  • Most of us can remember a farm we used to love to visit or a farm we once called home. Whatever the case, this nostalgic scene brings back memories of simpler times and family ties. I talked to the elderly couple who built this barn. It’s over 50 years old, they told me; they built it themselves. Their house burned down and was rebuilt, but the old barn survived and still stands, a page in a memory book that will never be erased.

  • Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery A Place Where Time Has Stood Still!!! Of all the old gold mining towns in New South Wales, Sofala is one of the most interesting and unusual. While hardly comparable with Hill End, which is 35 km further on and much more carefully preserved, Sofala is a village with an authentic olde worlde charm. In essence its nothing more than two streets which have no formal construction and no curbing and guttering and yet which can legitimately claim to be ‘Australia’s oldest surviving gold town’. Sofala is located 245 km north west of Sydney and 45 km north of Bathurst in the Turon River valley. It came into existence as a direct result of the goldrush which had been precipitated when Edward Hargraves discovered gold at Summerhill Creek on 12 February, 1851. By June that year a tent city spread across the valley and both the Royal Hotel and a General Store were built in 1851. By 25 June more than 200 ounces of gold taken from the Turon Valley had been sold in Bathurst.

  • Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Bonnet Island Lighthouse at Hells Gate Macquarie Harbour, West Coast Tasmania, Australia. The narrow 120 metre entrance to the huge Macquarie Harbour was discovered in 1815. Within a year, timber cutters moved in. Navigating the narrow entrance and its sandbar was an essential hazard in getting the timber to Hobart. / A signal station was erected near Cape Sorell in 1822 to indicate conditions entering the harbour. It was manned by convicts from the newly established penal settlement at Sarah Island. / The conditions were so bad at the new Sarah Island that the convicts named the entrance to the harbour Hells Gate. Other records indicate the name was used due to the enormous rush of the tides through the entrance to the harbour which can create very dangerous conditions. / In 1891, a light was exhibited from two white six sided wooden towers, one on the western side of Entrance Island, and the other on Bonnet Island. Also, a breakwater was constructed at Hells Gate to check the sandbar, and in 1899 a light was constructed a Cape Sorell. / The Strahan Marine Board purchased a dredge in 1909 and continued to improve the entrance so that many large vessels could enter. / The Entrance Light was powered by gas until 1977, when solar panels and batteries took over. / The weatherboard cladding was renewed in 1989. • If they ever widen the main road through Eltham then this house will have to go. It is on the flood plain of the Diamond Creek, and so although lived in, has little major work or maintenance done for years. Taken with Pentax camera on Kodachrome film.

  • Taken last weekend in Kyneton, Victoria, next door to our friends place. The Blue stone builing in the background is the a storage shed to the Heritage building on the Corner that is about to be turned into a resturant. It is on the corner of the only crossroad in Victoria with all 4 buildings on the Heritage list. So I am told anyway. Edited in Photoshop with layers and fractalius.
