Beautiful Aztec dancer at a Native American Powwow. She glowed with such an inner beauty and danced like a Goddess. It was hard to take your eyes off of her!

I took this shot 10 years ago in 1998 on a walk that traversed the Western Arthurs in south-west Tasmania. Although I’d been hiking for years this hike redefined what a considered a hard hike to be and what spectacular scenery is, Tassie is just breathtaking. To give you an idea of its severity imagine spending 8 days traversing a ridgeline of a mountain range and then taking just one day to traverse back along the plains to regain your start point! It is also the place where the man who really inspired and defined a lot of my photographic aspirations and inspirations died. Peter Dombrovskis once said, “When you go out there you don’t get away from it all, you get back to it all. You come home to what is important. You come home to yourself”. Leaving his mortal coil in such a place for me seemed like the right thing in a bitter sweet kind of way. This particular shot was also one of the first where I felt that I began to approach that indefinable something that some work possess that just fills you with a sense of reverence, awe and inviolability of place. This digital painting of a cowboy in a predicament is published by a national company as a greeting card and other gift products (mugs, magnets, t-shirts, etc.) The card has a verse inside “hope things are looking up,” a satirical greeting of hope and well wishes to anyone going through tough times. Whether in a western setting, humorous or serious, it is a look at the way life sometimes puts us at odds with seemingly impossible situations… you either laugh or cry, and pray like crazy. Now available as a print. Nate Owens / My Web Site

... but for how long? Our wild horses are at the center of tremendous controversy, as the government agency whose purpose is to protect the herds, announced that they have run out of funds for maintaining more than 33,000 captive horses—and one “solution” was mass “euthanasia”. Recently, the BLM proposed eliminating eleven wild horse areas from the Ely, NV District. All 620 horses in this area would be permanently removed from their natural environment, purportedly blamed for “environmental damage”. 50×50 x 3.8 Acrylic on Canvas. A wedding gift for a friend. Everyone thinks that us artists are gift shops… after years of nagging I finally painted a piece for my friend. She is mad about travelling the Western Australia Coastline in her new camper van with her now husband… so I pulled this one out of the old noggin (imagination).
Had a request a few months ago from George Gantt, one of the hosts of The Wild West Show Group ... for a portrait of Josey Wales (Clint Eastwood)....This is for you George! This is a Prismacolor Pencil, Pen and Ink and just a bit of Pastel Pencil. / Drawn on card stock, acid free, smooth bonded, artist drawing paper. I have also shown the steps I go through to achieve my drawings. This is for my art students that are using my RB site for study….and for all of you here at RB who may have wondered what my process is. First I draw a detailed graphite line drawing ( I love to draw so this is a fun part for me) and then I go in and play in the shadows. I tell my students to try and play in the shadows for as long a they can…this “grounds” the drawing and keeps everything in perspective…at least for me… Next, I develope the face…I feel if the face does not turn out…what is the point…I find lots of my students go to other less demanding areas to start…it turns out great and then they suffer the anexity of composing the face. This is when the left brain can start hollering VERY LOUD to put the pencils down and quit. This is why I ALWAYS do the face first. After I am satisfied with the face in its early form… I now feel that I can start my way through the rest of the drawing. Going back into the shadows and grounding the rest of the portrait. Then it is just a tighting up process…defining my colors, going in with the high-lights to seal the drawing. / Total drawing time is about 4 hours, less if I don’t find myself fighting with what colors to blend to get the effect I desire…some drawings feel like they draw themselves, others can challenge everything I feel I know. / Josey was a joy… / Thanks for viewing my art.
This shot was taken before the sun came up.. I went to check out the sunrise, but a storm had blown in and there was very little colour other than blue on the eastern facing coast.. so I headed over to the west coast and took some photos at Sugar Loaf Rock.. I’m very happy I did as I just love this shot! These were the actual colours captured by the camera, I haven’t photoshoped the colours at all, I’ve just adjusted the white balance down somewhat in order to exaggerate the blue that was already there.. love this shot! 3 minute exposure @ f10, ISO100 / ND400 + ND8 + ND4Grad All comments appreciated Paul Pichugin / http://www.paulmp.com.au
