Under the pier at Cowes, Phillip Island, Victoria, Australia at Dawn. Taken at the same time as Beginning of a new day for something a little bit different. It was pretty chilly, windy and way too early in the morning for me, it’s amazing how much lens distortion you get with a wide angle lens! / Settings Canon 40D, 10-22mm EF-S. This is for Mike, one of the weather guys on the Cocos Islands. Everyday we would ask him what the forecast was, and everyday he would reply “Mostly fine, chance of a shower”! I guess this was the “chance of a shower” bit! Mike is a great guy with lots of wonderful stories from his time spent living all around Australia. During my travels in six states in the past week, I finally landed in Durbin West Virginia, where I stayed with a friend of mine. This old coal steam engine depot is in her little historical town of Durbin. We finally got a chance to ride this train that soon will be reaching it’s centinial (100th) birthday in 2010. This engine is called The Durbin Rocket One of three coal steam engines actually running in the world. When we came to a short stop, I took advantage of shooting this (and yes, have quite a few shots while riding it) Something about the elderly gentleman looking at this engine remembering when he was a boy and rode trains like this enticed me to shoot it in black and white. This has not be converted, I changed settings on camera to shoot in BW, I will be adding more photos of my travels after I return from Texas this weekend. This was shot in SS priority, F-stop of 8.0, Exposure at 1/125, ISO of 400, Exposure Compensation at 0 / Best if viewed larger.
Bodie Ghost Town in the Seirra Nevada Mountains in Eastern California. This 1800’s Gold town once had a thriving population of 10,000 people. It was a true wild western town with gun fights, saloons and a huge redlight district.

The view on a miserable, cold, frosty, misty day across the River Stour from the bridge on Mill Lane by White Mill between Shapwick and Sturminster Marshall, Dorset, England. This narrow (about 9’ [3m]) bridge covers a rather wide span of the river. The span is increased at this point by an extra loop of river cut out to flow under the mill, which stands behind me. The build allowed for small recesses (see shot) in the road between each arch to let pedestrians stand aside from traffic. White Mill bridge is described as ‘the oldest and most beautiful in the county’. There are references to the building of a ‘Bridge on the River Stour adjacent to the White Mill’ in the year 1175. An investigation into the foundations showed that the bridge stands on timber pilings. These have been carbon dated to the 12th C. The original arches were rebuilt in the 16thC. The bridge, built principally of heathstone and Purbeck stone, possesses eight arches, and has undergone extensive repairs in the 20thC, although the original oak piles still remain in place. It has never been widened, this may well be the result of its being of a generous width for a medieval bridge in the first place.
Taken on the West Sussex South Downs in the UK. This photo was taken just after dawn on a very cold winters morning. The mist was rising over the local village in the valley inspiring this shot. Originally a color photo it was then treated in photoshop to give the photo a overall darker spiritual tone. This was taken with a Nikon D60. Thank you all for your kind comments. Paul

There are a number of locked private jetties that line the edge of the Blackwood River in Augusta. I got up early Christmas morning and managed to squeeze around one of the gates with camera and tripod in hand, I might not have taken this photo if i wasn’t so successful getting around the gate splash!
