A bit of a Gothic mood…based on a wonderful old building in Melbourne.

The earliest recorded weather vane honored the Greek god Triton, and adorned the Tower of the Winds in Athens which was built by the astronomer Andronicus in 48 B.C. The figure, which is believed to have been 4 to 8 feet long, had the head and torso of a man and the tail of a fish. To the ancients, the winds had divine powers. In Greece and pre-Christian Rome, weather vanes depicting the gods Boreas, Aeolus, Hermes and Mercury decorated the villas of wealthy landowners.

Spinning in the storm winds and rain, this weather vane was standing on the road towards Hawes in North Yorkshire, till it fell.

Old weather vane atop barn at Yamma Farms, an exclusive estate in the area, once belonging to the Lundy Estate. This farm was exquisite in its day, tiled roofing, silos, and greenhouses graced the property. The property was purchased and is in the process of “restoration” I call it destruction as the buildings are not being restored as they were, but modernized.
