One of the biggest challenges I’ve found in watercolor is the capture of reflectivity. Many insects, due to scales or hairs, have iridescent and opalescent appearance. I’ve experimented with metallic additives to achieve effects, but the technology just isn’t there yet. This piece, however, represents just one of the shades of blue in the Morpho from South America. The cicada, also known as a locust or 17-year locust, is more often heard but not seen. Cicadas are responsible for the buzzing racket on warm summer evenings. / Insects are great subjects for studies in reflectivity. I had a lot of fun with the metallic properties of the cicada’s skin. / Please view my other tees here

Original painting in watercolor. The most popular species of Tarantula kept as pets, and one can see why: inquisitive, personable, powerful yet delicate. An excellent ambassador species to help us all rid ourselves of the fear of all things multi-limbed and exoskeletal. This piece was done as a pet portrait. / Please view my other tees here
The “Monarch” is most often seen in North America and the Canaries. In recent times it has also been present in New Zealand and Australia where it is known as the “Wanderer.” In Latin it is called “Danaus Plexippus.” Original Watercolor Painting on A3 300g/m² art paper.
