I had the privilege to be my sister’s photographer for her wedding on Saturday. The actual wedding ceremony was all presented in the Mormon temple, which since I am not an active Mormon, and neither were my other sister, nieces, or father, we all got to stand around outside the “Castle” (as my 5 year old niece preferred to call it) for about an hour. I don’t know how unfortunate this is, but every photo shoot that involved my sister, her now husband, and I also included the rain. Who invited the rain? Honestly! Some lady from the other side of the family explained that I must have been the bad luck. I don’t know what the chances are, but out of the two times we took engagement photos, and the one wedding, each of the three photo shoots involved rain! What is up with rain and photo shoots? Well, I have never had any other issues involving rain in any other photo shoot! At the temple we decided to go inside to take some pictures in this interesting plant lobby area, and I am still not quite sure what to think of the way everything was presented in just the temple lobby! I felt extremely uncomfortable with the weird looks that I was provided by the “staff” in all white, and the other people sitting around. I understand they meant the best, but something about me carrying a professional grade camera into a highly respected place, always brings me weird looks! I often get mistaken for a photojournalist. I am starting to get used to it, but I am planning on getting a bigger lens in the near future, so I best get used to it! The temple lobby was awkwardly quiet! Upon leaving the lobby after finishing up with the quick photo shoot with my sister, her husband, and all the family members, my youngest niece had the bright idea to book for the inside and she almost made it! It was like watching a fugitive try to escape prison! I wouldn’t blame them! Both my nieces thought this was a castle, from all those Barbie movies, I would have booked it for the inside too! The wedding reception was planned for outdoor, even with the rain showers for the entire state of Oregon. It was eventually moved to indoors, and everyone stayed dry! Overall, it was a fun experience, all the pictures turned out great, and everyone lived happily ever after! I learned a lot from this experience. I do have some rain cover equipment for my camera that I didn’t bring (It doesn’t fit my camera). So, maybe I should invest in one that DOES fit, since I live in Oregon. Luckily my Nikon D200 is relatively weather sealed for moments like these! And fortunately we were able to find alternate sources to avoid the rain (by going indoors)! Does anyone have any fun photo shoot stories (especially involving unexpected rain)?

I just shot my first ever wedding solo last ANZAC Saturday, what an awesome wedding it was! Everything just clicked. Eventhough it was a 5-hr return drive from Perth to Dallelyup (20mins from Bunbury) driving alone in the dark was definitely an adventure! I manage to pass 11 roadkills on the way, spent 15 cumulative hours of post processing despite my Pharmacotherapy midsemester exam coming up which I am screwed for – but worth every single bit of my time. Nick told me that when he and his mum first opened the folder she burst into tears. Hearing those things makes it all worthwhile. So without further ado, here are the photos: Congratulations Nick and May! =)

A couple of months back a long time friend asked me to take some pictures at her daughter’s wedding in December. I had known her daughter since she was about 2 years old. So it was a bit of an honour, but it was also scary as well. The only other wedding I have done was back in the 1990s and that was not that good. So after some research and speaking to my wife, I decided to go ahead and do it. I was luck to pick up a Sony Alpha 900 DSLR in the weeks before the wedding along with a Sony HVL-F58AM flash and a Minolta AF 24-105D lens to go with the Full Frame Camera. I also loaned a umbrella and flash stand from a friend, but need a new adapter so I could mount the Sony flash. The HVL-F42AM that I already had was fitted to this on the day. So after getting some practice in with the A900 at friend’s end of year concert I was as ready as I could be for the wedding. I had with me a Sony Alpha 350 and the 900 bodies. For the Lenses I had a Sony 16-80 Carl Ziess for the 350 and a Minolta 24-105 and a Sony 16 Fisheye for the 900. As well as tripod, flash stand, 2 flashes and 4 or 5 compact flash cards ranging from 16 – 2 gig. So with all this equipment in car, I programmed the GPS and headed off. Still scared I was going to stuff it up… I arrived at the house just as the girls were getting their hair and makeup done. I set up the flashes and started taking pictures of the bride getting her makeup done. Here she was sitting under the lights in the kitchen… After a quite a few shots I realised that she was also sitting in front of a sink full of dirty dishes. It’s about now that I realise that you need to check your background when shooting and that I was in for quite a bit of post production work. So to help a bit I opened up the aperture for a shallow depth of field and to blur the back ground. So after getting some good shots of the girls in various stages of makeup and hair I then head over to the guys while the girls dressed. The guys were nearly ready, but they were having trouble with their ties. Lucky I know how to tie a Windsor and fixed them up. A few shots and then straight back to the girls. The girls were now dressed and the Limo was there. So we did a pretend get in the Limo so I could arrive at the venue before they did. Again the background will be a problem. This time I needed to deeper depth of field so I could fit the whole Limo in. (see images, please comment a cretique). I headed to the venue to get the lay of the land so to speak. I found out where the Limo will arrived, where they will walk and where they will stand for the ceremony. I even got a couple to stand in for a couple of test shots. I also check out where I could do group shots, this time checking what will be in the back ground. I also took some shots of bushy backgrounds so if needed I could add those in later. The limo arrived, they walked in and the ceremony started, so far so good. As I was taking the shots I was let down a little with the 24-105. At 24mm it was wide enough to get the full bridle part in, but at 105mm it was just a little too short for close ups on the Groom and Bride. But with 24mpx on the a900, I can easy crop and still blow up to A4 and beyond. After the ceremony and signing, they wanted a group shot of all who attended. So we got the all together and it’s right about now that I wished I had brought a small ladder, maybe a 2 or 3 step one would have been fine. I basically had to make do with a chair, and that was a bit scary. So mass group shot out of the way it was down to the usual set of shots, groom, groom’s men, groom’s family etc. etc. Some of the ‘helpers’ also got in on the act and when finished I had filled a 16gig card with about 600 shots. Back at the reception I took a few shots of the guests even though I said I would not. There is nothing worse than taking pictures of drunken guys and who wants a camera in your face when you’re trying to relax… I did take shots of the cake and the cutting, then I called it a day, all up I think it went quite well. But now the real works starts, there is the DVD and the 20 page wedding book to be done…
