Thought I would show you a glimpse of how my town looks in the central business area. This is on the corner of Kerk (Church) Street and Eksteen Street in Middelburg, Mpumalanga (South Africa). A closeup of the White Church. Image Copyright: Mariaan Krog 2008. / Photos already in my portfolio: / / / History: / Middelburg was established as Nasareth, (root from dry land), in 1864 by the Voortrekkers on the banks of the Klein Olifants River. The name was changed in 1872 to Middelburg to mark its situation midway between the Transvaal capital Pretoria and the gold mining town of Lydenburg. A Dutch Reformed Church was built in 1890 and became a focal point in the area. The British built a large concentration camp in Middelburg during the Second Boer War. The Memorial Museum was built at the site next to the 1,381 graves of women and children died here.Across the ridge on the north-western side towards Botshabelo, the township of Mhluzi developed simultaneously and became part of greater Middelburg in 1994. The town also has its share of places of historical interest, including the White Church which was built in 1890. Proclaimed a historical monument, this is a true landmark of Middelburg, due to its size and architectural design. It was used by British soldiers during the second Anglo Boer War and is one of the few remaining structures that wasn’t destroyed during the war. The Meyer’s Bridge, built in 1896, has remained standing for over a century, surviving numerous floods. This national monument was created as a road link between Lydenburg and Middelburg at the turn of the century. / See my photo of this bridge: / Middelburg, the birthplace of celebrated playwright Athol Fugard, is in the heart of “Jock of the Bushveld” country. *Click on this link to see a satellite image of Middelburg / Copyright: Google Maps.

A view of the medieval bridge over the small river Weiss in the town of Kaysersberg (or Kaisersberg). The middle of the bridge carries a small chapel – just big enough for the statue of (iirc) Saint Mary. Kaysersberg is located in the foothills of the Vosges and was historically an important passage point between the Rhine Valley and the Lorraine. 1227 the town is first mentioned in documents as Castrum Keisersberg. / Friedrich II had the strategically important point fortified – though it is probable that there was already a castle here, before the commissioned mayor Wölflin bought the ground that was then fully fortified. Of the mighty castle remains only a ruin. / 1293 Kaysersberg received City Rights and in 1353 it joined the Décapole (the 10-city alliance of Free Imperial Cities in the Alsace). / After the 30-Year-War Kaysersberg came under French rule as stipulated in the peace treaty. Today the town visited by many tourists – partly for the medieval architecture and partly for the wine (Tokay variety) when they follow the wine route through the Alsace. Another magnet for some tourists is the birth house of Albert Schweitzer that now houses a museum dedicated to this son of the town. ++ Location: Kaysersberg, département Haut-Rhin, Alsace, France

here’s an image with vintage fish and flowers and a gritty background. I designed this for scrapbook paper but I like the design for posters as well.
here’s digital I created using a Victorian bird mixed with a gritty textured backgorund, number and then softened with florals.
Because I enjoy using text and numbers in my work I had fun pulling all these images together to create a numbered collage. Some are license plates, otehrs are road signs.

corrupted faith White roses are standing for faith, confidence, loyalty and sorrow. I made a HDR out of three shots in bw. In PS I worked with the gradation curve and the selctive colour correction. / The coloured rose stood four days in inked water and is standing for the corrupted ideals mentioned above. Have you ever made this experience: You were faithful, or you trusted somebody 100% and this didn’t came back to you. The other person didn’t thought the same way like you. It hurts. It hurts like you get a knife in your back and in the middle of your heart at the same time. / I’m lucky. I never was cheated (I hope so). The only thing is: after more than 5 years I found out, that I never was trusted 100% (like it should be in a relationship). The relationship ended before I found it out, but it hit me hard. That’s life. But hey, it goes on :D. Never give up! FULL VIEW RECOMMENDED!!! —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- / This is no stock-picture. Sveti Krsevan (Saint Chrysogonus) is a beautiful Romanesque church in Zadar (Croatia). Saint Chrysogonus is the patron saint of Zadar. The interior of the church has been restyled later and is now Baroque. ++ This photo shows a detail of the gable next to the choir, which has interesting ornamental stonework done.

During the “Wein & Musik”-Festival in Staufen 2008 The weather was not quite as good this year as during the previous years with repeated rainfall and thunderstorms. During one particularly strong episode of rain accompanied by some lightning and thunder people quickly searched shelter under umbrellas (originally thought to be used against the sun ;) ) or in entrances or shops. + Scan from negative – Ilford HP5 ISO400
