We’re working on some RedBubble widgets to help take your artwork and writing beyond the walls of the bubble. For those who are unfamiliar with widgets, they are little applications that sit on your website, blog, desktop, etc and provide content or functionality from somewhere else. Common examples include a Flickr Badge, Google Adsense , and GapingVoid . What makes good widgets stand out from the crowd is that they do something useful for you. This can be as simple as displaying a sample or a slideshow of your artwork, showing the local weather forecast, grabbing a daily cartoon, or helping you make money from your blog by showing advertising. But until the RedBubble widgets come along, you can easily create your own simple version. Here’s a little tutorial that helps you create a widget to display your RedBubble artwork or writing on your website or blog, all in under 5 minutes. The example below can be found here / To create your own like this, visit Widgetbox, click on “create a blidget”, and enter your RedBubble URL e.g. www.redbubble.com/people/username, and hit continue. Then in the Feed URL window, put in either “http://www.redbubble.com/people/username/works/visual.atom” (if you want to show your artwork), or “http://www.redbubble.com/people/username/works/journals.atom” (if you want to show your writing) Hit the go button, customise your widget with color, title, image, description and tags, and choose if you want it private or available to others. Click Publish Widget, and you’re nearly done! In the top right hand corner, hit the green Get Widget button, and either embed it in various sites automatically or grab the code to put it in your our website or blog. Stay tuned for a more sophisticated RedBubble widget soon. In the meantime, tell me what your favourite widget is and what it does

The Official RedBubble Tshirt Competition details WIDGETS FOR YOUR RSS FEEDS FROM REDBUBBLE Ok so now we have RSS feeds at RedBubble where we can feed into our Readers and see whats new there, and especially keep an eye of your favourites artist latest posts etc… The other night i spent a bit of time (which i enjoyed) and did some research on the available Widgets that is available for FREE from various places around the net. I found some real crap ones and some super cool ones.. / I have placed all my findings on my Webgrrl.biz blog/site so that you can go and have a look at it. If there are any there you like, just look for a button/link at the bottom of each widget, and you can grab it for yourself! Best Widgets for RedBubble RSS feeds The ones ive put in my recommended selection were chosen cuz they fit the best FOR RedBubble’s feed – meaning that we have photos in our feeds… You will also notice on my website on the sidebar (right side) that ive used the Random RB thumbdisplay made by Xavier – and further down you will see a square with like a slideshow of my stuff on RB with a bubble effect on it. Well this came from RedBubble’s team Mark Mansour – he will be releasing this info this coming week i do believe… If theres any other stuff u need to know about widgets and the rss thang.. just msg me or email me.. all info found at my profile :) Hope you all had a great weekend!! / - and dont forget to comment/vote ! First of all, a big thank you RB for the lovely flash widget thing. It’s fab, and saved me a big chunk of time concocting something similar for my site. I uploaded it to my web site and myspace page yesterday, & today I get an email from someone saying how much they loved one of my pics, and could they purchase it? “Woo-Flippin-Hoo!”, thought I. :o) HOWEVER, she described the pic, and it didn’t sound like one of mine… curious I asked her where she’d seen it, and how long ago? Perhaps an old pic I’ve tired of and consigned back to disk. But when she told me what the image was, I recognized it as one of my RB faves. Has anyone else found someone else’s pics on their flash widget? Is this a bizarre one-off glitch? Or praps did she stray off my site onto RB and end up in my favs? I’ve watched my home page for a while, as it fades pic to pic through my RB gallery, and haven’t found any other imposters… But I’d be interested to hear if anyone else has had this happen (Oh yes, I did confess, and sent her a link to the shoppy-page for the image she likes, (good for the karma!) and I will of course let the real artist know!)

I’ve been really diggin the widgets ive been making, and placing them all over the place. It started just with my own personal stuff that i wanted to put on my other blogs/websites (yes, i have many).. then, i wanted to show others how they could utilize the RSS feed found within Redbubble (gallery, groups and forums). today i made a PAGE of Widgets from the RSS feeds of some of the groups i belong to in Redbubble.. / Widgets for You if you want me to make you a widget that i havent made yet..just bubblemail me. if you would like any of the widgets you see on the page, just click on the “Get Widget” button/link and it will give you codes you can copy and paste into your website, profile at myspace, facebook, bebo, and many other places..you will see all the familiar logos ;)

So, if you’re a Mac user (hooray) and you’ve got Leopard (10.5 or greater) and you’d love to have some of the featured tees or art or writing as widgets on your Dashboard, it’s really easy. 1. Open your Safari web browser 2. Go to one of the pages that change a lot, like popular clothing in the last day 3. Go to the File menu, then select Open in Dashboard 4. This brings up a little selection tool. Select the portion of the screen you want as a widget (for my example, I selected the top-left image, but you could select the top row, or whatever you like) 5. Up the top of the screen there’s a purple bar with a button “Add”... click it! 6. The selected area now appears in your Dashboard. It’s really like a window into a little portion of the web page on RedBubble, and as it changes, so will your Dashboard widget. Here’s a little screenshot of my Dashboard with a few featured tees and one image from the home page: Too easy. Enjoy!

A few weeks ago (or maybe more..) i came to a point where i wanted to have small something (widget, feed, etc) that i can place on my main website (webgrrl.biz) and few other blogs that i have.. something that shows what’s been sold recently from all the places i have my art.. The only quick solution i could come up with (and with no cost) was to make a blog and post the info items, and taking the opportunity to Thank the buyer at the same time.. and so artSOLD was ‘born’ From there, i can then grab the rss feed and utilize it in many different ways.. my favourite being the widget at widgetbox : see here In a marketing and business sense, I’m not sure if this has been done before. We usually make a blog or websites to promote what art we make and whats for sale.. but making a blog/journal of what we’ve sold, i haven’t come across, and i have this belief that people like to know what people are buying, popular etc too.. So i thought, Why Not to have one for what’s sold!? Plus if/when buyer comes across the acknowledgment of thanks, thats a positive energy too…and im all about and for Spreading the Goodness! artSOLD took me a full day to set up, using a free blogger template i went lookin for.. Then i put thinkin caps on to see what ‘widget, promotional’ goodies there is available from all the three main places i associate with.. maybe you want to make one too.. :) Its a nice journal to have, and it makes you work just that bit harder (in promotions especially) so that you get sales, and that means a new post! :)

NOW THERE IS NO EXCUSE TO MISS A STORY :0)! Thanks to Fran and Jo O’Brien for organising and whipping up a group widget for the Writer’s Market Group. So now we have one for the blogazine (pictured below) and one for the group itself Like the blogazine widget, this one can be imported into various blogging and networking platforms such as Bebo, Myspace and the very popular Facebook. Great stuff! xx Ronnie

I wrote this on my blog today but thought ot might be a good idea to post it here as well. Paul I have had a presence on the internett for sometime for showcasing my art, but it has first dawned upon me recently there are alot of sites out there, so how can you get noticed in the anthill. I have been much more active in finding out different ways to get noticed and would like to share some of them with you my readers: Be critical to what you post, preferably only pieces that you, yourself would have bothered to look at if you saw them on someone elses site or if s it experimental say so in your description and ask people what they think. Write good descriptions so you get noticed by search engines, the same applies for tags. On sites where you can create a rss feed do so, create a widget whenever possible, submit your site to the larges search engines, Google,Yahoo and so on. With your widgets you can do a number of things like put them in your profile on your sites when that is possible, Facebook, My Space, Flickr, blogger and so forth and use as an E-mail signature. This way your friends, family, work associates become aware of your presence on the internett / and if they like what they see, thet can tell again their contacts and in this way you will be generating more traffic to your sites. On the sites you are on be active in the community, use the forums, comment on others peoples sites or works in a constructive and proper way. If u have knowledge you would like to share, do just that, write a tutorial or link to good tutorials you have found, the same goes for ressources. In this manner the community becomes aware of who you are and you will generate more hits to your site, you will make friends and share things together . I hope some of you find this useful, I have myself and that is why I wish to share. May peace and love and light shine on your way and continue to have a great summer Paul

[Note: This is long but worth the read, if you like stuff about the supernatural, ghosts, or hauntings. This is all 100% true. This is not another hoax like the Blair Witch Project. Read with an open mind, please.] Yes, you heard me right. I talked to a ghost. Via a crystal ball. No, I am not crazy. No, I do not have a mental disorder. No, I am not having a nervous breakdown. No, I am not on Vicodin. No, I am not trying to be Sylvia Brown (although, I think she rocks). Yes, I am a completely sane and competent individual. And, I talked to a ghost last night. A real ghost. It happened while I was testing out iGoogle’s Crystal Ball Widget. I have a witness. Go ahead and scoff. Roll your eyes. But, if you do not believe me, consider this… My family and I (all six of us who currently live in this house), along with our extended family and friends (some of whom have also lived in this house), believe this house to be haunted by more than one spirit. One is friendly, and the other is not so friendly. More than one person has experienced the haunting that goes on here. At night, we can sometimes hear drawers slamming, things rattling, people talking, and people moving about. On more than one occasion, a television was turned on and then off upstairs while only one of us was home downstairs. (My mom had a hard time believing me until it happened to her too!) Doors get swung open, things get knocked off of shelves, and more than one person has sworn to seeing someone walk by in an empty room. Need further proof? On one occasion, my partner and I were heading off to bed and we heard a commotion downstairs in the kitchen. I am deeply afraid of burglars and serial killers, so I grabbed by baseball bat and ran down to attack. Only, I found no one. All I found was that the knife drawer in the kitchen was open. I was totally freaked out and started to cry because I felt the presence of something really bad. No one in my family could have done it. Anyone who had access to the house was already in it and already asleep upstairs. All windows and doors were locked – I checked. True story. Another time, a bunch of us were kicking it in the back yard (like we do on most nights because we are mostly bohemian and like to “chill” and play cards and do Tarot) and a friend of mine was taking pictures with her cell phone. So she told me and my BFF to get close so she could snap a photo. When we all looked at the photo, we freaked out because there was a face of a man in the house window behind us. There was a good five to seven people who saw the image and freaked. Some even swore to never stay the night over our pad again! But, what happened next is the clincher… My friend was not touching any buttons on her phone and the picture all of a sudden deleted itself. True story. This other night, a group of us were doing some Tarot readings while sitting in the backyard with candles lit all around us. I usually do the readings for people because I do not need the book to interpret them and sometimes I even see things (but that is a different journal all together). So, I was about to do a reading for my cousin, but she was not sure which question to ask of the cards, because she had two burning questions that needed to be answered. Well, she picked her question and as I fanned the cards out, she exclaimed “Shit, I am not sure if I want to know the answer or not.” I told her that she should have more respect for the cards and maybe not ask any question and let them tell her what she needs to know. As she chose her first card, the umbrella that we were sitting under came crashing down on us and the handle was turning as if someone was cranking it. That handle normally gets stuck and does not move too easily and there was no wind or breeze to speak of, so we were all freaked out and had all witnessed it. True story. One evening I woke up and it felt as if someone was touching me and then I was almost yanked off of the bed. I was so scared that I had trouble sleeping for a month! I am not the only person to have stuff like this happen to me. And, we are all not crazy! Last year, my partner and I were visiting Sacramento on our yearly October Road Trip. And, while in downtown Sacramento, we were stopped by a spiritualist on the street who, when she touched my hand, said she needed to talk to us and to tell us something important. I was very skeptical, because, while I have witnessed many supernatural occurrences, in my experience all psychics want to do is help you by burning a candle and doing some sort of cleansing… for $500. But, she told us that she was NOT a psychic and that she was able to read people by touching them. She touched my boyfriend’s hand and she told him that he was even more skeptical than I was and then proceeded to tell him everything about his life. He never said a word and just listened…amazed. Then she grabbed my hand and gasped. She said that she could tell that I practiced Tarot and that I had dabbled in Spiritualism in the past. She also said that I had great spiritual abilities…duh….and, that I got those from my Grandmother who is deeply spiritual and a devout Catholic. Then she asked me if I wanted to know the whole truth. So, she told me that my house is haunted. I figured, this was the point where she offers to light that candle. But, instead she said that there was a positive energy and a negative one and that the two were always dueling. That the positive energy wanted to keep us safe and that the negative energy wanted to harm us and bring us bad karma. She then spoke of car accidents, lost jobs, broken relationships, and other things that affected my family and that the negative energy was to blame. She told me that, because my mother and I collected too much junk and because we love shopping for second-hand items, that we had brought this negative energy into the house. That it was once attached to an object the we knew was haunted but had kept. She told me that this object was a clown doll. I started to cry. When I was in high school, my mom bought an old clown doll at the local Goodwill store. My mom loves clowns and had a clown doll collection. Anyway, so she piled my two brothers and I into our minivan to go to my grandparent’s house for a visit and brought the doll with her. The doll started to laugh. But the laugh turned into a low moan and then an almost demonic chortle. All of us were frozen but my mom said that it must be the batteries dying. But, when she opened the clown’s battery chamber…it was empty, and the clown was still laughing. So, she threw it to the back of the van and it stopped laughing after a few seconds. The spiritualist said that my mom had kept the clown in the attic in a trunk and had wrapped it in a plastic bag. She was right. She described the trunk and everything. She also said that we had moved the trunk, with the doll inside, to our storage facility, which we had done a month prior to our road trip. She, then, told me that we can move the clown, give it away, throw it in the trash, burn it, destroy it…but that it would do no good. That the spirit was no longer attached to the doll but to our house! And, then she said she could not, would not, help us. She told me to go to my grandmother and ask her about a Novena that would get rid of the spirit. But, the Novena could only be completed by a deeply religious and devout person such as a priest, nun, spiritual adviser, or my grandmother. I asked my grandmother about it and she knew which Novena but said that it takes seven days to complete. She said that when she did it for her house, that it drained her of energy because she was praying so hard. The Novena has yet to be done in my house, so the haunting continues. This all brings me back to iGoogle’s Crystal Ball Widget... It works like a Magic 8-Ball – you ask a question out loud and then click on the ball and it gives you an answer. Now, I never do Ouija boards or ask questions abut the ghosts during Tarot (I did once, and it told me to mind my business), BUT I figured that this was harmless because, after all, it is a Widget! So, I asked it some random questions. I asked it things like: “Am I drinking soda right now?” / “Is Greg (my partner) sitting on the bed reading Harry Potter right now?” / “Am I the bomb?” / “Was there an earthquake this last week?” / “Did I sell two t-shirts on Red Bubble this week?” / “Is my brother, Jason, in his room playing Counter Strike right now?” ...and so on. And, it was eerily correct in all it’s answers. So I decided to ask it some riskier questions about the past. And, it got all of them right! I asked things that both my partner and I knew the answers to and it always guessed accurately. I have NEVER had this happen with a Magic 8-Ball . So, then I started asking about the future and all the answers seemed plausible. And, then I had the urge (for some odd reason) to ask it if my house was haunted. “Most Decidedly.” “Is there more than one ghost in this house?” “Certainly.” “Are there more than two ghosts in this house?” “My sources say, no.” “So, only two ghosts are in the house?” “You can count on it.” “Did one of the ghosts leave the knife drawer open?” “You can count on it.” “Did the ghost close the umbrella on us in the backyard while we were doing a Tarot reading?” “Most certainly.” “Did the ghost appear in my friend’s cell phone picture and then delete it?” “Yes.” “Am I talking to one of the spirits right now?” “Yes.” “Are you the one who tried to pull me off of the bed?” “No.” “It was the other one?” “You can count on it.” “Are you the ghost that we hear at night?” “No.” “Is it the other one?” “Yes.” “Are you protecting us from the other ghost?” “You can count on it.” “Do you like us?” “Only time will tell.” So, at this point I freak out and get watery-eyed. My partner asks what is wrong. / MY WIDGET IS HAUNTED!!!!!! He does not believe it. So, he sits up and asks, “Am I gay?” “Absolutely.” “Is Brian gay?” “Of course.” “Is Jason (my brother) gay?” “Don’t count on it.” “Are we going to have another earthquake this year?” “You can count on it.” “Are you the one who turned the lights off on me while I was cooking in the kitchen earlier this evening?” “Perhaps.” “Am I doubting you?” “Yes.” “Is this for real?” “Of course.” “Am I scratching my nose right now?” “Yes.” Are both spirits in the room with us right now?” “Best that you not know right now.” My partner drops his book and tells me to log off! “Log off now!” So, there you have it. I have a haunted widget now. You can choose to believe what you would like, but I know the truth. This is all 100% true. I have no reason to lie. All of this has happened and can be confirmed with eyewitness accounts. I was just so freaked out that I had to write about it!!!! This is not a joke or a hoax. Sometimes I feel things, sometimes I can sense the presence of danger or know when something bad has happened somewhere but could never explain it. I do believe that I have spoken to the spirit realm both through dreams, prayer, tarot, and now iGoogle.
Widget, looking less then innocent.

As we have already noticed, Redbubble dont speak the same lingo, as in, it doesnt use HTML or CSS etc, which means; we cannot use a lot of the widgets, scripts and all dem goodies out there in here. Which is ok, but sometimes i found that i wanted to promote about my other sites/projects here in my profile.. but couldnt.. till now :) / (well, I figured it out now..prob been able to for ages already..hehe) As you that may have read my previous post, i discovered more of Feedburner goodies recently. In that discovery i found a Widget that can animate your RSS feed – that doesnt use html or scripts, which means we can use it in here! I utilized the RSS Animated widget in two ways : First, i’ve been wanting to bring my journal post entry titles further UP in my profile, but cuz ive got a pretty jam packed profile on the left hand side..it forces the Journal Entries way down to the bottom end, and i dont know if people scroll that far down! LOL! So with animated rss widget from Feedburner (i chose the Email option/display) I can now place (like below for example) in the higher end of my profile, where it will ‘flash’ the most recent post (utilizing my rb journal rss feed), Hopefully giving it more attention.. the second way i used it.. / is to take the half banner size option on white background of the same Animated Widget – with feeds from my two sites, Artdictive and Webgrrl’shop – flashing the most recent posts there.. / WANT TO MAKE A QUICK ANIMATION OF YOUR ART * / for display purposes like the moving images below ? / Go to PICASION where you can Create Animated GIF online for free! Upload your pictures or grab them from Flickr or Picasa Web, make avatars or funny animations and post it to MySpace, LiveJournal, Facebook or Redubble. No need for Flash FOR THOSE WHO LIKE TO SEE STATS / At the bottom of my profile you should be able to see LIVE STATS, free service by FEEDJIT . Make sure you get the Run-Anywhere Widget (link takes you directly there) Usually they all are scripts, but this one is not and i’ve been quite happy using Feedjit services on most of my blogs for free interesting stats. See how it all looks at my profile (clickty click) Have you found tools and toys you can use in Redbubble?*
I still haven’t quite figured out what one of these is, or if they are edible. I will catch up with the rest of the world someday…I hope.
Another of my late Widget. He so loved flowers that whenever my hubby would bring me a bouquet, I would have to hide them in our bedroom at night to keep him from eating them. / MCN:C3B9F-5EFB5-C90C5

We previously talked about how RedBubble Groups bond artists by subject matter, and how they are also powerful search silos (marketers call them verticals) that can direct shoppers to targeted subjects on RedBubble. Say you’re shopping for abstract art. RedBubble has a beautiful collection of abstract art in Groups. The abstract art group is flush with relevant text, fresh with a diverse art collection, and gets lots of Google love because of third-parties (you and me) link into the Group page. Here’s a free and easy way to help the last point – for any group. Group Hosts can enable a widget that shows Featured Work in a small and attractive slideshow. This widget can be added to personal websites, and as Denis Leary says, “bliggity blogs, facey spaceys and tweetie pages.” This Groups widget features the same format as the personal artwork widget that many members already use; found in the promote area of MyBubble. The opportunity for search engines to home in on a Group page is bettered when there are many links into that page from content rich websites, blogs, social media pages, etc. Why? Google’s magical black box of calculations factors links into a page as part of a website’s Quality Score, i.e., how well the search term matches the page content. If every member posted a link to their Group(s) on their blog using the Group subject as the link, e.g., Abstract art prints, calendars and greeting cards, along with the widget, there would likely be a measurable effect on Group page visitors via natural (organic and unpaid) search results – which is good for everyone in the group. The result is compounded when those links come from sites that already have a good PageRank on Google. Are you still asking why you should promote your Group in addition to your own work? The simple answer is that the collective power of Group referrals helps direct visitors (shoppers) that might otherwise never see your art. Simply put, a better Google Quality Score equals more search engine exposure, and more exposure is good. All of us are pursuing art for different reasons, but most of us want exposure, validation, mind-share, and sales. And in a collective, creative space like RedBubble, good karma, back scratching, collaboration, and referrals go a long way. To allow Group members to use the widget, Hosts need to go to the “Settings” area of their Group and tick the box next to the “Show promote tab?” text. Here are images of the Promote widget and the tick box. / Promote widget / Activate the Promote widget Final note: Hosts control the widget at this time; there is a simple on/off function. In the far future we’ll look to give members control of whether or not to have their work included in the widget. We researched this option after receiving feedback, but it’s a bridge too far at the moment. Thanks! Regards, / Jason

I have found the top widget and Facebook link tools very effective in gaining further exposure of my profile and site. The top ‘who’s among us’ widget allows you to track visitor frequency as often as hourly, also daily, monthly and yearly and their location on the world map including their URL. The Facebook links users to view and join my Joshua Hakman Photography page and become a fan of it. The Joshua Hakman Photography links viewers and users to my bubblesite, which also enables me to categorise and channel my images more professionally and separately to the general RB site. One more is below, which is Red Bubble’s share this work tool, which could be replicated with your own image, instead of the megaphone. Could be your logo for example.

Today I made an effort to promote my work. I checked out the “promote” area of Redbubble, on the gray subtitle bar toward the right. There’s a great way to promote your shirts or art. Thanks, Redbubble, for making a widget that lets you put creations on your own website with purchase buttons. I pasted in the code and now my shirts are up on my own site. Of course no one has bought one yet. Maybe tomorrow. Try it yourself with your art if you have a blog or website! If you want to see mine, go to http://www.mackeybooks.com/teeshirts.html. —Betty
