Gia Carangi was a shooting star...quite literally! This photo was from my very first photo shoot with Gia, for Vogue, July 1978 (the shoot date). The image is somewhat soft and grainy (due to it’s being a large blowup of a small image and because I worked to emphasize the grain Gia quickly rose to super star status as a model. But, just a few years later she became addicted to drugs and her life began a downward spiral. I worked with Gia only in 1978 and 1979. She was always lovely…full of life. full of fun and unpredictably spontaneous. Gia was one of, perhaps, two or three of the most inventive models I worked with in some fifty years of photograhing women. By inventive I mean that she would adapt to a situation and cast herself in a role that fit the shoot. If you look at photos of Gia by different fashion photographers you can see how she would take on a persona to fit the situation. Gia was a delight to work with. She died at the age of 26 from complications caused by AIDS. The writer, Stephen Fried, wrote a book about Gia, Thing of Beauty—The Tragedy of Supermodel Gia. To this day there is a huge following of Gia fans. This has been one of my most popular images of Gia.
A slightly more serious shot of the Falls. Went to Wilhelmina Falls today after work and walked all over these huge slabs. I have done a lot of rockclimbing in my past so am fairly sure of my technique in scrambling over this sort of terrain. It’s about keeping your weight over your feet and about keeping up some momentum. High it’s very counter instinctive to move fast but it seems to be the safest way. Upon getting to the overlap where the water freefalls there was a bit of moss and dirt in some cracks that I was obliged to use and before I knew it my boots were wet and dirty with a fraction of their former friction. In my precarious stance I attempted to clean them and after ten minutes or so was happy to move on now very aware of my precarious location since I’d just stared it in the face for a while. Maybe I should of paid attention to that sign ;-) Lovely spot, went there in the summer with kids, mum, sister and her kids lovely walk but the advertised perennial nature of the falls didn’t live up to expectations with it being bone dry. Great to see it today with heaps of water. 11/9/2008 To check out other shots from this area see my Yarra Ranges gallery. Beautiful Wilhelmina may be a witch. But, she’s certainly not of the wicked variety. Here she is with her faithful friend Pax the cat.
