It is so hard to remember dreams. Scraps of memory remain when we are awake. If it is not a dream of frustrated never ending scenarios, then we will feel a sense of peace and renewed energy.
ride in motion
The first in a series of a study on whirls. / A spiral and a whirl differ in that a whirl is a shape rotated and resized. / A spiral is one long curve while a whirl is the same repeated shape inside of itself.
Whirling rides at the Florida State Fair. 10 second exposure at F 22. Tripod and patience to capture ride at the top of its spin cycle, and to have the Ferris Wheel in the background stable.
Found this on an old Sitka Spruce that became a nurse log long ago, from the looks of things. 20% of the proceeds from the sale of this work will be donated to Oregon Trout, a statewide conservation group working to restore freshwater health and habitat through innovation and education. It is a symbolic ritual through which dervishes (also called semazens) aim to reach the “perfect” (kemal). The aim is to abandon one’s nafs, egos or personal desires, by listening to God and the music (hence the term sema), thinking about God and whirling which has been compared to the orbiting of the planets in the Solar System around the sun. As explained by Sufis: In the symbolism of the Sema ritual, the semazen’s camel’s hair hat (sikke) represents the tombstone of the ego; his wide, white skirt represents the ego’s shroud. By removing his black cloak, he is spiritually reborn to the truth. At the beginning of the Sema, by holding his arms crosswise, the semazen appears to represent the number one, thus testifying to God’s unity. While whirling, his arms are open: his right arm is directed to the sky, ready to receive God’s beneficence; his left hand, upon which his eyes are fastened, is turned toward the earth. The semazen conveys God’s spiritual gift to those who are witnessing the Sema. Revolving from right to left around the heart, the semazen embraces all humanity with love. The human being has been created with love in order to love. Mevlâna Jalâluddîn Rumi says, “All loves are a bridge to Divine love. Yet, those who have not had a taste of it do not know!”

Acriylic on canson paper. Inspired by the following experience! My partner & I were in the Gulf country he was working on a bulldozer & I was sitting in the tray back sketch book in hand. We heard a noise in the distance that sounded like a train. Twenty minutes later a willy willy arrived stripping every thing in its path! Trees & branches were swept up and were whirling and swirling overhead! Luckily we were able to take shelter in the cab! My partner is the wizard in this painting and we are riding the Willy Willy! / / / featured in Works On Paper / featured in Globes, Spheres and Curves
The ritual of SEMA, the mystic dance of turning Mevlevi dervishs found its origin in an inspiration of the mystical islamic philosopher Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi, who lived and taught in 13th century in the city of Konya, Middle Anatolia (Turkey). Accompanied by the sounds of the flute NEY and other instruments, the whirling dervish is turning around his own axis, the right hand upward to be ready to receice God’s beneficence and the left hand downward to the earth. It symbols the mankind with their connection between heaven and earth. Remember the Devil’s whirl (Divčibare) I spoke about ? / This is the cottage I have stumbled upon while having a 20 km stroll :) Ok, ok, I was not using the closest route, actually I was very glad to find it and then to find a way back while the day was slipping away :) / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-——- / “The Cottage” is featured in the group – JPG Cast-Offs (22.05.2009) / “The Cottage” is featured in the group – Freedom to Shine (24.05.2009)
Upon reflection, it was an awesome feat to sustain whirling for so long. The dancers enter a trance and their devotion is true for all to see. Canon EOS 40D. 17-85 mm. Lightroom 2. Featured in Art of the Middle East and All things Egyptian
