1976, a soldier at Fort Dix NJ (USA), Private Lewis, left his sick bed to go on a forced march – and collapsed and died from what was diagnosed at the time as swine flu. Initially, it was thought that up to 500 other soldiers at Fort Dix had also contracted the disease. That figure was revised down to 4 confirmed cases with no other deaths. In fact, there were no other cases reported anywhere else in the world.(2) Only one person died of swine flu in 1976, but more than 4,000 were seriously injured by the vaccine with 25 confirmed deaths. That vaccine, like the current shot, was rushed through without proper testing. The result was more than $3.5 billion in compensation claims in the US – and this is for a vaccination campaign which was cut short only 10 weeks after it started which was meant to protect against an outbreak which never occurred. The only outcome to this vaccination campaign was a large number of permanently injured citizens and an enduring distrust of influenza vaccinations.(3,4) The story today / Prior to April of this year, nobody had heard of the H1N1 swine flu. Having gone through several scares over the past decade with other influenza viruses which were claimed to have the potential to kill or seriously injure millions around the world (SARS and Avian Influenza), the world’s populations could have been excused for greeting this new outbreak with more then a touch of scepticism. In fact, if there is a pandemic of this virus, it is very possible – some think even likely – that it is a man-made pandemic. Australian researcher, Adrian Gibbs, one of the researchers who created the influenza drug, Tamiflu, has stated that his investigations have indicated that this is a laboratory-created virus which has escaped into the population.(5) This hypothesis is of interest since the initial outbreak in Mexico City started in close proximity to Baxter Labs’ vaccine facility.(6) Baxter is now infamous for shipping batches of human influenza vaccines which had been contaminated with live Avian influenza (bird flu) virus to 18 European countries.(7) It was only due to the excellent due diligence of a lab in the Czech republic that this contamination was discovered prior to the vaccine being administered to millions of people. Had that occurred, we might now be looking at a pandemic of bird flu rather than swine flu. How many cases – how many deaths? Despite a very low mortality rate (to date, there have been less than 500 confirmed H1N1 deaths worldwide compared with between 500,000 to 1,000,000 deaths each year (8) which human influenza is credited with causing) and evidence suggesting that H1N1 causes very mild illness, the World Health Organisation raised the pandemic risk level to its highest possible point – level 6 – and governments around the world are pledging tens of billions of dollars to rush through an untested vaccine. The tests being used to diagnose H1N1 are giving far too many false positive results (9) and what’s worse, doctors are not submitting samples to laboratories for testing. Anyone with flu-like symptoms is now assumed to have H1N1 swine flu – a decision which has increased the number of cases exponentially.(10,11) Swine flu vaccination – a shot in the dark / Influenza vaccines are among the most ineffective shots in the vaccine armoury. In healthy adults, the estimates of effectiveness range from a low of 0% to a high of 96% – depending on the study. In the elderly and immune-suppressed, the figures seem to hover at between 21 and 25% effective. In addition, some influenza vaccines still contain mercury in the form of thiomersal while the new swine flu vaccines are being made with novel, oil-based adjuvants which have been linked in the past with severe long-term neurological and other adverse health effects. These vaccines are not being properly tested and in fact, the vaccine manufacturers have been indemnified against litigation so even if you or your child has a bad reaction, the company that made and profited from the shots will not be held responsibly – morally, ethically or financially.(12) Despite the lack of information about these vaccine’s safety or effectiveness, it is planned that every man, woman and child will be vaccinated – both here in Australia and overseas. In fact, the first targets for these needles will be pregnant women and children. This vaccine – like all vaccines – has never been evaluated for its effect on developing foetuses. In addition, if we follow the lead of the United States, when this vaccine is administered to children, it will mean 4 additional shots in one year for kids – 2 of the human influenza vaccine – 2 of the swine flu. Our children will now be facing in excess of 60 vaccines before they reach school age if 4 annual flu shots are added to the childhood vaccination schedule. Will it be compulsory? / On July 14th, the Rudd Government ordered 21 million doses of the totally untested swine flu vaccine – enough for everyone currently living in Australia.(13) It is the contention of the Australian Vaccination Network (AVN) that the only reason they would buy this many vaccines is because it is their intention for all of them to be used. That would mean making the vaccination compulsory. While we support everyone’s right to choose vaccination should they wish to – we firmly believe that no medical procedure – least of all one which has such a long track record of ineffectiveness and risk – should ever be mandated. People must be able to choose not to get the vaccine if that is their wish. Should the government require it, we do not object to mandatory home quarantine in the event of a true epidemic breaking out. It will be up to each of us to ensure that our rights and the rights of our children and loved ones are protected and that no vaccination is ever made compulsory. AND FINALISED!!!!!!!!! If you’re in Brisbane, and you’ve had a bad experience with car sales people, go see Will Walker at Zupps Capalaba! 07 3843 8130 I will be picking up my new (Ok, demo) Subaru Impreza RX on Thursday. None of the salespeople I have spoken to offered me a hope, and none rang back when I mentioned a figure…..Will gave me the result I wanted, at a price I was happy to pay, and did it with style and skill! Thanks Will! Just as an aside, my beautiful friend Simon (aka p3rpl3x) took pity on me, and sent me a car in the mail…. Inside the box with the car was this: @Melbrackstone This car is much more your style! Will always run, as it doesn’t have an engine, price is well within your budget (you got change from $3!) is a convertible, so you can ditch the “Mum’s taxi” tag; and there is plenty of room in the boot (if you can get it open) for some camera gear! – p3rpl3x Thanks perp, you’re a doll :) So I’m wondering – New car woes The New Car Woes Stay Tuned The new car saga

  • A Revelation - Why I will never be a landscape photographer.

It’s true. I came to the realisation on the weekend on our trip to Liffey Falls that no matter how much I want to, I simply don’t have the right stuff to make it as a landscape photographer. For one, I am terribly unfit. The mere thought of walking through the bush for miles to some gorgeous but out of the way spot makes me break out in a cold sweat and reach for a chocolate muffin for comfort. I know, I know… I hear you saying “But you can fix that! Join a gym, walk every day – PUT DOWN THAT MUFFIN! etc etc” However, there are other contributing factors that aren’t quite so easy to fix. For example, my spectacular lack of co-ordination and gross motor skills makes my health insurer shudder if I even consider climbing on slippery rocks (or unslippery rocks for that matter) – or any other surface that is even slightly less than perfectly flat. My sense of direction is completely crap too, and friends have been known to want to come in our car on outings just for the laugh factor in watching me try to read a map. Walking off in to the bush alone would just be an invitation to the Tasmanian Tigers (who most certainly are still out there) to follow this hapless human with their knives, forks, and napkins – because sooner or later she is bound to become food. So you can maybe see that the above could be a little inhibiting on my sense of adventure? In fact… the only reason I have gotten many of the shots that I have so far is largely in thanks to my cheerful packhorse, slimey rock tester and chief bottom pusher upperer… my hubby. My number one son does his part too by holding my hand to steady me as I clamber over rocks, and gives me lots of encouraging support as I puff and pant my way up out of gorges – why do waterfalls and other good stuff always have to be at the bottom of impossibly steep ravines?? Number two son helps too by puffing and panting in sympathy :) I simply don’t have the right stuff to become a serious landscape photographer, but you know what? I am totally ok with that. Photography for me is more than a hobby, it is a part of my soul… something I could not live without in my life, but it’s unlikely to ever become my profession, as much as might sometimes wish it. This revelation has not sunk me to the depths of despair as it may once have. Nor has it made me feel the burden of perhaps selling myself short. Instead, I feel a lightening of spirit, a contentedness of the heart, acknowledging my limitations and working with and around them. I am an aspirational photographer and artist. And that’s pretty damn cool by me. Art washes from the soul the dust of everyday life. ~Picasso
