It fascinates me how creation myths and evolutionary thought seem to converge around the possibility of a spark such as this igniting life. / Taken off the “Balcony” – a beautiful section of coastal cliffs in Royal National Park just south of Sydney Australia during a spectacular storm. I’ve shot about half a dozen storms here this year. The others all drifted out to sea which made them nice and safe and easy to photo so I got lulled into a false sense of security with this one. It decided to head straight up to where I was photographing and at one stage I had to hide under a rock overhang with bolts going off all around – deeply scary but wouldn’t have missed it for anything – a magic night of biblical proportions I can tell you and one I’ll never forget. It was formerly classified in a separate family, the Heliconiidae or longwing butterflies, and like other longwings it does have long, rather narrow wings in comparison with other butterflies. It is not closely related to the true fritillaries. It is a medium to large butterfly, with a wingspan of from 6 to 9.5 cm. Its underwings are buff, with large silvery spots. It takes its name from the fact that migrating flights of the butterflies are sometimes seen over the Gulf of Mexico. The Gulf Fritillary is commonly seen in parks and gardens, as well as in open country. Its range extends from Argentina through Central America Mexico, and the West Indies to the southern United States, as far north as the San Francisco Bay Area on the west coast. It is occasionally found further north in the US. We were really lucky to come across these “Little Bee Eaters” whilst on safari in Samburu National Park. More specifically, this image is important to me because most mainstream images of Lions show only only one side of them – the hunter, the killer. Well this is the shot that made it into the 2008 channel ten weather calendar, so I’m pretty proud of that.Getting this into the calendar was my first… ‘public’ recognition of my work so this is a pretty special shot to me. it is lightning over Adelaide looking down from Mount Osmond. It was taken in December 2006 and featured on the following nights news broadcast.

Busch Gardens; Tampa Bay, Florida USA The Emperor Penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) is the tallest and heaviest of all living penguin species. It is endemic to Antarctica, and is the only penguin species that breeds during the Antarctic winter. Emperor Penguins mainly eat crustaceans (such as krill) but also occasionally take small fish and squid. In the wild, Emperor Penguins typically live for 20 years, but some records indicate a maximum lifespan of around 40 years. The Emperor Penguin should not be confused with the closely related King Penguin or the Royal Penguin. These creatures are loyal to no avail, obtaining ONE mate for all their days and remaining ONLY with that mate til the end. As I said on my “Polar Love” image, this was the best day of our Arctic trip. We were so lucky to spend hours with this mum and cubs as they moved around the ice flows.
