I just got back from a photshoot with one of the artists from my work. We had suggested to him that he use more ‘normal’ looking models and somehow Sharon and I volunteered to be photographed for his work in a spur of the moment kind of way- and he took us up on it. He was a great guy, very professional and VERY creative. I’m just dying to see the finished product. He had this massive set of wings made from peacock feathers- SO impressive looking. I had wing-lust. We got a few different sets of things. A predator/prey type set, a draping across furniture set, a bundled into a ball on the floor set and an embracing set. It’s been a long time since I was in front of the camera- I’d forgotten how much fun it is. Gotta love being the centre of attention for a couple of hours and getting to play a role and be a character. The drama student in me has had a great morning. There was only one down side- I got home and couldn’t look through all the shots that had been taken. I knew there was a reason I prefered taking the shots to being in them. I’ll just have to exercize some patience!

I enjoy wearing interesting, ironic, computer-related, nerd, geek and word-based t_shirt’s. Here is all the t_shirt’s on www.redbubble.com I’d love to purchase. New Addition: [15-Sept-07] / I hope I win the lottery next week. And I must like this one. It’s my only contribution to the clothing side of RB.

Are you one of those folk who sit at the computer stark naked or with very little clothing on? Okay – don’t answer that. The mind boggles at the thought. I’ve been busy fiddling with the computer and come up with my first T-shirt design. Wowee you say? Seriously, if you like what you see then feel free to make a purchase. Thanks for looking folks – much appreciated. Click on one of the designs for a closer look at the peep show. Cheers.

Hi, All No I am not asking about what a Scotsman wears under his kilt!! :-) Just a quick question to see what peoples views are on whether you should wear your glasses when looking through the view finder of an DSLR? I have just been recently given both!! So I not too sure if the combination works! I did manage to find a bit about it in the Canon handbook – they reckon either way as you can set/adjust the eyepiece lens to suit your vision with or without glasses….. Thanks Gerry

The postie just turned up with one of my t-shirts: And it looks good too (that’s more a statement about the quality of the shirt, not my design). If/when I get the chance I’ll do a buyer’s booth photo at some point.

Time for a bout of honesty. / I’ve worn masks all my life, no not bits of plastic, rubber or material but other far more dangerous masks. / There was the mask of cute compliant kid – the blonde headed blue eye ‘Little Max’ who was abused, ignored, not hugged, cuddled or told he was loved or special. / There was the mask of fun full on teen Max who grew tall quickly and was into everything, bushwalking, camping, abseiling, who could do anything with his hands in wood or metal, he was not very goo at sport but was an expert at laughing and getting others to laugh too. / Then there was the extreme extrovert Max flirted with any girl that caught his eye and drank way, way too much. / The stark truth is confrontingly simple; we all wear masks to hide the pain, the fear and the demons of the dark. We all need to just keep going on our journey until we find the one who loves us despite of us, whose love can never be earned, added to or warranted, the one who loves so hard the mask drops off and through it all the real Max/you can emerge.

RPGesus, Muscularteeth, Zomboy, and I have started a new group. It’s called WTF are you wearing!?. The main purpose of the group is to give t-shirt artists a place to show their alternative views of anything they want. Sorry, but it’s not intended for the “My little pony” crowd, little lost Emozoids, or people that just want to slap dirty words on a tank top. We are hoping that somewhere in between that, we can feature all the really creative unique views that you freethinkers all have. Please stop in and take a look at WTF to see what’s there so far, and show us what you’ve got.

The Selling articles detail tactics and marketing channels that you can use to sell your art and design. And while we’ve received great feedback about these practical tips and tricks, this is a good juncture to step back and discuss the mindset and culture of selling art. As a photographer and printmaker, I wish that people would simply see and buy my work. And sometimes this happens. However, an impulse purchase is counter to how many art sales happen. Most enthusiasts and collectors want the same emotion from the art buying experience that they get from from the viewing experience—a connection, a feeling, a memory, an aspiration, etc. After all, relationships sell art. So, what does it take to sell your art? A sampling of RedBubble members that have demonstrated a dedication to this pursuit shared these thoughts. 1. Have confidence and a hint of modesty. You created the artwork or the design and that’s amazing—embrace it. A simple “thank you” can address a compliment. Janis Zroback publishes some very good journal articles about art and selling theory. 2. Talk the talk. Buyers are interested in your background and the story behind the artwork. Feel confident in chatting about your work. Also, ask the viewer questions; get them invested in the work in order to further their interest. If you’re uncomfortable at first, practice your 10-second pitch with a friend or family member. It also helps to have supportive ‘agents.’ Karin Taylor has friends and family members that act as her representatives. Says Karen, “My family members are my biggest advocates. They run out of my business cards all the time and ask for replenishment. They have the guts to go where I am afraid to go and put my case forward, and they do it in a great way, very conversational, without all the nerves.” Karin does a great job herself here on RedBubble, and offers a live chat link from her profile page. This reminded me of a comment last week by Tom Baumker. Tom hands out dozens of business cards per day. Tom meets many sales leads where he photographs “on location.” 3. Join customers on common ground. It’s worthwhile to “join your audience.” Scott Robinson recommends, “I’m a member of a lot of different sites based around things I love. Namely skateboarding and comics – two things that a lot of my work consists of and revolves around. I don’t use these places as somewhere to promote myself, but as an active part of those communities, I do build up relationships there and can make posts of my art (and links back to RB) wherever appropriate. Using discretion of course—no-one likes spam. You have to respect the communities you’re a part of.” 4. Walk the walk. Scott Robinson and Diesel Laws wear their work constantly. For print artists, use greeting cards or printouts to advertise your work. You can print your work on ink jet sticker, label, perforated business card, or photo paper. Pass along these samples at parties or other public events. Marketing doesn’t need to be expensive. Or, simply hang the work on your wall. Bruce Watson noted, “I have actually sold it – Cell Phone – as an RB framed print also, but not on RedBubble. A visitor to my home liked it so much they bought it off the wall!” And finally, 5. Challenge yourself. Entering challenges not only improves your exposure on RedBubble – which encourages feedback and interaction with others – but it also says that you believe in your work. Winning a challenge would be nice, but entering is the first step. As I stated before, selling is a marathon and not a sprint—just like the creative process. Matt Simner captured this best when he said, “Self-promotion is a constant voyage of discovery. I believe a fair percentage of exposure I’ve got (which has overall increased views, etc.) has been a by-product of me just doing what I do naturally (sharing information, giving encouragement, trying to help), rather than explicitly ‘trying’ to get more exposure. Of course when you realise that’s the result, it gives you more ideas…” Please add your thoughts on selling below. Selling isn’t easy for everyone (for most people really), so I hope that this article makes you feel in good company and gives you some inspiration to keep going with it. And one last thing. Thanks to the members that contributed above. I reached out to many other artists whose feedback I’ll note in future posts. I welcome any other thoughts, case studies, tips, tricks – anything you want to share as related to selling. Thank you. Regards, / Jason p.s. One week ago I uploaded my Enter The Dusk T-shirt, & almost immediately it was featured by RB on the T-shirts page. / Since upload it has been viewed almost 600 times, has sold 4 times, & is the 2nd most popular Tee for the past 7 days. (second only to Shotgun Wedding by BigFatRobot ...... who can top a Tee like that? It’s hilarious!!) All of these things have me feeling extremely grateful to all concerned, & I Thank you, but it also has me thinking….. / I’ve made quite a few T-shirts, & each time my skills seem to be improving; albeit slowly. / Yet, it’s this particular Tee that has proved to be a success for me. / I can only assume it’s because of that feature on the T-shirt page…... / So Redbubble, for giving my T-shirt the opportunity at a little bit of extra exposure, I Thank you whole-heartedly!! edit some hours later : woohoo!!! Just made most popular in last 7 days!!! THANK-YOU!!! While you’re here, lets share the love & check out some of these fabulous T-Shirts from other bubblers : /

Wow. Almost a month without an update. Anyone would think I’d moved house… But I haven’t yet. Well, not properly. I’m currently staying with my friend Mat as I sold my bed two Saturdays ago, and I’ve been packing and sorting and garage-sale-ing and exhibiting and all manner of other things. Unsensored09 and Corangamarah Art Prize have both been and gone. The opening of Unsensored09 was very enjoyable, catching up with other Silver Miners and also with a friend I randomly ran into about a month or so ago whom I hadn’t seen for about 10 years, and meeting his lovely wife. The opening of Corangamarah Art Prize at Otway Estate Winery & Brewery was also a great night. Meeting those behind the prize, being interviewed briefly for the Colac Herald, and being totally spoilt by attentive staff ensuring I got enough vegetarian fare during the course of the evening. The food was absolutely delicious. The work in both exhibitions was very strong and I was pleased to see my work hanging alongside Simone Maynard’s again this year, and also Samantha Everton’s work, another Melbourne-based photographer I greatly admire. Despite my initial intentions of these two exhibitions being my last in Melbourne and surrounds for a while, I’ll have three prints on display in Brunswick Street Gallery’s Picture This ‘09 exhibition opening at 6pm on 11 September 2009 and running to 24 September, and Mark is holding a number of my prints in his storeroom ready for a new display room to be opened in the gallery in a few months. And my plans for overseas travels in 2010 are coming along nicely :D As you might imagine, with all the upheaval of my impending move I haven’t had much time to edit new images, though I have been shooting, but above is a new self-portrait I took last weekend in Jessica Tremp’s backyard before setting off for James & Jo’s wedding. Hopefully we’ll be back to our regularly scheduled programming in September! Oh… and this dress? one of two new favourites from my soon-not-to-be-local-op-shop. each dress was only $6.99! i’ll miss that place sob

So, as part of my continuing portfolio clean up I’m removing some more images – not because I don’t like them (because they are piss-amusing) – but because I’m aiming for a certain feel to my collection of images. These are images from a collaboration with the rather groovy Helen Maclean The idea was to do a parody of a series she took of the lovely Jo O’Brien I have to say, we nailed it perfectly. So, if you are disturbed enough to want to purchase any of these images, they are still available in Helen’s portfolio, and that is where the links go now.
