RedBubble is still only a baby – just a little over a year old – but we have crawled our way into the arena with the big boys and girls. We have just learnt that we have been recognized as an Official Honoree by the Webby Awards, a distinction that recognizes work exhibiting remarkable achievement. Hailed as the “Oscars of the Internet” , the Webby Awards are the real deal. They are judged by a lot of serious, really famous folk: David Bowie, Harvey Weinstein, Arianna Huffington, AKQA Global Creative Director Rei Inamoto, Matt Groening, Jamie Oliver, Internet inventor Vinton Cerf (now that is serious), and Rob Glaser. “The Webby Awards honors the outstanding work that is setting the standards for the Internet,” said David-Michel Davies, executive director of The Webby Awards. “RedBubble’s Official Honoree selection is a testament to the skill, ingenuity, and vision of its creators.” And who are “its creators”? If this was a beauty pageant we all would be going up to Flickr and giving it a big collective kiss for winning the Webby award. Yes we came in a commendable second to them in the Community category. I am not sure, however, that it feels much like a loss. It was a joy to read the lovely comments (314 of them) on the Webby site about RedBubble. This puts us in the top handful of most commented sites. RedBubble still may be small(ish) but at least we’re passionate. We captured just a few of the comments for posterity including: SHRyan: “Without doubt the best community site I have ever come across. So much talent and support for each other. Puts others in the shade.” Tim Chuma: “I have had my work on my own personal site for over five years and it hasn’t come to as much notice as having it up on RedBubble for less than a year. I have met a few people in real life due to it.” Monster your …: “RedBubble is awesome in it brings so many different cultures together with art, design , photography, friendship, guidance and much, much more! Deadsie: “RedBubble is by far the best website which supports the arts of creative people. Whether its writing, artwork, simple designs or just finding that certain group for you, there is something for everyone.” Northbeacher: “Some of the work there is absolutely stunning, really no exaggeration – there is some truly extraordinary never-seen-before art on the site, and the community is “top shelf”, great people, and you can harvest a multitude of ideas, resulting in “why didn’t I think of that”. OK, we admit it would have been nice to be the bride not the bridesmaid and we all were being very well behaved in public, but nevertheless it does leave a certain collective warmth.
