A depiction of the fated Persephone of Greek myth who was captured by Hades in order to be his wife and queen in the eternal underground. She was allowed to return to the old world every spring, representing the virtual ‘death’ of nature we experience every winter countered by its eventual rebirth every year in the spring. / Original completed in watercolor and gouache on Arches 180lb. cold-pressed cotton rag.

I painted this watercolor portrait years ago when going through a “blue” period. I used only black with layers of wash on cold press watercolor paper. The original is about 11×14”. I listened to Joni Mitchell a lot then and “Blue” fits. / Joni Mitchell-Blue

They bring us such a huge array of colors each spring, from white to pink to blue to magenta and purple – and love to climb trellises, trees, and buildings, wherever their little “curls” can get a good hold.. I just uploaded this new scan from my work!! I just completed this mixed media piece. The image size is 14×18 inches. I used archival ink and derwent graphitint watercolor pencils. This is drawn on illustration board and took many hours. I completed the border over a year ago and could not decide what I wanted to put in the middle. I was originally going to call this drawing “If I Could Help Design An Antelope” but as I finished it I decided that it had an old world feeling to it and the name “Paradise” seemed to fit. you will not see this species anywhere as I dreamed it up:) Any proceeds from the sale of prints and cards from RB will be donated to The Philadelphis Mission.
