  • Seagull Calling – Central Lake, Michigan

  • A mid-sized heron-like the great blue-but with a white belly. /

  • When the heron finally perched itself on the dock railing, I was more than pleased! These mid-sized herons are not as common as the Great Blues. Captured in Pinellas County, Florida. /

  • One of my favorite birds, the Great Blue Heron, stands close to four feet high and is truly majestic.

  • The smallest of the eight species of pelicans , adult brown pelicans have a grayish-brown body with a darker underbelly and white head and neck. During breeding season the back part of the neck becomes deep chestnut and a yellow patch appears at the base of the front of the neck. Eyes are very light blue with pink eyerings. A long-lived bird, the oldes known banded Brown Pelican was 43 years old. Photographed in Citrus County, Florida.

  • This young lady was being chased by her suitors, and landed on top of my Narrow Boat for a respite and a preen. She was so tame and walked right up to me allowing me to photograph her….....

  • These female Hooded Mergansers were photographed on the Rideau river. Hooded Mergansers’ vocalization is sometimes froglike croaking. Photo taken with a Canon EOS 20D, a 300mm f2.8 lens and a 1.4t.c. Slightly cropped and sharpened in PSP.

  • The Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) is the smallest of the pelicans. The bird on the left is between one and two years old. He has reached his full size but has not achieved the coloring of an adult. The bird on the right is a breeding adult. Besides the difference in the feather colors, notice the eyes.

  • Ok, the American White Pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) didn’t really have the flowers in his bill, but I thought he had a “love struck” look about him, and the flowers might help his cause.

  • The Goldeneye is a stocky and rather large-headed waterfowl seen in winter in the Ottawa Region, with this photo taken in the Rideau River. The adults form pairs in winter far in advance of breeding season (Oct-Jun), and often far from breeding grounds.   • It is interesting to note that when these waterfowl “bop” they always have their hoods up. This photo was taken along the Rideau River in Ottawa’s east end. The female Hooded Merganser (Lophodytes cucullatus) is one of our smallest mergansers with a long-body, a long-tail and a unique “hammerhead” crest. This photo was taken with a Canon EOS 20D, a 300mm f2.8 lens and a 1.4t.c. hand held.

  • Common Mergansers are a large diving duck with a long thin oranged bill. They are generally found along large lakes and rivers across the northern hemisphere. The long bill has toothy projections along its edges that help the duck hold onto its slippery fish prey.
