I’ve been keeping a close eye on the featured and popular pages on Red Bubble, and wondering where all the painters, illustrators and graphic artists are?! There are some AMAZING artists working in these media on the site, but it just seems like they’re all being lost in the system. I have nothing against photography or the photographers, but it’d be nice to see a more even spread. So – do your bit! Upload your best painting, illustrative or graphic pieces Seek out painted and illustrated works Comment, fave and watch! The popular algorithm is a closely guarded Red Bubble secret, however I’m sure doing the above things can help boost painting and illustration on this site. I know we can all help bring attention to the amazing artists on this site who deserve to have a little light shone on them! I will go through my own watch list and select and feature artists who I think deserve to be a little more popular. I have sent in my request to have an Illustration group on RB, and Kathleen emailed me back a few days later and said that many people had requested the same thing and that they were nutting out a plan for launching such a group. I really can’t wait, I do think a group dedicated to illustrators might be the shot in the arm needed for illustrative artists. If you’re with me, let me know!! Spread the word! (I have submitted this to a few groups, please let me know if this is appropriate – because I think it is, and highly beneficial to us all!!)

On the way home from Wal-Mart, the place of blender triumph, I did some drawing and painting. Still not finished with the piece, but, here’s an album that shows some of the work in progress. “Work in progress”http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=82013&l=2831d&id=612813763 Hopefully that’ll work, anyway! Though, I shall probably have to change the name of the album. I mean, once I figure out what the name of the painting is, anyway. Otherwise, if I used the same album for all pieces, it would get nigh on confusing to us all! Especially me! For those too lazy to go and read the description, I shall post a couple of the photos here .. if it works! lol That’s the first wee drawing of the painting, done in charcoal on canvas That is while still in the van, but having started with the watercolor paints. No, i don’t usually paint in the van. Sometimes, though, you know, you just gotta do what you gotta do. I had the paints, they were watercolors, my clothes were black, and we were on our way home, so if there had been any major incidents or accidents it wouldn’t have been too big a deal. The main thing i learned from working on this painting, is that I am really, really bad with brushes. Well, the business end of them. I can kick butt with the handle, doing quasi-pointillism

Watercolour painting describes works created using pigments that are water-soluble. While traditional watercolour art is created using thin, transparent washes of pigment, some modern watercolour artists use other ‘aqua media’ such as acrylic, gouache and ink as part of their works. We have so many talented watercolour artists here on RedBubble. Below are just a few works that caught our eye but if you’ve got some time to spare, take a wander through the galleries in the Water Media, Just Watercolours and Floral Watercolours and Pastels groups. They’re home to some wonderful talent! / The following are just a few of the artists currently featured in the watercolour groups mentioned above. • Intro to Yupo Paper

Hi everyone!! Lots of people have asked “What is Yupo?” Here is some information from Dick Blick Art Materials. Hope it is helpful!! I) “Yupo is a compelling and unique alternative to traditional art papers. It’s a synthetic paper, machine-made in the USA of 100% polypropylene. It is waterproof, stain resistant, and extremely strong and durable. This extraordinary, non-absorbent surface resists tearing and buckling and remains perfectly flat, eliminating the need for soaking, stretching, or taping. Watercolor professionals have found Yupo to be receptive to a variety of aqueous techniques, but it is also ideal for offset printing, silkscreen, debossing, drawing, acrylic painting, and more. Because of the unique qualities of this paper, dirt and oils hinder its performance. We recommend removing spots and fingerprints with soap and water before use. PH neutral, flawlessly smooth and Recyclable. Available in bright white or translucent. Pigments applied to the ultra bright white sheet retain their true clarity and brilliance while the translucent sheet allows for special layered effects and tracing. Minimum Order — If our price on a paper is $6.99 or less, a minimum order of 10 sheets of paper is required. Your selection may be assorted to meet this requirement. If our price is $7.00 or more, papers may be ordered per sheet.” Pads are tape bound on the short side and available for sale, as well as the ability to purchase individual sheets. Link for purchase at Dick Blick 2) Creative Catalyst Dancing with Yupo DVD / / The versatility of synthetic paper gives watercolor artist Taylor Ikin the freedom that perfectly suits her approach to watercolor painting. In this highly instructional DVD, Ikin reveals her masterful techniques for achieving lively tones while working quickly and boldly on Yupo. During the 120-minute DVD workshop, Ikin shares an in-depth discussion of her favorite materials, answers frequently asked questions about Yupo, and explains how to paint, draw, revise, and erase on synthetic paper. She also reveals how she keeps her paintings lively by eliminating earth tones from her palette and concentrating on exciting hues. Her free-flowing style is to work big and fast while using large, bold strokes. Ikin encourages viewers to achieve a sense of their subject rather than trying to copy nature. She teaches how to work from a photo reference and use a mirror to reverse the initial painting for evaluation — and warns against the excessive tidiness that discourages natural shapes. Most important, Ikin encourages viewers to relax, feel happy, and enjoy the process. Her approach is high energy! DVD. 120 minutes. Note — We regret that we cannot give refunds on videotapes, CD-ROMs, or DVDs. All sales are final. In the event of a defective cartridge or disc, we will replace it with an identical one. Hope this answers some questions and gives you a resource to purchase it if you are interested. There may be some less expensive places to order it but this is a start if you are interested. FYI: I always use the bright white paper. Lynn Moore

  • Watercolor Tip or Technique I Learned While Experimenting!

I read in one of Maxine Masterfield’s books that the way she gets her water effects is to spray alcohol on wet watercolor paint. Many of you probably already know this. The surprise for me came, when I decided to experiment and spray the alcohol on the watercolor paper before I ever sprayed any paint on the watercolor paper. Some of you know I sometimes use liquid watercolor that involves spraying the paint instead of using a brush. So the alcohol was the first layer, and while the alcohol was still wet I sprayed paint on top. I let this layer of paint dry and went on to spray more paint. Amazingly the first layer of watercolor stayed fast and did not mix with the next layer. I thought when I sprayed the second layer of wet watercolor paint, the layer beneath it would get wet again also and the two layers would mix together. Probably would have made mud, but who cares because I was experimenting. Layer 1 – sprayed alcohol / Layer 2 – sprayed liquid watercolor (let dry) / Layer 3 – more sprayed liquid watercolor or any other medium I suppose The result of this experimentation is the piece that I have on RB called / The Harvest Experimenting is so fun isn’t it? Thanks for checking this out! FYI: Maxine Masterfield found that the best spray bottle for the alcohol is the Chloraseptic sore throat spray bottle. She had tried many others she said. I thought, “Well, she ought to know so I went out, bought a bottle, poured it down the drain, rinsed it well and filled it with alcohol and that is what I use. To experiment with spraying liquid watercolor, you put a bit of tube watercolor paint in a spray bottle, add distilled water, this is evidently important, shake well and spray! Just experiment by adding more or less paint until you get the color you like. It also really helps to add half a cap of Wagner brand Paint Easy. This thins paint without diluting it and helps the liquid paint from clogging up. It is available at Wal-Mart. The best bottles I have found for spraying paint (and believe me I have tried every spray bottle I could get my hands on) are from Hobby Lobby. The little short ones they sell at Dick Blick always get clogged and it is very frustrating to have to keep switching paint from bottle to bottle. This is a great way to find out if you like the spraying technique before investing in more expensive watercolor paints that actually come in liquid form. Have fun experimenting!

  • Watercolor Tip and Technique # 2 - How to mix your own liquid watercolor paint

Sorry folks. I should have put this information in the last one but didn’t think of it. This is how you can make your own liquid watercolor paint and another tip from Maxine Masterfield. Bottle for rubbing alcohol / Maxine Masterfield found that the best spray bottle for alcohol is the Chloraseptic sore throat spray bottle. She had tried many others she said. I thought, “Well, she ought to know so I went out, bought a bottle, poured the chloraseptic down the drain, rinsed it well and filled it with rubbing alcohol and that is the spray bottle I use. Bottle for liquid watercolor and how to mix the paint / To experiment with spraying liquid watercolor, you put a bit of tube watercolor paint in a spray bottle, add distilled water, this is evidently important, shake well and spray! Just experiment by adding more or less paint until you get the color you like. It also really helps to add half a cap of Wagner brand Paint Easy. This thins paint without diluting it and helps the liquid paint from clogging up. If you find the paint is still clogging up, add more Paint Easy. It is available at Wal-Mart. The best bottles I have found for spraying paint (and believe me I have tried every spray bottle I could get my hands on) are from Hobby Lobby. They are tall and see through so you can view the color inside. The little short ones they sell at Dick Blick (holbein brand) always get clogged and it is very frustrating to have to keep switching paint from bottle to bottle. This is a great way to find out if you like the spraying technique before investing in more expensive watercolor paints that actually come premixed already in liquid form. This is a piece done with my mixing my own tube paint with water: This is a piece done with professionally premixed liquid watercolor paint: / (Robert Doak paint) I think the difference is night and day. Both are beautiful, my own mixed paint is more soft pastel and the professional is obviously much more vibrant and strong. It depends on what you like better or you might like your own paint for certain works, and the professional for others. It helps to try mixing your own before investing in the professional paints so you know you like the technique enough to invest more money.Whether you mix your own or use professional paint, you will probably need the Paint Easy to prevent clogging of the bottle. There you go. Experiment to your hearts content. It is a whole different way of painting, and very freeing and expressive, in my humble opinion. Enjoy! / Lynn

Well I didn’t think anything could get me more excited than being on the home page BUT…...I just had three sales of mounted prints in medium size of each of my Cherry Blossom Watercolor paintings. Funny, I was just thinking the other day how nice the three of them would look together as a feature on a wall…..and then….its happened. / A HUGE THANKYOU to the wonderful person who purchased my work…..I really appreciate it…I’m on a roll….so many good things happening to me these last few months. I’ve been totally inspired by an audio CD “The Power of your Emotions” by Esther and Jerry Hicks.

watercolors – information provided by wikipedia:

Watercolor (US) or Watercolour (UK) (and "aquarelle" in French) is a painting method. A watercolor is the medium or the resulting artwork, in which the paints are made of pigments suspended in a water soluble vehicle. The traditional and most common support for watercolor paintings is paper; other supports include papyrus, bark papers, plastics, vellum or leather, fabric, wood, and canvas. In East Asia, watercolor painting with inks is referred to as brush painting or scroll painting. In Chinese and Japanese painting it has been the dominant medium, often in monochrome black or browns. India, Ethiopia and other countries also have long traditions. Fingerpainting with watercolor paints originated in China.
