If you’re constantly exposed to it, I fail to see how it can’t affect you. / I just whipped this up tonight after being inspired again to create by Scott Robinson.

Bin The Cluster Bombs / More than 100 countries attending a conference in Dublin, Ireland formally adopted a treaty to ban cluster bombs – a large, unreliable and inaccurate weapon that often affects civilians long after the end of armed conflict. Some of the biggest makers and users of cluster bombs cited by human rights groups, such the United States, Russia, China and Israel, were not involved in the talks and did not sign the accord. Organizers expressed hope that those nations would nevertheless be pressured into compliance. / Source: CNN

Photographic based digital montage – Feb, 2008. Created over several hrs…2 nights this week (suffering from concussion) from an accidental fall over the wk’end. Photoshop montage combining digital shots of jewels, scanned samples of vintage style wallpaper and added drawn elements. Fifty layers retouched, blended, filtered, colour & tonal curve adjusted. I want to use the design as a furniture (upholstering) fine velvet/suede fabric for a small round bedroom foot stool. Nice to spend time on my own artwork. After work husband Dave & I pretty much spend all our spare time renovating/working on our 123 yr old victorian terrace…so a bump to the head stopping me in my tracks wasn’t such a bad thing after all.

Child’s Play – Think Again / The AK-47 Russian automatic rifle designed in 1947, is amongst the most smuggled weapons of recent times, finding its way to conflicts in the Balkans, Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia. / In countries like Rwanda, Mozambique, Congo and Ethiopia this weapon was used by up to 100,000 children in armed conflict in 2005. Today it is estimated that there are between 200,000-300,000 children serving as soldiers for rebel groups and government forces in current armed conflicts. / Source – Human Rights Watch Child’s Play 2 /

Just a little spin off from the handgun image i was working on…mixed with talking about this expression. “words are weapons” the other day. Its kinda a bit existenz meets aliens…creepy like. Anywho, One to raise the awareness that people should watch what they say as it can hurt the feelings of other people. I could have gone the other way and called it shooting off your mouth, but hey…im the peaceful type at heart. / ;-)

An image that came to me when I thought about the kind of written work many people define as being called, ‘Hate Poetry’. I prefer to call this type of writing, ‘Therapeutic Writing’ or ‘Venting’. I don’t ‘hate’ anyone when I write something that expresses anger or disgust about an issue or a type of behaviour, I never hate the person themselves, I don’t even really ‘hate’ the behaviour or ‘incident’ that is being described, I’m simply responding to it with an emotion of some description at the time. Generally within an hour of completing a piece of writing, I’m feeling a sense of release and am fine again. The word ‘Hate’ is such a strong word, and people are apt to use it far too lightly and flippantly, similar to the way that the strength and power, of the emotion called ‘Love’, can be weakened and diluted, when it the word itself is either spoken or written too frequently and carelessly. The words ‘Love’ and ‘Hate’ in themselves are strange words, for they infer feelings that are extremely slanted towards either protecting or destroying someone or something. We protect those we are supposed to love, and we destroy those we are supposed to hate. Truth be known, I don’t think I’m capable of feeling such extremes of either emotion, I think I spend way too much of my life hovering around the perimeter of things, looking in, imitating the ways in which I’m supposed to think and feel about everything that’s going on… Mmm… This description has turned into quite some muse, considering all that really triggered it, was a comment I made to another person whereby I said, “You know, if I didn’t pick up a pen and write about it, it’s possible I’d pick up a gun and shoot someone.” But in having said that, I don’t feel this way because I hate anyone, but more because I just want something to STOP or go away, so I write it out of my system. I’m writing more softer stuff lately, than I’ve ever written before in my Life… There was a time when all of my writing used to sound angry, depressing and dark, it seems to be changing form and style lately… I’m not sure why… As yet I’m still considering whether or not I ‘Love’ this shift in my style of writing, or whether, in fact, I actually ‘Hate’ it. I guess more than anything, I simply prefer to flow where ever the current mood carries me to, and despite the common viewpoint of many people, I don’t believe that all emotions are capable of being controlled or contained… Nor maybe whether they even should be.

I think deep down I have a bit of a thing for pirates. When it came time to do this shoot I seemed to have an awful lot of pirate accessories just lying around waiting to be used. It was good to get it out of my system. Only problem is now I can’t stop thinking of excuses to take more pirate photos. So if anyone in Melbourne feels like playing dress ups with me, drop me a line Art Direction & Photography: Jo O’Brien / Styling: Jo O’Brien and Helen McLean / Model: Helen Mclean / Lighting: James Price / Post Production: Jo O’Brien

The ruins of the Redcliff Radar Station. All the buildings are now crumbling and in ruin. The station has been abandoned since 1961. Radar operators in the AC&W Squadron tracked the movements of aircraft sighted and passed speed, height and direction information to a Direction Centre (DC) and fighter interceptor squadrons. Fighter aircraft could be airborne in minutes after an alarm was given, and they closed in on unidentified planes by means of direction provided by the radar operators. Another of the Red Cliff functions was furnishing navigational aid to friendly aircraft operating in the area. Their detection of May-Day calls contributed to quick search and rescue efforts. / More in this series / / / / / / / / / / / / /
