views: 3424 / favs: 51 Completed 2004 age 18 I was inspired by the Japanese artist Hiroshi Senju, who tends to limit his colors in his paintings. Sometimes he paints an image where the background is the complimentary colors of the subject. His style is simple but at the same time intense, where the foreground stands out from the complimentary background. Medium: Watercolors This is a painting done in my sketchbook. The paper isn’t watercolor paper, but at least more durable than regular printing paper. I got sick of beakfaces and lizards momentarily and decided to paint some fishies – literally, goldfish…I’ve applied patches of gold leaf to their little heads. Despite being distracted by Eurovision I managed to finish it this weekend!! This one will probably be at Brunswick St Gallery in their small works show, June 6th. About 20×20cm, watercolour, chalk pastel etc on canvas. These enlargements are bigger than life size:

I liked the very hard pen ink lines of the foreground, contrasting with the soft, misty, wet-in-wet background. 90 lb watercolour, medium rough paper. / 12”x8”

This one is half sketch, half finished piece of work. It was done quite a while ago when I was experimenting with some chalk pastels, and watercolor pencils. It’s a little sloppy, the drawing of the little girl is a wee bit wanky, but I sort of dig the colors… So there’s something… I guess… Maybe… No?

Another in the Masters series. / This is the centre part of a long panoramic watercolour. By Thomas Bush Hardy, 1895. I’ve moved some of the boats to be closer together, as my version is a small painting, 10×7 inches, on rough Bockingford tinted cream paper, 140lb. I will be painting the full length seascape in the future.

Watercolor and pencil on illustration board, / 15×20 / 2009 Related work: / The Waterman: Unio Mystica This is the second panel of The Waterman triptych. While the central panel represents the Christ as the macrocosm, the side panels are the microcosm, represented by the Four Elements and their manifestation in the physical world. Ignis Aeris is the yang pillar, the elements Fire and Air. Volatile and oriented upward, these elements are connected to the realms of the abstract thinking and intuition. Fire is the energy, passion and primeval instincts, that need to be balanced by the intellect (Air) in order to manifest in a most constructive way. The certainty of the Divine, that comes from the heart and from a primal knowledge, needs to be shaped by the intellect in order to become less aggressive and to expand (the butterflies rising from the fire and flying upward). Only through a perfect combination of faith and reason we can access the Divine and understand Its Laws. At the basis of the picture, handling the creative power of Fire, we see the Magician of the Tarot, which I represented wearing the skin of Nemean Lion, just like Greek hero Herakles. He represents the first step in the Hero’s Journey, or that path that each one of us need to find out and go through in order to become Whole with the Universe. The Magician is the one who uses his power of will (Fire) and mental skills (Air) in order to find his own path.

The other casualties of war—those left behind, are seldom considered after the folded flag is given in memory of their loved one’s sacrifice. This piece pays homage to those left behind, and explores “Feeling the Void”. It features the riderless horse, which, although reserved for colonels, or above, in the Army or Marine Corps, here, symbolizes the soul of the lost soldier. The horse here is a Friesian horse, on which a star blaze has been added as a tribute to “Black Jack”, a long serving riderless horse. The young woman represents a daughter, nearly grown, for all intents and purposes, but always and forever “Daddy’s girl”. Take a moment with me and remember the wives, husbands, children, brothers, and sisters of the lost soldiers who paid their respective country with their life and, also, the lives of those they left behind.
