Close to Crackpot village in Swaledale Yorkshire, this is the lower of two waterfalls.. the fallen leaves give a welcome touch of colour to this late November shot. / Yorkshire Dales National Park. The shot was taken using the camera’s Tv mode, ISO 100, while balancing on a rock with the tripod in the water.. no ND filters were needed as it was taken on a dull day. / Canon 350D.. HDR. MY WATERFALLS SET
Not quite what it seems.. I sat by the waterfall for an hour trying to get good shots of the salmon leaping the falls, yet failed to catch a shot with multiple salmon. I achieved this image by using three shots and a bit of photo editing magic. Taken at Stainforth Force, Ribblesdale, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. MY WATERFALLS SET
Nelly Ayre Foss, Goathland, the North York Moors. Best wishes for Christmas and the New Year… thanks for looking :-) MY WATERFALLS SET
Haverdale beck flowing away from Crackpot Falls, which you can just see in the background.. the beck flows into the river Swale. MY WATERFALLS SET
Another photo of Cauldron Falls, this is at West Burton in the Yorkshire Dales. MY WATERFALLS SET
This was one of the first waterfall photo’s that I used HDR on. It was a really black and miserable day, looking at the photo’s before converting to hdr they lacked detail or any sense of the mood of the day. Once converted the mood really showed as did the power of the surge of water down the falls… this was the time I decided there was a place for hdr, done subtly it can be realistic, done over the top it becomes a work of art. MY WATERFALLS SET
One of the few shots at the bottom of the falls that were not spoiled by water spray… I even struck lucky with the sky, most of the shots had dark skies as a backdrop, this shot had blue :-) / I had to crop the left hand side as the bare branches were messy and distracting, I won’t mention another photographer walking into that part of the shot also.. lol. MY WATERFALLS SET
How many different ways can you capture a waterfall. I decided on a faster shutter speed than my normal waterblur shots. I bracketed my shot and merged in hdr.. for me a very pleasing end product considering it was taken almost straight into the sun ( with a touch of cover from the trees). :-) MY WATERFALLS SET
The walk up the Uldale valley was really good, there were waterfalls everywhere… all the water after the heavy rains were cascading down the valley sides into the river. The river had many big drops along the length of our walk, some too hard to get down to photograph. I think it took us about six hours to cover our there and back walk and most of our time was spent at Uldale Force. / This photo gives an idea of the state of the river, with Uldale force as a backdrop through the trees. MY WATERFALLS SET
You may have seen Robert Hardy’s great shot of me with the umbrella.. this is the shot I was taking. This close up to the falls the umbrella wasn’t much use, it may have stopped the rain getting to the lens, but it doesn’t stop the waterfall’s spray. I took closer shots, the spray on the lens was too much… I wish I could find a way of avoiding the spray.. / It’s strange how you can still get out there and discover sights like this in such a highly populated country. During our hike going up the river Rawthey as it races off Baugh Fell, we never saw a single soul… MY WATERFALLS SET
I took this shot a few weeks ago while on a photo shoot with Rob Hardy.. I knew he had posted a similar b/w shot so I held off posting this for a while.. / / I’ve decided to add it to the Yorkshire Grit group.. I believe it’s in Yorkshire, it’s definitely in The Yorkshire Dales National Park. Taken with a Canon 350D.. a hdr from 3 raw files. MY WATERFALLS SET
I like this old mill, hidden away on the North York Moors… to the owners credit, a new water wheel is in place, keeping the mills old fashioned look. So many of these old mills lose the water wheel when the mills are converted into homes… and yes the wheel works. I’m kicking myself for not going further upstream, but access down here is really difficult and poor Rob was waiting at the top ( a wobbly hip isn’t good for clambering of this sorts ). It was only Stu’s stupidity ( LOL ) clambering down that got me to stupidly follow where I would have probably not gone. / I’m sure if Rob could of got down here he would have got a much better shot. WATERFALLS SET
This is an old shot taken last year, it’s never been posted anywhere before.I think I was so happy with my other shots of Cauldron Force, this one was passed over. / A beautiful waterfall in the village of West Burton in the Yorkshire Dales. WATERFALLS SET
Another shot of this delightful waterfall, it’s setting seems very tropical, it’s a pity the weather wasn’t :-) It was a very misty day, it seemed as if the clouds had enveloped the ground. The scene is lifted by the bright greens of the ferns and newly formed brackens. Maybe too much greenery in shot, not enough waterfall, but I like the atmosphere, you can almost see the mist in the trees. The shot is only partially HDR, it helped bring out the mist in the tree area. WATERFALLS SET
Ramsdale Mill near Whitby. I came across a book of photo’s by Frank Sutcliffe, a famous photographer, who took photo’s around Whitby in the the mid to late 1800’s. / By coincidence one the photo’s was of Ramsdale Mill, a place I photographed early this year… I’ve already posted a portrait style colour photo, but I thought I would try to process an image similar to his. Unfortunately the book is copyrighted, so I can’t post the original, which looks similar to this, except for a fallen tree in the foreground, and the building is cropped at the top. / I did try to find the photo on the web, but with no success. . Taken in the North York Moors National Park. WATERFALLS SET
It was only when I was checking my photo’s did I notice the shadowy figures in the background…. just some passerby or the guardians of Janet’s Foss, watching out for the fairies? ;-) Janet’s Foss is found on the walk between Malham and Gordale Scar in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. WATERFALLS SET
Something different… when I came to photograph this lovely waterfall, half the gorge was in shadow the other in bright dappled light as the sun shone through the trees. I decided to experiment, by swinging my ND grad on it’s side to balance out the light. It worked but for my Cokin filter holder, which cast it’s own shadow on the image… creating an almost tunnel vision, centred on the Falls. Scaleber Force is in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. WATERFALLS SET
A slightly different angle from my last shot of Scaleber Force and I used the square crop to pull everything more towards you… Places like this, deep shadowy gorges and bright sunlight don’t always mix well, but I think it worked here. Scaleber Force is near Settle in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. WATERFALLS SET
I’ve done so many different angles of this small but pretty waterfall, I’ve decided to give you the low down this time :-) Nelly Ayre Foss is not so well known, but is hidden away close to Goathland, which is the setting for Aidensfield in TV’s Heartbeat…. / / Goathland is in the North York Moors National Park. WATERFALLS SET
I’ve been adding a new 1 Terra-bite hard drive to my computer this afternoon, much needed photo storage… as cameras get more pixels, the bigger the files are. / This is Nelly Ayre Foss again, this time two photo’s were used, one exposed for the sky (just) and the other the foreground. I put the foreground on to the sky shot, and then using the history brush brought the good sky underneath to the surface. Nelly Ayre Foss is in the North York Moors National Park. WATERFALLS SET
Wasn’t sure what to do… I was working on a portrait photo of this little waterfall on West Beck when I realised that a square crop would show off the movement of water much better… so I decided to post both. I always think that the square crop shows off the detail much better on a computer, unfortunatelyr portrait shots on a computer aren’t blown up big enough to see the detail / The waterfall in the background is Nelly Ayre Foss.. Taken in the North York Moors National Park. WATERFALLS SET
Another of the many waterfalls around Cray.. I don’t know if any are named, on my O/S maps they are just marked as waterfalls. This is not the largest fall by a long way, but it’s a bit special when the evening sky turns to pink… I like the way the old tree bends over the waterfall, contrasting against the sky. Cray is in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. WATERFALLS SET
This lovely barn on the outskirts of the delightful hamlet of Cray enjoys a wonderful setting near the wanderings and tumblings of this beck. I think I should become an estate agent with descriptions like that. Cray is in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. WATERFALLS SET
I enjoy doing this, just pushing the hdr a little OTT.. the wide angle exaggerates the the small falls in the foreground.. Keld Hole is on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. Taken with a Canon 5D HDR form 3 bracketed raw shots. WATERFALLS SET
