OMG the very talented RACHEL LEIGH has nominated JUST BOOTS for the Pay it Forward Group She said ” “I love this photo because I know how difficult it is to get good pet shots and the lighting is just superb in this photo. Boots is as cute as can be and she captured him beautifully!” To me this is the highest compliment, thanking you so very much Rachel :O)) Waiting patiently for his morning walk…... Boots our dearest Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, has the unfortunate name, as being black and tan he has golden lower legs. He was born during the rugby world cup when England actually won something and as his breeder was a rugby fan she called him Golden Boots, after Johny Wilkinson! Started photography May 2008 Sold laminated print RB 23/03/09 BILLYBOY gave the most wonderful compliment when choosing Just Boots. I’m actually kind of glad this is in the Paws & Claws group because now that I’ve been given the opportunity to choose a picture from the group to single out, it’s fitting that my favorite pet picture of all time is right here so I can tell the world just how deeply I love it… / There are so many ways this works for me. The depth of field and selective blur draws attention to the perfect focusing on and around that amazing face, and I like the way the crop being slightly off center works so perfectly with the drape of the ears and the shape of the body. / The lighting is perfect and so natural… no blown out highlights or loss of shadow detail… the quality and direction of the lighting bring out that amazing detail in the facial fur and allows for that subtle reflection on the contrasting smooth surface into which he seems to be slowly melting. Also, the color space of the background matches the subject so perfectly that it’s a pleasing image to the eye even without taking the artistic level of the content into consideration. But I think what REALLY gets to me about this amazing shot is the affect the shooting angle has on drawing me into this pooch’s character. We’re down at his level, as if on equal terms with his world, and I feel as if I’m staring straight into his soul through those deep and all-knowing eyes… the connection between me and Boots is personal through this stunning image. This is a massive work of art and I am honored to be able to exaplin why it’s so special to me. Thanking you so very much Billy, it is such a wonderful compliment. xx Taken with my Sony F717, 800 ISO equiv. Lighting courtesy of my daughter holding a torch as there wasn’t enough natural light! Changed partially to sepia, then bluring and darker tones added for mood…..... Would make a super card ideal for any occasion, Birthday, Thank You, etc…. © Copyright 2008 Squealia, All Rights Reserved /
ALL PROCEEDS DONATED TO PHOENIX APPEAL The hand has been a universal motif since ancient times, whether it be a signature, greeting, protective device or healing tool. I’ve been working on a series depicting hands. Inspired by vision, they are few and far apart and like dreams will not be forced or summoned. The painting manifests completed in my mind, every layer of detail woven into the next in the manner of a tapestry; every element in the design holding meaning. When this happens I know its time to get in the studio and paint before the image loses potency and fades away. The hands in these paintings are my own and painted life size. They are meant to be expereinced not only as art, but as a focusing tool. By placing your own hand upon the image and concentrating on the colors and undualting lines, what they represent, and endevoring to sense this within your own fingertips and palms, the mind is directed toward awareness. Occupied, it ceases its chatter and allows you to be directly in the body, in the present moment rather than thought – traveling to the chores and concerns of the future or dwelling in a remembered past . Just focus on feeling the colors and what they symbolize to yourself and imagine pulling this sensation into the hand, to the heart and throughout the body. Then radiate it outward. Dont direct or worry about where its going anymore than the sun and stars concern themselves with where their light shines. Just focus on the sensation. In time you’ll be able to do this practice without a painting. Its a form of cleansing, washing away the dust and debris of the road. This painting itself is a feminine one, representing healer and healing. It was inspired by a friend who practices therapeutic massage, but the modality is not important here. This image is not only about the desire to heal others and self, but the drive and ability as well. I’ve written a few of my notes below. In many cultures butterflies are associated with the unfettered spirit, soul, femininity, and all that is beautiful and ephemeral. Lakota teachings say that butterflies flutter near girls and women, often landing on their shoulders, and convey knowledge regarding the location, harvesting, preparation and applications of botanicals. For this reason the monarch butterfly, so abundant on the prairie, seemed an ideal metaphor to convey the traditional concept of healing, healer, and wellness. The spots are patterned after the border of a monarch’s wing, symbolizing the Lakota woman’s affinity with butterfly medicine, but have other meanings as well. They are stars and fireflies in the night skies of summer, yin to sun’s yang , countering heat, dryness and light with cool, moist darkness. This imagery came one day as I held my hand before the sun, studying the way its shape was cast into deep shadow, almost a silhouette. I could feel the coolness in its shade. The sun flashed between my parted fingers and for a few moments afterward miniature suns danced across my field of vision, even when looking into the shadow of my hand. The two fingers glowing blue at the tips represent healing energy transferred by healer to client. This blue light is positive intention, conscious purpose, the place from which a healer draws power and luminous sky washed clean and purified by summer thunderstorms. The hand is dark (yin), it greets and touches the sun, source of warmth and light (yang). The small blue circle in the palm of hand is the void from which power is drawn. It is infinite, like the sky above. The swirling circle of orange is inspired by the patterns on a monarch’s wing, representing movement, new life, the birthing process, creation. There’s more, but this exerpt provides an idea of my intent. Whats more important is the way it resonates with you. Text copyright Helena Nelson -Reed. Please do not use without written permission.
Sony H5 with M3358 close up lens. Cropped back from 3072×2304 to 1808×1360 and rotated it for better viewing. Yes I know I can up-size it back to 3072×2304 but that way you loose image quality IMO. I have been selected to join the Australian THEBIPOLAREXPEDITION and to ski to the South Pole in November 2009. THEBIPOLAREXPEDITION a not-for-profit initiative is aimed at building a new awareness about the issues facing people with Bipolar Disorder and to raise funds to give grants for vital research into the causes and more effective diagnosis. We have partnered with the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund and the Black Dog Institute, and have arranged for Network Ten to be a media sponsor. The Bipolar Expedition is an exciting adventure aimed at raising awareness and money for research into Bipolar Affective Disorder. The Bipolar Expedition involves two treks – one to the South Pole in November 2008 and one to the North Pole in April 2009. Video footage from both will be made into a documentary about Bipolar Expedition (and fundraising activities during the lead up to the treks) . I am hoping to raise money for the project through a number of activities including the sale of this T shirt. http://web.me.com/davidcregan/Bipolar/WELCOME.html

It seems to rise from deep within us…. / yet maybe even beyond us…. / a sadness that defies our understanding / or our very will, / a sadness that comes from a place outside of our own existence… / that engulfs us indomitably. We who walk the Earth so gently, / know that this connection, / stronger than the gravity that holds us to her, / brings with it the knowledge of her pain / and the infinite lifetimes of sorrow. / Is this the source of our unknown sadness? This ancient wellspring from within the heart of the Earth… / wells up and breaks forth, flowing through us, / the tears of eternity, the pain of the ancient ones, / a sadness that knows no bounds, / to be set free through us, through our hearts and eyes, / and opening us to receive the flow of awareness, / healing and a renewed potential for life.

This painting represents the transformation of the goddess Boann into the River Boyne. Boann’s husband was Nechtan, who was keeper of the sacred well Segais (the Well of Wisdom). Around the well grew nine magical hazel trees, from which grew magical crimson hazelnuts. The nuts fell into the well feeding the five colorful salmon that lived inside the well. Each salmon represented wisdom obtained through the five senses and had distinctive crimson spots on their bellies from eating the hazelnuts. All, but Nectan and his assistants, were forbidden to approach the well. This restriction irked Boann, and she decided one day to approach the well. To spite her husband, whom she believed greedily coveted the well, Boann approached the well counter clockwise. But what she didn’t know is that the well itself had specific conditions in which one could gaze into it. One must approach clockwise three times before looking straight and steadily into the well or one’s eyes would burst from the power of the wisdom contained within. Boann peered cautiously into the well, which caused the water to rise angrily and it took one of her eyes. Because she approached the well counter clockwise, she had further angered the waters and so the well erupted with a torrent. Boann fled from the rushing waters losing an arm and a leg before the angry waters reached the sea, leaving behind a 70 mile long river, now called the Boyne River. Having lost one eye, one arm, and one leg, Boann was transformed. She existed from that point on somewhere half in and half out of the physical world. She became the soul of the river, but also something much more powerful. For when she released the waters of Segais, she freed the salmon of knowledge into the world. Now humans had access to the wisdom reserved only for the gods. Anyone who ate the flesh of the salmon, instantly possessed the knowledge they contained. Boann then became the patron goddess of poetic and spiritual inspiration. Her influence bridges the gap in the wisdom of mind to allow the feminine nature in each of us to stream into our being. Her sacrifice represents the transformation of the self that is required for wisdom to enter. Her essence is present in all rivers. To call upon her, one must simply invoke her name while sitting next to a river and listen with a clear mind and an open soul. Her gift of wisdom will transform you. Schlegeis reservoir, or artificial lake, lies in south west Austria. The mountains in the skyline are actually in Italy. On that day we hiked past this lake to the Italian border, some 15 kilometers.
