Medium – Pencil drawing on A1 size Kent cartridge paper. Art & Design theme Extension of the Senses of Man (Woman) / Always had a passion for direct observational drawing/painting from life/nature, especially to observe and study the human figure/form/anatomy. / The skin is our largest sensory organ and requires the extension of clothing for its protection against the environmental elements. Thinly draped clothing veiled over the human form provides ample study of soft falling movements along body lines, flowing shapes & patterns etc. I wanted to explore the human form/skin/clothing outdoors in the natural environment as apposed to life models posing in a protective drawing room set-up that I had been so far exposed to. / / Process: / Stage 1) Exploring the extension of the senses by exposing the human form/skin/clothing to the natural physical elements of water, air and earth/sand at a public beach landscape and documenting this through the photographic medium. Two fellow art students modelled for me in loose light negligee clothing. Stage 2) From there I developed a B&W photographic series learning several darkroom manipulation techniques in the process. Stage 3) From the resultant photographic imagery (on the human structure, female shapes and forms, skin & cloth exposured to the natural elements of water, wind/air, earth/sand/rock in the landscape) I further explore and study the inherent structure and ‘dynamics’ of several images and produce several drawings. / / I think my two fellow art student models totally enjoyed the creative photographic documentation experience, even though they got cold, wet and buried in sand, and I, the photographer stayed dry!

I liked the very hard pen ink lines of the foreground, contrasting with the soft, misty, wet-in-wet background. 90 lb watercolour, medium rough paper. / 12”x8”
I based this watercolour painting upon an engraving, from the Georgian period of the old harbour at Whitby. Size 18”x12”. On 140lb, paper .

I was recently asked how I make my watermark on my images so I thought this may come in handy for others too. Remember though, that this is just my method. there may be other ways out there too. In a steps process of making a custom watermarking brush and then watermarking an image with it. (this is all done in photoshop) / Say you have your image, all ready… 1. Make a new layer on top of the image you want to add the watermark to, 2. Open a new page to make a brush on, 3. Get the text box and choose a nice neat font, 4. Type ’ © ’ (hot keys = press and hold down the ALT key while typing in 0169) / and your first and last name or business name, / then 5. Flatten that layer, customize that with a logo, an underscore above it for titles to sit on, etc, 6. Flatten all that when you’re done customizing it all, 7. Select the space it occupies tightly, / then go 8. Edit>Define Brush and save it as a brush in your photoshop. / then 9. Go to the image, get the paintbrush tool on 100% opacity, and on the new layer that on your image, put the copyright in the corner or wherever you want it, Option: Maybe add the title of the image with the text tool, / now flatten the title into the copyright by going Layer>merge down / and then 10. Right click on the copyright layer, go Blending options and make the layer less intrusive on the image, 11. Flatten all the layers, save it. / (i save the copyright version of each image separate so i can sell prints without the copyright on it at all if requested)

Part of the “Out of Place” series exploring the culture / nature divide – our alienation from nature. I find it perplexing just how easily we humans get mesmerised by work that is often intrinsically meaningless and the virtual world which seems mainly mired in trivia. It’s all the more strange when you consider that the bulk of humanity has only lived in cities for less than 100 years. Prior to that, for countless millennia the natural world was all we knew. / I spend hours in the Park and it’s interesting watching the way other people relate to it. For example, this set of falls is literally 1 minute off the main road through the Park. There are 3 sets of fall each more majestic than the one before. And yet the average amount of time that people spend here I’ve noticed is less than than 10 minutes. 10 minutes!! And then off home to get ready for work or to sit down and watch 4 hours of T.V. / I / just / don’t / get / it. / Still – one advantage – fewer people to bugger up my shots. / Anyway this is part of a series attempting to portray this collective psychosis of our species. Yes she is actually sitting there on top of a 30m waterfall – not photoshopped- very brave I thought, though we did take the wheels off the chair so she didn’t go sailing over.
